I did just that, did a clean 180, and rolled through the timing lights BACKWARDS.

I seem to remember a type of spray on bra option that was intended to be temporary, for use during track events (or the like) and then it would be removed for civilian use.

They are using a material from 3M called Venture - with a lifetime warranty.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK, it's not really my first bra, I had one on Kermit, my 73 Targa. But I remember how my Lexus was pockmarked from the salt/sand mixture that they use in Chicago. Since my 996 looks really good, and there are only a few chips on the front, I decided to get a clear bra put on.
The plan is to cover the front bumper, front half of the hood, front fenders, mirrors, and the bottom of the rear bumper where the rear tires will spit gravel and sand at it. The pricetag is cheaper than I remembered, or maybe it's the slow season - $575. They are using a material from 3M called Venture - with a lifetime warranty.
They even have a product they use to cover a windshield - which I'll pass on. But they also have a material they use to cover the headlights. What do you guys think of that? Is it worth paying a bit more to cover the headlights? I don't know if that will keep them from yellowing, or just protects them from abrasions.

I've got the Venture shield on the 2001 I just picked up, and it works wonderfully. Not a single chip on the front end of the car. I didn't pay for it, but the records that came with the car show a price of $899 and a $220 discount for a sale price of $679.
You can't see it (which is the point right) but it is on there....
Larry, are you getting a "training bra" or have you developed enough to get a big girl bra?
Seriously, I like your plan, except I would do the entire hood, not just half. For an additional $100 (maybe?) you get full protection and one less "line" demarking where the bra ends.
As I remember, I was pretty adept at the one handed release, but that was quite a few years ago. After being married for 40+ years, I'm more than a bit out of practice.
Their website gallery showed Lambo's, BMW 7series, Bentleys, Aston Martins, etc. I was confident that they knew what they were doing. They told me that it isn't unusual for an owner of one of these cars to ask for a complete wrap. They charge $2,000 for a full wrap. Can't imagine. A Plasticized Car!!! He said that he thought that he had done 1,000 Porsches. He said that they did a Carerra GT with a full wrap. It had less than 5,000 miles on it.
I am in a bit of a cash crunch right now, so the $575 price looked really good. Tim, you're right. They said that they would charge $100 more to do the entire hood. That was pushing me over my budget (there was a budget??) If I had known that they were only going to charge me $500 for the whole job, I would have had them do it. We'll see if the cash situation in the spring is better. Maybe then . . . . . . .
I shot a few pictures of my car when I got it home. It's snowy in Chicago, and I wanted to get the bra on before I hit too much snow/salt/sand this winter.

Damn, after reading the title of this thread I though the price of these cars have dropped to the point that 16 year old girls were now purchasing them. LOL
I am having a really hard time thinking how I can inject some comment about getting out to the track, but HEY - I know.....
now with the front protected you can go out to the track and not worry about chips
Pete, I can't imagine what ever on earth you could be thinking
anybody looked at the spray-on bra option? It's basically a heavy clearcoat (high quality) sprayed on as a normal clear would be. Any dings after application are simply lightly sanded and re-sprayed. A guy here in Denver claims all the quality of a factory clear coat and very easy and inexpensive chip and ding repair. It is about $800 for the front end of my 996. It is completely undetectable visually and is guaranteed not to yellow or cloud. Seems like a reasonable option...
LOL - that never happens to me
mid year I came home from a day at Bremerton and thought someone had hit me... then I thought hard and said.... OH, I guess I did hit that one... yup

hahahaha, made me smile and chuckle - I have been out there and watched a LOT of people hit a LOT of cones - some people hit one side of the car, some both, some straddle them....:roflamo: it's funny, till you think of the polishing involved
On my first AX, a well meaning experienced driver ran the course with me the first time. Afterwards he told me that as I got into the last turn, I should hit the brakes real hard. I did just that, did a clean 180, and rolled through the timing lights BACKWARDS. It was my fastest time of the day!!! Unfortunately, no one caught it on video. (but this is getting a bit far afield) But I like this pic catching some air. MJ, you've got nothing on Kermit!!!!

Here are some pix of my 996 - after the bra installation. I tried to catch the light to show the edge of the bra on the fender, but it's hard enough to see with your naked eye. The camera just doesn't show that level of resolution and clarity.

BKJ,
Nope, not Kermit. That's a Sporto S, mine was a 5 speed E. His Metallic Green, mine Viper Green. But it looks like a pretty car. I have to say, as much as I miss driving Kermit - - driving my 996 on a daily basis has eased my "pain" dramatically
.
There's a whole different world between driving a garage queen to the latest Concours every month during the summer, and taking the 996 to the grocery store, to work, to pick up the Gkids, etc, etc on a several times a day basis.
I liked Kermit - but this is a whole new experience, a great one!!!!

ahh, I can see a slight color difference now.
I can understand the enjoyment with the differences in driving sometimes and worrying.. and driving everywhere and having fun. Cheers! :-)
Hey Sneaky Pete, I think you should PM me that pic and I'll let you know if it is or isn't Rennlist safe. If it's Rennlist safe then you can post it, if not, then you can send me any other pics like it and I'll make sure that they don't get posted on here...
I have been installing ppf (paint protection film) for over 10 years now and absolutely stand by it. Not just as an installer but as a car enthusiast myself. If the install is done correctly (99% perfect or better) then the outcome is by far worth the money. I have seen it all in this line of work so I can absolutely agree when you see a bad install with a clear bra you dont want to invest your own money to make your car look like crap. Its meant to protect the beauty of the car, not make it look bad. Doing the entire hood and fenders is very popular especially on the track cars. I have done thousands of installs from 5 minute jobs to 5 day jobs. Some people have an issue with the line across the hood but this is always better then a hundred rock chips on your front end. This is where the full hood and fenders come in to play. I have several pictures with full hoods and quarter hoods. I have hundreds if anyone has questions. This is a very large investment (next to your house) and should be protected. The resale value pays for itself years after the install.
Thanks for your input. I can't imagine that I would ever want to cover my entire car with film, but what's your feeling on a full hood versus front 1/3 of the hood. I didn't have them do the whole hood when I was in the shop yesterday, but now I'm thinking that maybe I should have. In the cars that I've had, it seemed that most of rock chips were on the front bumper, or at the very front of the hood. But I also had a couple of good chips out of the top 1/3 of the front pillar to the side of the windshield. Seeing chips like that make you want to plasticize the entire car.
What's your view of the 1/3 hood vs the full hood treatment?

Someone help me. Because I am not getting this bra thing.
My thoughts.. you can get the bumpers painted for about 700, the pair is you take them off the car and to the body shop.
This bra.. can get nicked? No? and when it does, you have to have a bodyshop replace it anyway? No? plus the cost of installation. And if it does it a scar, it too will fill with polish, wax and show up just like a nic in the paint and you cant put any touch up on it? no?
Some one help me.. Cause Im not feeling the love for the bras
Dont flame me,, Educate me please
Shark:
Here's the deal. The clear bra is a sheet of plastic (not sure how thick) that has adhesive on one side. It is glued to the painted surface of the car, and stays there till you want to take it off. It doesn't harm the paint. It is resilient. If a stone hits the bra, it bounces off, just like it would bounce off the paint, but instead of chipping the paint, it acts as a cushion, and the stone bounces off the plastic without damaging the paint. It has a lifetime guarantee. If it ever DOES get damaged, they will replace it. No cost.
I have seen many bumpers and hoods that have road rash from the stones that have hit it along those many miles. It would take a pretty big stone to dent the hood or fender through the bra. Then it just dents the metal - the paint is unharmed.
It is clear plastic, so it's impossible to see unless you are really close up to the car, and are looking for the edge of the sheet. You can wax it just like you wax the car, but it won't scratch the way the painted finish of the car will.
And yes, you might be able to get a bumper or two painted for $700. I spent $500 to get the bumper, front fenders and a part of the hood covered and protected. No more stone chips for me!! It's a better deal than having to get the car painted or resprayed again and again. I only had to do this once. It has a lifetime guarantee.
Dream - thanks for the compliment. I finally have a car suited to the plate. I've had the plate for close to 10 years. It's been attached to a Lexus before now.
