I replaced the CDR-220 in my 2000 996 last year with a new head unit, for precisely that reason.

Suggestion

I didn't want to spend the money upgrading the speakers and all, but on a pre-MOST car like yours it's easy to replace just the head unit.

Suggestion

As rwiii pointed out, to get a major sound improvement you should also replace the speakers, but I suspect you're like me and just looking for the convenience of an iPod/iPhone connector.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a '99 996 with the original CDR-210 head unit, 6 disk cd changer and M480 amp. I am considering switching out to a CDR-220 to get the AUX input for an iPod connection. Would this be a plug and play upgrade and would the 220 give any performance improvement? If not would a CR-23 switch make more sense, assuming it is even possible? I know the stock systems aren't great but I prefer the look of them in the dash over the more modern units. Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

I upgraded to the CDR-220 because of AUX, it's a plug-and-play. No big improvement in terms of sound but having my Zune in the car is a big plus.

POST 3Original post

Seriously? The stock unit, amp and speakers suck. If you're going to go through the trouble of popping components out then pop them all out and get some decent sounds. Of course, brace for the impact of those that want you to listen to the motor. If you are not a philistine then swap out everything. Otherwise, join the chumps that say press the accelerator and listen to the engine. And forget about a drink holder.

I didn't want to spend the money upgrading the speakers and all, but on a pre-MOST car like yours it's easy to replace just the head unit. I went for an Alpine X305, which has a nice iPod interface, but almost any modern head unit will work fine. As rwiii pointed out, to get a major sound improvement you should also replace the speakers, but I suspect you're like me and just looking for the convenience of an iPod/iPhone connector. Bob PS: and for cupholders in a 996, nothing beats "Ultimate Cupholder"

Hey now......I take offense to that. I very seldom have the a radio on when driving. I really love the sound of the car.

POST 6Original post

Sorry, I would say I didn't mean to offend but I know I'm rough around the edges. I am always in need of tunes and a sip of adult beverage from my home made drink holder regardless of how un-PC I am.

POST 7Original post

Unless you can get a 220 for a song, why not just buy a tastefully done new unit, with built-in iPod inputs? Stereo head units have come a long way sound-wise in 12 years!
