Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I need some help in planning for a driving trip to the N/ California wine country (Napa valley). Here is my rough plan: Plan to stay in San Francisco for one night and drive up to Napa next morning, and drive back on the same day stay at SF another night and head home the next day. (1). Would you guys recommend doing that? Or stay in Napa overnight instead on the next day? (2). Where should I stay if I want to stay near fisherman's Wharf area. $150-$200 night budget. (3). In Napa valley is there a tour that I can sign up that will hit all the winery? or is there specific winery that I should visit? TIA

1) Depends if you want to stay in SF. Napa Valley is only an hour anyways. 2) Lots of options. Find a hotel close to pier 39. 3) There is a napa valley wine train that hits a lot of wineries. You can use this map and site to help plan the trip. http://www.napavalley.com/maps/

1) It's going to take you roughly 1 1/2 hours to get to a Napa winery (excluding those in Carneros) from SF. If you're going to do a lot of tasting, I'd spend the night up there. Plus, there are lots of great places to eat there and then spend the night at a B&B for a memorable experience. 2)IMO, Fisherman's Wharf is the cheesiest part of SF. Why not stay in the nicest part of town for the same price? For example, this is a only block from where the billionaires live: http://www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/sanfrancisco/drisco 3)You can plan it yourself (pay attention to time & geography) or go with some tour company. Many places you can just drop in to taste, but tours/visits need to be arranged well in advance. This may help: http://www.napavintners.com/ Good tours: Schramsberg or Domaine Chandon (sparkling), Sterling (self-guided, great scenery), Far Niente/Nickel & Nickel (Gil Nickel had a great car collection), Quintessa, Spring Mtn Vineyard, etc Also, stop in at Phelps, Silverado & Darioush (all on Silverado Trail) for good scenery & good wine. I'd avoid the Wine Train. The only things I've heard about it weren't very good.

+ 1 on avoid the train. It's hated by locals and more than a bit Disney.

def stay overnight in Napa. We booked our trip late in the season and everything was booked but the Embassy Suites and it turned out to be very nice, and a total bargain. They threw in free breakfast in the morning and a free cocktail hour in the evening. I would not stay in Fisherman's Wharf either, stay near the square or somewhere else. It stinks down there and you can only walk to Ghirardelli. As for the wine tours, we did an 8 hour limo tour. It was a blast. Seems like a long time, but we visited wineries on both sides of the mountain, and the limo driver knew several lillte stops that we would never have made on our own. My favorites properties were Jordan (a beautiful Tuscan style chalet, but a LONG drive), Kundee (they have a great cave in the side of a mountain) and Ledson (built as a personal estate and turned into the winery.) That guy was making eyes at my wife, but a nice place to visit nonetheless.

POST 6Original post

Aren't there some good places to stay at or around Union Square? I wouldn't want to stay at the tourist Fisherman's Wharf area.

Those are in Sonoma. I wouldn't try to hit both Sonoma & Napa in one day, too far apart. I've never done the limo tour, but that could also be a good way to go if there aren't certain places you want to visit. Also, some of my favorite visits have been at places that say they aren't open to the public. A lot of times, they'll let you in if you call and schmooze them a few days or weeks ahead of time. Finally...one of my absolute favorites in Napa is Prager. They do port and do it well (the other Napa ports I've had were all complete crap). They do some experimental port varietals that are fun to try also. But the reason to go is because they're so noncorporate and old school. It's hard to find (look for the small sign on 29 across from Louis Martini) and located in a really dusty little barn. The dad used to do the tastings, now I think it's just the son. Go there after lunch at Taylor's Refresher, which is just up the street. You'll thank me later...

Thank you guys for all of the input, after reading all these informations about wines I can't help but to run to my wine cooler to open a bottle.
