Time is the great depreciator, and all those second buyers are the lucky beneficiaries of owners who were reluctant to use the cars for the purposes for which they were designed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I'm just curious what the general belief is, how many miles a year would put you in the "Garage Queen" catagory?
I put about 9K miles on my car in the first year and then just less than 6K miles a year after that. I don't qualify do I?
no...
garage queens are never driven.
you see things that has 10k milea after 15 years.
but you ought to put more miles on your since you are in sunny CA :-)
My 996TT never left the garage/lift last year (was having too much fun with the Cup car). Car has never been in the rain. Currently has 4K on the clock. It has been up to 117mph.
I just happen to have an attachment to the car I guess (and after passing on a Carrera GT based on my Cayenne experience); I plan on keeping it for a while.
I would say a GQ would be a car under the 2500 miles/year EPA exemption.
Well, I know I don't qualify if the 50mph limit is any sign.
Hi mooty,
I'd love to put more miles on my car but I have kids and I've been fortunate enough to be able to keep my car despit that. I know many of you valiantly install car seats, boosters and the rest in your 911 but I just can't bring myself to do that. No one spits up in my car, there are no diaper wipes in my car, my car has never heard the "Thomas the Tank Engine" song, no one has ever peed their pants in my car, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids but there's a place for everything and until my kids are 6+, that place is not my 911. I won't tell you how valuable a 2 hour ride in my 911 "to get milk, yeah..." was after travelling 12 hours round trip to the East coast for last Thanksgiving...
Cheers
gq?
1) anything not driven mon-fri
2) ...or in incliment weather
3) pampered w/ all manner of auto beauty care products
4) never tracked
5) never driven to 6/10ths--nevermind 10/10ths--of it's capabilities.
6) devoid of stone chips
7) engine still smells of burnt cosmoline
8) 5-yrs-old w/ orginal brakes.
9) wears a bra (of any kind)
10) won't public park for fear of door dings
Mine is driven 1/2 of the week, depending on the mood....
Pampered before it goes to bed each day it's driven (1 hour at least)
Never tracked
Driven like it should be away back from others who pitch rocks (all-cars)
No chips on mine (yet--- knock knock)
engine smells.... ? Little wierd, will it go away soon?
not original brakes.....
sorry no bra, I let it all hang out......
Public park only if I can see it or I can get premo parking and if not I'm taking two stalls in section Z & row 100..... spots 99-100..
Oh, just wanted to add that it's garaged at home and garaged at work in private parking stalls...

i define garage queen by mileage and 'rules' the driver has for when and how to drive it.
mostly by mileage though and not for obvious reasons, but specifically because the driver is 'afraid' too put too many miles for it either because of depreciation, paranoia, or whatever.

7) engine still smells of burnt cosmoline NO.
8) 5-yrs-old w/ orginal brakes. 17 YEARS OLD WITH ORIGINAL BRAKE PADS!
9) wears a bra (of any kind) NO. THEY DAMAGE THE PAINT!
10) won't public park for fear of door dings CHECK.
Got most of them, I guess it's a garage queen!
OK i put 25 k on the first 11 months, I think if one doesnt do that much driving it is a garage queen!!!
or i need help cuz i cant get my *** out of the seat.....
My 86' cab is pretty much a queen. 35K miles. Am I nuts? Yes. Will it go up in value? No. At least not for a number of years. Are low mile carreras getting rare? Yes, and that's why I enjoy having this one. On the other hand I am tired of not having a Porsche as a daily driver so I am building a new garage for the old, and looking for an 04' cab to be my every day car. I plan on leasing and using every mile of my allowance!
How about washing and redetailing after every drive?
And the bit about not driving the car the way its made...its called PAINTERS TAPE!
HAHAHA, i bought sooo much painters tape on ebay for virtually nothing! I autocross with pride now! That morning the lower 1/3 of my car is covered up! After getting home the car looks concours ready! (just apply gently, and and peel gently!)
LOL when nanotech paint comes into the mainstream, it will completely destroy the carwash/car detailing/etc industry. it will simultaneously sustain exponetial growth itself AND kill quite a few industries.
It seems that Porsche drivers fall into two categories: those like me who drive the hell out of their cars, and those who treat their cars like a piece of artwork. There's no doubt that I could reduce depreciation on my Porsches by not driving them so much, I average about 10K miles a year, but I just enjoy driving them too much to let them languish in my garage. Unless it's snowing, I'm driving my Porsche. Also, on more than one occassion I overheard a service tech telling some Porsche owner that he wouldn't have half of the problems he was experiencing if he drove the car the way it was designed to be driven:hard.
A garage queen is defined by the owner's thought process. If you can drive it but you don't because you are keeping it pristine, it's a queen. Porsches are a tactile experience, and looking is one small part of the package. Personally, I couldn't care less about paint chips, road salt, snow, or any other road hazard. The engineers took it all into account in design, proved it in testing, and stand behind it with a warranty. Since you have paid for the warranty, isn't it kind of nuts not to use up the miles by the point you've used up the time?
If you look at Excellence, the collumn on purchases only adds 10% for low miles. Time is the great depreciator, and all those second buyers are the lucky beneficiaries of owners who were reluctant to use the cars for the purposes for which they were designed. I believe that if you can afford the car, accept the depreciation and enjoy it every mile you can.
Does the concept of a seasonal GQ makes any sens ? I still haven't got the impulse to get her out in winter, it's the salt that kills me. The rest of the season It's being driven 130 Km 5 days a week plus week-end. I occasionaly fuss and end up washing her too often...other I goes for 1 1/2 week with getting her clean...maybe I'm bi-polar who knows.
The kids (3 and 5 ) loves to ride in and just get a hoot out of the nav system when I change the voice to GERMAN FEMALE (I tell them that there is a German lady hidden in the car and that she'll tell us where to go. The drawback, smudge marks on this inside windows.
All I know is that once you're sitting inside and driving it who cares how tiddy it looks, it's how it feels driving it.
I think a GQ is define by somebody afraid to use the car for fear of both putting milleage and getting the car dirty.
You have to love the chap who lives in Switzeland (Eric ??) and has gazzilion of miles on his TT. God bless him.
leedav, you're right...what bugs me is that I grew up in Quebec where we had a lot more snow that in Ontario yet there was a lot less salt on the roads. More sand, less salt. I think ti's the fault of lawyers...everybody is afraid of a lawsuit if anyone slips, falls or fear ice...hey we live in the north, get use to it.
I live in Oregon now. Just get hammered by rock chips whenever we have a spell of ice or snow. Lived in Arizona for a while too. They do "Chip Sealing"... They just throw gravel on the road and let the cars drive it in. Lots of windshield replacements out there.
Here is a garage queen, 2001 TT with 2,078 miles! Why bother!

It almost too low!
Not my car, just pondering...
"Nanotech "self-repairing" paint lacquer contains ceramic nanoparticles which offer a three-fold increase in scratch resistance over conventional clear coats. This will help the paintwork retain its gloss for a longer period of time.
Nanotechnology is the creation of matter built from the atom up; tiny technology. There are a trillion and a half atoms in a golf ball. This year, automakers will be producing cars with nanotechnology paint.
It works like this: nanotech paint will be mixed in with regular paint. When the side of the car is scratched, the nanotech paint molecules explode and fill in the scratch. (Note: the paint does not explode enough to splash onto the person or object that scratched the car.)
Sherman Williams will be producing nanopaint for houses in two years. This new technology will change the auto body repair industry and the house painting industry."
Actually I think it has a lot to do with how she is put back in the garage after the very infrequent use.......
If she is washed, dried, polished and kissed after just taking her for a 5km run on a sunny day then she is a garage queen.
I think mines one-I get some sort of stupid delight in thinking to myself-"Oh good I haven't driven it for 3 weeks now and its nice and safe under the cover".And I get a strange pleasure in taking the cover off and just looking at it for a few minutes in a trance like state!!. Of course I love to drive it,but theres this other ridiculous paradoxical side.
My 996 seldom leaves the garage during the week and is only driven a couple thousand miles a year. I not only clean it after every weekend I use it but I also change the oil, pull off the wheels and re-torque the suspension. I only use 100 octane gas. I would never drive it on public road. I put it in an enclosed trailer and pull it around. This is scaring me. Do I have a garage queen?
