Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

that would be a good time to do it ....check the AOS, easy to get to while your there; same for hoses and seals, coolant lines, etc...
Leading evidence: 'Check aos, easy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I ordered the LN IMS bearing for my 2003 996 tip yesterday from LN (flat6 is closed for the week)
I was hopeing to install the bearing myself and was reading posts that I searched about tip/bearing installs.
My headache started when I read that for 2001+ tips, you had to remove the engine to do this job.
Can anyone verify this? I can't imagine why this would be.
Thanks- John
quick and dirty.......you can remove the engine, but dropping the trans is what most people have done. Tips are little more involved than manual. If you feel comfortable dropping the trans, the real work starts when getting to remove the IMS. make sure your at TDC, lock the cams, remove the tensionsers, use the IMS removal tool.
Have you updated the RMS seal? that would be a good time to do it ....check the AOS, easy to get to while your there; same for hoses and seals, coolant lines, etc...
Change the engine oil...your done! Good luck and enjoy...
my money is on trans removal.... I will ask the guys today which they prefer... they have been doing these at a growing pace and by now have it down to a pretty normal proceedure. Its at a point where if I still had not done my 99' I think I would just have them do it...
I was thinking engine removal for an overhaul (while you are there stuff), if your car has higher mileage, makes sense. Low mileage should go the trans route.
If you look at the post- Tiptroic, clutch, & ims by Classico, which i replied to today, and go to to post #8 you will see what I am bothered by. The Porsche Surgeon says that 2002+ tips you must pull engine to do the ims.
Not to insult him, but I hope he is wrong. I have been reading posts for a couple weeks trying to pump myself up to do this myself and 5 minutes after I order the bearing, I find this post!

I have spoken with my indi in the past, but didn't get to that point of having to drop the engine in the 02 996's. I am just as curious..
might have something to do with the Vario cam plus???
not likely, that's really an engine internals thing, and the actuators are on the side of the motor , but the transmission is completely different in the 02+ cars
