If the oil level not too full and the oil is of the proper type and fresh and you haven't been idling the engine for 1000 miles I'd say the AOS is due to be replaced.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had my manifold off yesterday and there was a bit of oil in the intake plenums. The engine doesn't smoke that I've noticed and I haven't noticed a drop in oil level although I've probably only put 1000 miles on this engine since getting it. There was enough oil in the intake that if turned the right direction I could get a little bit to run out. The AOS has 66k miles on it. Is it time to replace the AOS?

POST 2Original post

last time I cleaned up mine, and I did have a full quart of oil overfill in the engine, I only had a mist in the intake and plenum. If you have more than that, I think the AOS might be the culprit, but when the AOS is dead it seems it pours oil all over.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I put 10 quarts of oil in it when I installed it in the car. But the engine was more or less completely dry (sat for over a yr and I had the oil pan off). I started with 8.5 qts and over the course of a couple weeks added more until it got to the middle of the dip stick and gauge on the dash, so I don't think it's overfilled.

What is the history of the engine? 1000 miles since getting it? Is the engine a new engine? Regardless that amount of oil seems excessive. Porsche techs tell me though invariably when they have any reason to gain access to the intake manifold more often than not the intake walls are oil wet. From overfilling the oil and possibly running the oil too long between oil changes. At 66K miles the AOS is getting close to where it can go bad. If the oil level not too full and the oil is of the proper type and fresh and you haven't been idling the engine for 1000 miles I'd say the AOS is due to be replaced. I don't like replacing something before its time but it is clear that the AOS is a wear item and needs periodic replacement. And best to do this on your terms rather than wait for the thing to go bad at some inconvenient time. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its a used engine with 55k miles on it. I bought it from a fellow rennlister. My old man was at the indie shop today where we get our alignments done and they told him that it's normal. And no, the car hasn't been idling for 1000 miles, I run the **** out of it . The aos is off my old boxster engine though, and thus the 66k miles on it.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 7699304

Hard to know how much oil is normal in the intake. It is I think clear the AOS is not up to the job so many engines run with some oil wetness in the intake and smoke upon startup from it. Still, keep an eye out for any other symptoms like hunting idle, or of course CEL and persistent and prolonged smoking upon startup. An AOS can go from good to bad in practically no time. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 7Original post

i replaced my aos as part of the 60k service and preventative maint. They aren't that expensive and will save you a headache if you get stuck.
