Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. With few exceptions everyone seems to like the SSK, no matter were it is installed so you probablly cant go wrong with either approach.

I got the B&M under car short shift kit installed a while back and love it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

no amount of fusing with the cables has cured the problem.
Want to go with short shift kit...B&M or techquipment shift kit? B&M is much cheaper but I have heard good and bad about the B&M...
Any advice would be helpful!

The B&M (on a 986S) and the TechArt (on a 996TT). I didn't like either because the shifts, although shorter, were too "stiff." Further, some of the shifts were shorter (i.e. 2, 4 and 6) than others (1, 3 and 5). Maybe they weren't installed correctly, but the shops that did them had good reputations. Bottom line, I didn't I was shifting any faster.
I would suggest trying a CCZ (?) optioned car, maybe at Hoehn?
I have the B&M in a '04 996. While I cannot compare it to anything other than stock or past cars (with and without short shifts), I like it a lot.
Much shorter and more direct shifts. Complements the car's feel - solid/precise. 1 thru 4 are equal length. 5 & 6 are different as is stock. Takes about 1,500 miles to completely break-in.
I got the B&M under car short shift kit installed a while back and love it. Some people have said the in car SSK increases the shifting effort too much and makes shifts notchy, which I didn't want, and the under car kit doesn't cause those issues. The RUF and TechArt under car kits are basically the same, except for the color, and 2X - 3X price!

It seems like more people have installed the in car SSK (don't know why). With few exceptions everyone seems to like the SSK, no matter were it is installed so you probablly cant go wrong with either approach. The B&M (in car) is identical to the Porsche branded SSK (made by B&M) so I dont see how you can go wrong with that choice.
I have an extra B&M in car (new in box) ... e-mail / PM me if you are interested.
B&M installed and it works great. My wife (5'2" 108lbs) has no problem with the added shift effort. She finds it a pleasant improvement over the stock. If you decide on the B&M do a search for help w/the install. You will save some time and grief.
post b&m, i've had some trouble selecting 3rd when upshifting from 2nd. no amount of fusing with the cables has cured the problem. other than that, it's been a worthwhile modification.
Go with the under-car B&M. I had the in-car and it was OK. I felt an under-car and the difference was significant. The under-car is much easier to get into gear and less notchy. The throws are adjustable to boot. I'm installing my under-car tonight.
I agree, go with the under the car B & M. I have the other and it is a bit notchy for my taste especially when the car is cold. I may even swap out mine for an under the car version down the road if I can return it to stock.
I would stick with what the factory uses, that being the in-car short shifter. You can get the factory SSK for $440 or LESS at some dealers (Braman, Suncoast). At this price point it's a reasonable alternative to the B&M if you want to keep the car 100% Porsche and not worry about warranty issues.
BTW it's quite easy to go back to stock, just get some Evo needle bearings and it's a 30 minute job.
