They took the suspension completely apart and checked over everything, nothing showed any wear, so that's when the hooked up the microphones and determined it was the tie rods.

I had also heard of another car that had these same symptoms and he replaced the lower ball joints which took care of his problem.

I recently ran accross another guy on rennlist who had these same problems and said he replaced the drop links (which I've done) and replaced the lower ball joints.

For example, today, it didn't start happening until after I had been driving the car consecutively for 4 hours (getting lunch, running errands, doing some touring etc).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I do want to get it fixed, but it seems like one of those things that happens at specific times and those times are when the service dept aren't open.
Hi All,
Some background:
2003 Porsche C4S
13,500 Miles
A few weeks back, I noticed a "clunking" sound when I would drive at low speeds (around 30mph or slower). The noise appeared most noticeable when I would go over a bump or inperfection in the road. Also, it would happen while turning and could be heard moreso when I made a right turn than a left turn. The next morning, I took it to the dealer. However, as everyone knows, there was no noise beeing made and the service guys couldn't find anything.
After driving it a couple of more weeks I noticed the following:
1) The "clunking" noise seemed only to appear on warmer weather (at least for us in NE) which was 45 degrees and above
2) The "clunking" noise also only became apparent after driving long periods during the day. For example, today, it didn't start happening until after I had been driving the car consecutively for 4 hours (getting lunch, running errands, doing some touring etc).
3) With my foot just barely touching the clutch I could "feel" the clunking as I could through the steering wheel and brake.
I don't know if anyone has any ideas of what this is or should I be overly concerned. I do want to get it fixed, but it seems like one of those things that happens at specific times and those times are when the service dept aren't open.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks!
You might want to drive it until it starts making the noise again and then pick up you service adviser at the dealership. Hopefully you can then replicate the noise with him in the car.
Do you have an after-market suspension? I thinking that its one of the front springs not seating properly on the strut perch that when you go over a bump the spring leaves a small gap from the perch then goes back in, hence the clunking sound?
Thanks for both your replies. I don't have aftermarket springs, but it is something I will ask them about. I have to swap out my winter tires soon and want them to thoroughly look into this.
I have this same problem with my 1999, it drives me nuts, neither one of our shops has figured it out. I recently ran accross another guy on rennlist who had these same problems and said he replaced the drop links (which I've done) and replaced the lower ball joints. I may just have the dealer replace the ball joints and see if that works. Let me know what you find out on this.
i had this before, replaced lower-control arm solved it.
can you tell which side of the frount clunking sound come?
park your car, open truck, push your car down. see if you can duplicate the noise.
good luck
I have the same problem..... started after the PSS9 install... Right front... had the srpings looked at and of course they can't find anything.....
Just spent the weekend at Willow Springs and the car did fine.... still makes the noise though.... and it still bothers me...
I am very interested to see what fixes this.....
I am going to ask the shop to Remove and re-install the springs to see if it could be what Mike mentioned above..... I'll report back what I find, if anything....
I just received my 1999 C2 back and they hooked up different channel microphones to the front end on various parts to try and figure out what was making the noise. My symptoms were, it took a little driving time to hear the noise and at really slow speeds you could here the clunk really well and could feel it through the clutch pedal. They ended up replacing the inner and outer tie rods on the drivers side and this took care of the problem. I had also heard of another car that had these same symptoms and he replaced the lower ball joints which took care of his problem.
Clunking on bumps is typically front ball joints. Not sure why the noise has stopped, but you can still tell bad ball joints just by looking at them, no need for the sound to start happening again (also, FWIW, when ball joints finally go, enjoy your wheel popping out and your suspension collapsing while you are moving).
The reason the noise stopped, was because they fixed the problem. They took the suspension completely apart and checked over everything, nothing showed any wear, so that's when the hooked up the microphones and determined it was the tie rods.
