Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
It was right before a track event and I always run with the hardtop on for added safety.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Get it fixed quick either way or it will leave you stranded.
Hey all!
After about 2 years I have rejoined this great community and have a new car to boot!
Just purchsed a new to me 2001 996 cab, Orient Red over gray, 30K miles. 2 issues: 1. My check engine light came on a few days ago but then went off. This afternoon it came on again and has not gone off. ????
2. My ignition switch when starting the car does not spring to the full on position. Is this some sort of spring that has malfunctioned?
Thanks yall. Good to be back
The ignition switch is a cheap DIY fix, but you have to be able to stand on your head and use a 1 inch screwdriver simultansously. Get it fixed quick either way or it will leave you stranded. Audi VW part works. I think Porsche quit selling the individual part that goes on the back of the switch.
CEL is anyboday's guess. You will need OBDC at a minimum, but likely a dealer to trouble shoot it with Porsche tester
Thanks. Is there a diagram anywhere? I can't see up in there from the floor. The clutch pedal keeps hitting me in the head.
I have a switch. It's black and round and has a few flat prongs. Not sure about part #.
pleven - Congrats on getting a nice looking Arena Red cab and Welcome back! The ignition switch replacement was discussed recently (2 to 4 weeks ago) in a thread. Try doing a search on "ignition" and I think that will lead you to some links on the Renntech Forum that shows DIY tips.
This was the discussion I used to relace the one on my Boxster. Got her done, but when same thing happened on the 996, I took it to a mechanic. He charged 200 or so labor, but not having the back pain for 3 days afterward was worth it.

Welcome to the club and congratulations on your acquisition of the most rare and beautiful color combination 996. As for the CEL, try cleaning the MAF (search in this thread for details), then disconnect the battery for a few minutes (make sure you have the radio code handy). That might work.
