Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While checking email the other day I came across the following website that was sent to me via friend who knows I like/own P-cars. It seems that this company in France has a wide body upgrade for the 996 that makes it into at least asthetically a 997! Have any of you guys seen this site before? Looks pretty good but I wonder what it would do for the dynamics of the 996 as well as how it would affect the car mechanically. I emailed the company and they quoted me approx $4800 US for the front facelift kit alone (997 lights and fenders, bumber and attachments) and $4800 for the rear wide body conversion. www.jacquemond.com Anybody know anybody who has done this or would attempt to mod their p-car in this way? Seems alot cheaper than buying a 997 for those inclinded to keep their current 996 but like the 997's more classic lines. Rob

POST 2Original post

we are working on one at the moment. It will be available in either FRP, CF or Dry Carbon (By special request). Lights will be sold separatly (OEM porsche units) and the kit will include a front bumper, front fenders and rear quarterpanels. I'll shoot you a PM with pricing and whatnot.

POST 3Original post

If you want a 997 buy a 997, I think if you ever tried to selll the car after it would be too hard.Great if your in the bedroom.....sucks if your selling a car!

POST 4Original post

This was featured in a magazine recently and I went to their webstie where they had side by side pics of before and after and that body kit makes the car look so bad. The 997 look is not made for the narrow body 996. Looks WAY out of place. It is one of those things that you would look at and think "something just isn't right about that car but I can't figure out why" As has been said, if you want a 997 sell your 996 and go buy a 997. This isn't the same as putting a turbo bumper on a narrow body, etc., this is trying to make your car something it isn't.

POST 5Original post

never do this to a porsche.....Porsche designs each model a particular way...that is what makes it a porsche....

POST 6Original post

Bondo Special, same catagory as widebody conversions, WTF is the point.

POST 7Original post

997 conversion looks off to me.... If anything, upgrade to 02 front

POST 8Original post

Personally, I will never do this to any car, it is what it is. But thanks for the link, it's always interesting to see how people spend their money.

POST 9Original post

This conversion was featured in "Total 911", November 2005.

POST 10Original post

I bought a 996 because I think it is the perfect shape. Slim and sexy. If you want a fat car buy a 997 or a 993 or a 930. That's the great thing about a 911 they come in all shapes and sizes but they are all 911's.

POST 11Original post

WTF... Why would anyone do this? What is the point? You want a 997 go BUY one... Besides the fact that the 997 does not look that much different anyways... 996 looks better ...

POST 12Original post

Although I like the 997 lines, I would never convert the 996 to look like a 997. Would be best just to go and buy one like everyone said. This thread reminds me of that like that guy who converted his car to a carrera GT that was listed on ebay a few weeks ago, looks way off to the trained eye.

POST 13Original post

Funny responses considering how many of you modify your cars Look, you have a '99 that is worth $30k. Suppose you would rather update the look than pay the $55k difference....only to get into ANOTHER massive depreciation cycle. So slap these on and pay $5k to re-paint the car another color and you've got a car that feels new.

POST 15Original post

Well the money for one. If I had an accident and needed a front end I'd seriously consider this on my 99. The fact is, that if I was going to spend the money then I'd think.. well I should do an 02 front end.. and the VALID argument about resale issues for the 997 is just as valid for a 99 with an 02 front. With that in mind I'd be tempted to go 997.. I prefer oval headlights. Keith

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys...hold up... I was not saying I would DO it yo MY 996. I like both the 996 and the 997 and would be so inclinde to have one of each (if they wife didn't kill me if I tried! LOL). Both have their pluses. I was just asking had anybody else seen this out there? And curious if anybody had done it yet and if so what they thought of their vehicle before and after. I agree it is so radical a modification if you can call it that so that if you did it to your vehicle your re-sale value would probably tank other than with a few select buyers who would want it. And for the $10K you'd spend on part plus another $3-5k getting the work done and that paint matched and everything fitted out just right...hell why not put THAT $$ down on a 997 or maybe even a nice Cayman S! Sorry if I offended anyone or cause "shock and awe" here...was just soliciting an opinion of the members of something new and interesting that was presented to me for 996's!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now like Keith and a few others mentioned. If you had a wreck and needed a whole new front end sheetmetal wise. Then redoing the front end with one of these refurb kits for the 997 front end might not be a bad idea. Afterall you'd already have the depreciation from the accident and repair anyway correct? I mean what is the difference between this and the slant nose conversion of earlier carrera's (weren't they 993's) that I remember seeing in the 1980's and early 1990's? Just a thought..

POST 18Original post

No need to apologize, I'm sure it didn't offend anyone here The main thing, whatever the mod may be, is to enjoy the hell out of your car. Going against some popular thought, if you want to mod your car a certain way and think the 997 conversion will bring a grin to your face, then do it! hell, you only live life once... but being the factor of resale, the amount of $ it may cost and aesthetic improvements of the conversion, there are much more (and subjectively) better options out there And if you did get into a wreck and the front end needs to be repaired, I would invest in a 02+ conversion (like I previously said) way before the 997

POST 19Original post

They didn't make this kit with the intent to sell to people that have wrecked their cars... They would lose their shirt if that was their only targeted market. I still would not do it if I had wrecked my car.. But hey it's your money, spend it in whatever way you get enjoyment and satisfaction...

POST 20Original post

Yeah, I realize that.. but that ( accident ) is the only circumstance I would consider this mod.. I for SURE would not replace my 99 front end with standard if I had an accident - but it is true that an 02 996 front end would be a less drastic step. I think that "boxter nose" will be the curse of the 99-01 car in terms of value and ease of resale in 5 years and I think that there WILL be a money conscious group of buyers who would be MORE likely to buy a mk1 with a different nose to get them into a porsche.. and that they would pay 996 mk 1 book price for it. Let's face it. The 996 Mk 1 is never going to be considered in the same way as the 993 or even the 964 in terms of authenticity. There are simply too many of them and the extent to which they are modified without a second thought is testament to this. Keith

POST 21Original post

this is going to be a stupid arguement years down the road. look at those who convert 914/911/964/993 to 914-6/RSR/turbo look/slantnose/930/935/993GT2/etc,. anyone look down on those? hmmmm.... there are always purists out there and they need to relax

POST 22Original post

996 design harkens to the GT1 EVO that won LeMans. Original, simple, aerodynamic lines, untethered and organic.

POST 23Original post

I love the conversion kit, would never buy it, because like is said before, buy a 997...but I love the rond headlights on the 997 and if I would have front damage I would convert to the 997 front on my 996....If I had rear damage I would go for the 996 turbo rear. I like the 996 interior and don't know if I like the 997 interior in the longrun....but if I have the money I would buy a 997...love the lines and rond headlight and bigger butt.... I don't think your depriciation will be more....maybe even less

POST 24Original post

not to mention the cost. If I had a 99' I'd upgrade to an 05' when I learned to **** money
