If they are stuck you can pull down the interior trim pieces to unbolt and replace the mounts.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
A couple of queries on bike racks.
What is your order/method of fitting and removal? (ie roof racks on first then attach bike racks, or store the racks already assembled and put the whole lot on as one).
Which bike racks do you use and what do you think of them? I am particularly interested in wheels-on models and whther the Porsche-branded ones are any good.
Thanks, Ben
I have the mtn bike rack which i leave mounted on cross rails. So for install, 1st mount the blocks, then drop the whole thing on and secure.
I have labeled the mounting blocks so they go the same corner every time....I tried to get a spare allen bolt, the one that holds the rack on, dealer will only sell the assembly $$$$
I had a Will Rack system on my Boxster that I loved. I now have a 996 and will likely do the same if I keep the car. I'm a Cabriolet guy so I don't have many other choices but even if I drove a Coupe I would probably go Will Rack. Less wind noise, no chance of "forgetting" and driving into a garage with Ike's on top, etc.
Personally I am a huge fan of Yakima products. I have their High Roller model because I have a few different bikes of my own, plus my fiance's, that dont all fit on the same universals racks, but they work on this one. I have their Fat Cat 6 for my skis and board which is also nice, very sturdy and quiet compared to other products. Whether you buy Yakima or not, I suggest you give to products a look.
Ben,
I use the Porsche brand bars and rack. I purchased mine from Pelican Parts. Before you purchase the factory rack make sure you can take out the dummy screws under the roof flaps. If they are stuck you can pull down the interior trim pieces to unbolt and replace the mounts. Porsche updated the dummy screws to plastic on the 997.
I have been extremely happy with the rack. It is very sturdy and well built with extra security built into it.
I was caught in a wind storm on I-70 with 40-60 mph winds and it never moved. It handles well in The corners and I have also had the car up to 90 with happy results. My only gripe is the rack whistles above 40mph but I just keep the sunroof closed and adapted to the noise.
I get a lot of reactions too. People love the fact that a Porsche has a roof rack and it seems to blow their minds.
