I recently replaced my PS2s and went with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 285/30s on the rears because of the SS availability.

I run the PSS on my C4S in a 285/35R18 in the rear and 225/45R18 in the front.

Without spacer my wheels have this effect though not nearly as dramatic, so I use the spacers to push them out closer to the fenders.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Was doing the oil change yesterday and saw its time to buy new rear tires again... Annual cost of porsche membership I suppose. So I've done some research and narrowed it down to the new Michelin super sports which is the ps2 replacement it seems. My question for those in the know, do I go with 265/35/18 or 275/35/18? And yes I've searched here and 6speed finding discussion on the tire but little about the sizing.
Thanks in advance!
Yes, that's the accurate Oem size, but Michelin went away from it in the ps2 and super sports, so I have to get close. Currently I've got 275/30/18 ps2's in the rear, but that's not an option for the super sports.
PS2 has a wear rating of 220 and SS is at 300, so that's a perk of SS. But the PS2 is still a great tire. Unless Michelin is phasing it out, the size difference will keep it alive, along-side the SS.

Tire Rack has a very user friendly interface for finding specific tires, in sizes that will work for you.
My fealty to Porsche chassis engineers exceeds my love of Michelin's tires. The 285 came about after Porsche added both weight and horsepower to the rear with the 3.6 (and yes, i know 17" wheels were standard).
If it were me, I would switch to another N rated 285 tire. I've been running Conti DWs and really like them.

No good options there. I love the SuperSports so if I were in your position I would wait until your tires have exposed threads, hoping a Michelin replacement becomes available. Assuming you have the option not to drive your 996 in heavy rain.
If you were interested you could change sizing slightly.
I run the PSS on my C4S in a 285/35R18 in the rear and 225/45R18 in the front. OD differences between the front and back are minimal, and the load and speed rating exceed that of the correct sized PS2. With spacers in the back of my car, the slight stretch of the 285 tucks a little nicer into the rear fenders giving a more flush look than the 295's which had slight rubbing issues with the spacers.
I'm running 265/35 -18 on my '02 c2 ..that was option size for all season tires ... Grip at rear is no problem ... Under steers at front at limit . Maybe if you are hardcore track guy you can tell a difference. Can't vouch for c4s however ..
Thanks to everyone that chimed in. I continue to think part of the fun of owning the 996 is the community, which is priceless! Damon, I'll give you a call this week.
Thats odd because my C4S has Mich PS2 rears that are 295 / 30 / 18"/. They will lose grip under power while turning, so Im not that impressed with them. Why do you need the spacers? I think you can run 315's without spacers, right?
You can run a 315 on the stock wheel. The reason I went with spacers was because with it being lowered, the wheels had a sunken battleship look to them. I put on spacers to have the wheels fit more flush with the fender. As far as traction in concerned the difference between 285 and 295 widths will be minimal as far as traction is concerned. Rubber compound and tread design will make a lot bigger difference when traction is concerned versus 1cm in extra rubber. Also I was concerned with tire rub on the outter rear quarter not rubbing inside.
That being said I dont really worry about traction issues because I do not track my C4S often since I have another dedicated track car.
Wheel offset will affect what if any spacer you can fit.
With 285's I had 15mm but when I went to 295's with the 15mm the car looked 80's Camaro, 7mm pulled the tire just inside the top of the wheel well.
Like I said, with 285's on my turbo twists, and 23mm spacers they fit pretty flush with my fenders, about as good as I can do without rubbing or rolling my fenders.
Jordan, can you post a side and rear view of yours to give me an idea of the "look" your referring to. I still dont get why you have 23MM spacers. Thats right at 1" which seems excessive. Maybe a wider wheel would help?
The reason I asked is I would like to move up to a wider tire, maybe 315 / 30 to help keep the rear end from coming around. Maybe 235 / 40 in front.
I will post up a pic tomorrow when I get a chance. A new wheel is the best option with an offset that gives me exactly what I want, or even a similar width wheel with a different offset would work as well. I am in search of a new wheel, just dont know exactly what I want. I want it to be different, but have a timeless look, but be something that no one has, and I dont think I want dish. The look of a wheel will make or break the look of a car, and is a big investment (cost wise) into it for it to be something wrong. I love the look of the Stock Twist and havent seen anything aftermarket that make me want to jump for it. maybe I will get some 996 GT2 twists.
Really if I wanted I could break any tire loose it's not that hard whether it's a 215 wide or 315 wide. For the way I use my vehicle a 285 provides all the traction I need. If you are in that much need of traction maybe look to an R compound rubber. A Pilot Sport Cup in a 265 will provide days more traction than your 295 PS2's. The 295's in a PS2 will provide loads more traction than a 315 in a hankook Ventus V12. Like I said I believe traction is more affected by rubber compound and tread design than a centimeter either way in tread width. Also I find that with a 285 in the back the feelings of understeer are reduced. I find that with 225's in front and 295's in the back and no weight up front you feel the front start to let go far earlier than you loose traction in the rear giving understeer. Though the 285 may have less traction than a 295 the 285 is better matched to the 225 front in providing a more balanced traction. I think my set of summers this year will be 235/40R18 fronts and 285/35R18 rears to give an even more balanced feel. If you want to go 315's in the rear, the proper fitment would be 315/30R18 rears and 235/40R18 fronts.
Here is an example of what I am talking about. This white porsche has sunken battleship fitment where the wheels are sunken into the fenders. This is a look I am trying to avoid. Without spacer my wheels have this effect though not nearly as dramatic, so I use the spacers to push them out closer to the fenders.
This C4S which I always use to describe the flush fitment is what I am looking for though not quite as agressive as I need to roll my fenders, and preferably in an 18" wheel.
So true... all about balance.
twebb, you may get more guidance if you post more info, ie. driving style, what tires are up front wheel specs... whatever you choose, make sure the size is correct for the wheel.
I recently replaced my PS2s and went with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 285/30s on the rears because of the SS availability. Couple of reasons, handling is nearly the same, tire wear is much better and per Michelin the only thing you're really giving up is braking. I've had them for 3k miles and worked them well in the Georgia mountain twisties and have been pleasantly surprised.
I have a chance to buy 2 brand new Michelin PS2 315/30ZR18 to use for rears only $600. The matching front should be 235 40ZR 18's. Will my current PS2 225 40ZR 18's work for awhile or will it stress the AWD VC? Suppose I need to check the D of both but sometimes that changes when mounted.
I also have a GT2 front sway that should be in this week. Front is 27mm rear will be 24mm. Will this combo put the handleing on par with a stock GT3 minus the engine HP of course?
I agree about the white car. I dont prefer that look. The camber looks off and its way too low. Even the grey car is too low for street use.
That tire combo should work as the difference in outside diameter is only 1.42% where I believe Porsche specifies nothing more than 3% but I believe it will create a stronger feeling of understeer since you will have a little more traction in the rear, but the same up front meaning the difference in force to break the rears free versus the fronts will be that much greater.
New swaybars will help handling but I would not put it on par with a GT3. The GT3 is RWD, The GT3 has an LSD where as you C4S does not, and the track width is different in the rear. The GT3 has a narrower rear end and narrower tires versus the C4S. I would never really call the C4s a track car. it is Track capable but not really meant for it imo. Look at any real race class. all the cars are FWD or RWD there are very few AWD race cars. Also pretty well any track car would have and LSD. If you want to improve your handling I would also look at your alignment that will impact the handling and traction charatcteristics of you car quite dramatically. If you have have your current alignment specs I would gladly give advice on a better alignment to help your handling.
I look at my P-car versus my Civic. My civic is FWD, has less horsepower, and much narrower tires, 225width all around, but with upgraded suspension, an awesome rubber compound, and agressively set up alignment, it handles much better on the short windy course by my house much better than my P-car, and gives times that my P-car wont match on its best day.
Just a quick update. I ended up going with the pilot super sport 275 35 18, and keeping the ps2's up front and am quite pleased. I don't track the car, but do drive aggressively. I have found that these have been a good choice for me so far with 100 miles on the rears at this point and no noticeable change in handling from my perspective.
