Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

all, i have been seriously interested in a seal grey/black interior 996 - preferably a 2002+because i much prefer the headlight design - i wish i could go for a turbo or 2005/6 model but my budget won't allow it. well my wife won;t allow it and its very difficult hiding a 2nd porsche - i could keep it at my girlfriends place? with that said, and not to go into too much detail approx 6 weeks ago i found a seal grey/grey interior car - the seller is about as nice a guy as one could deal with and the car has been well taken care of. it has a full grey interior including steering wheel and dash. i am on the fence about the grey interior - i really want black and have had a hard time finding one within my budget/that has good service history and or has had previous paint work. does anyone have photos of a grey interior car with darker grey or black carpets that they can upload to this post? - has anyone dyed their carpets? appreciate it

POST 2Original post

I have black floor mats and grey floor mats for my graphite grey interior and I do not like the look of the black on grey honestly but I will try to drop the black mats in tonight and snap a picture. I dressed my grey interior up with a alcantara wheel and body color console, it really brightened it up.

POST 3Original post

No picture, but some thoughts. From what I have seen, black wears much better. The gray shows every scuff, particularly around the doors and sills. Black hides much of those. Wear marks and scratches in the plastic reveal a black underneath. Again, this does not really show with a black interior, but jumps out with gray or tan. My other interior suggestion is to hold out for a car with full leather. The surfaces are so much better, visually and tactilely. Black carpets do show dirt, fluff, and hair that gets tracked in and the black interior is dark, but a set of custom Coco Mats in black with paint matching highlights solved the dirt problem and brightened up the interior. That and some aluminum trim pieces make for a very upscale look. People getting in my car for the first time always seemed surprised at how nice it looks.

POST 4Original post

I also prefer the black but my Audi A3 has a gray interior and it has been great. If the car has everything you want except the interior color, and since you will most likely only keep the car for 1 or 2 years, why not just go for it?

POST 5Original post

I hear you.. Personally i put more importance on the interior color than exterior. Black is the best interior color choice, especially with the full leather interior. Don't compromise and hold out for your first choice... Btw I had my 996 for seven years and the black full leather looked like new when I sold it earlier this year.. Good luck

thats what i'm thinking of doing - however i see a lot of silver/grey and grey/grey cars sitting on the market not selling - i don't think many buyers like the grey interior so selling the car may be more difficult. would appreciate seeing any photos if anyone has some to share - i remember a post here several months ago from someone who did dark grey carpets but i can;t find it.

I have grey interior (but Lapis Blue body). I was "meh" on the grey but have grown to like it. I painted the center console Lapis Blue (you could do black or carbon but bewarned it ain't cheap) and put in Cocomats that are black with little blue specs in them. Everybody loves the interior.

I think that is the key with any 996 (non full leather) interior. You have to break it up color wise. Even a full black standard 996 interior (with few interior options) looks like Darth Vaders bathroom. The Metropol Blue interior (not my first choice) on my car was bearable. Once I cleaned up the shifter/ebrake setup, installed a Alumna look horseshoe upper console and a matching rear console it really helped to make the interior more asthetically pleasing to me. IMO on the 996/986 all black, all blue, all Savanna beige, all grey, and let's not forget that awful Nephrite Green interiors look like crap.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i received a couple of emails from owners who have had their carpets dyed a darker grey - thanks for making the effort - really appreciate it. the darker carpets make the interior look much more rich.

POST 13Original post

You mean the deviated carpets like mine? I've added the Porsche OEM floor mats since pic was taken.

POST 15Original post

Thanks, I do prefer the black carpet over the full gray interior. Bet that gray carpet is really hard to keep clean.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i remember your post - like the contrast - is your car black? do you know where to get a dark grey or black carpet set for a 996?

POST 17Original post

My car is Lapis Blue exterior with the light grey interior which is exactly the combination I wanted. I prefer it over the Lapis Blue with black interior. It depends largely on how the interior colour will match with the exterior colour. I have black mats and they look great with the grey. The only problem with the grey is that in some areas it chips easily and exposes the black plastic underneath. This is mainly around the rear half of the centre console I intend to have the console colour-coded same as the exterior as others have done.

POST 18Original post

I have full leather interior and I mixed it up with some black (seats, floor mats)and some tequipment alumalook accessories and alcantara trim .I like the combination.

Wow that's the frist gray interior i would consider owning.

POST 21Original post

It's a personal choice. For me, I always keep in mind, I sit IN the car and therefor have to look at it. I better like it. A lot. I actually passed on a car that had white gauges because I don't like them.
