Suspected cause
Probably the TUV approved symbol for grenade - but why would they want a grenade symbol on a Porsche product....

Suggestion
Based on this thread, I went out and found the Battery Tender Plus on Amazon for $39.99 and guess what....it does exactly the same thing that the $130 one with the fancy Porsche nomenclature does, but granted, it doesn't have the icons for the motorcycle....plus it has accessories for cigarette lighter, permanent disconnect hookup to the terminals, and the alligator clips.
Leading evidence: 'tuv approved symbol' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tuv approved symbol' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect hookup' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You have one that DESULFATES the battery while it is changing the battery?

-Should there be a problem with me starting it up once about every week/1.5 weeks and letting it run for about 15-20 minutes?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is my first winter with a 996. I have a heated garage in which it will be stored. I also plan to drive the car when weather and road conditions permit. It will however go for several weeks between drives. Any ideas/suggestions for a batter charger/maintainer?
Thanks,
Leon
I'm in the same position- 1st winter, have it in a somewhat heated garage (maybe 40 at the low), and will take it out when weather permits.
I just bought a Schumacher also. But since I want to keep the car covered, I can't really have the unit in the trunk with the trunk closed, at least that's how it appears in the instructions. I'd have to either take the battery out to keep the cover on or not cover the car and keep the hood open.
Another question - and I've done lots of searching and seen many answers
-Should there be a problem with me starting it up once about every week/1.5 weeks and letting it run for about 15-20 minutes? I may only back it out of the garage. Or should I really take it on a 10-15 drive?
Always better to drive if possible, That wya more than just the engine gets warmed up, i.e.; tires are rotated to prevent flat spots, suspension gets a bit of a work out, etc.
However, start-up and idle is better than doing nothing provided you get the engine up to oeprating temp.
Whichever tender you decide on, make sure in addition to offering a trickle charge, you also get one that desulphates the battery. This will contribute a lot to longer battery life. I'm a fan of the Battery Minder, but I'm sure there are others out there that do both.
I have the OEM unit that plugs into the cigarrette lighter. You can actually put the wire in the door at the bottom of the door and close it on the wire without damaging the wire/unit. This makes it easy to cover the car and keep the battery charged. I keep my car garaged and covered in the winter and drive when the weather permits.
You have one that DESULFATES the battery while it is changing the battery? I DON"T THINK SO!!!!! and if you do, it ain't workin' correctly! Remember last winter?
I was actually trying to help! NO... REALLY..... I WAS!!!!
Be cautious about only 10-15 minutes run time. If you run it, it should come up to full temp--then an additional 20mins or so to get moisture out of the crankcase--real driving not idling. General concensus seems to be that a short engine run is worse than not starting it.
Wow Phil, I never realized that the Porsche battery charger was so versatile. Looking at it from right to left I noticed that you can charge a car, or a motorcycle, or an apple!

Geez Tim.....all those fancy icons on there to show the versatility of what is nothing more than a charger that administers about 1.5 amps on a charge then drops to a trickle and has a cutoff to prevent overcharge? Based on this thread, I went out and found the Battery Tender Plus on Amazon for $39.99 and guess what....it does exactly the same thing that the $130 one with the fancy Porsche nomenclature does, but granted, it doesn't have the icons for the motorcycle....plus it has accessories for cigarette lighter, permanent disconnect hookup to the terminals, and the alligator clips. But then again....it doesn't say "Porsche" so it probably doesn't work as well. Oh yeah...it also has idiot lights so you can just look at it and see what phase it's in...full charging, float, or long term maintenance mode.
Tim, that's clearly not an apple, it's a bomb icon!
Probably the TUV approved symbol for grenade - but why would they want a grenade symbol on a Porsche product....
I think you are correct, that is a grenade. Maybe the pin on the grenade is connected electro-magnetically and the pin is wired to a lithium battery. As long as there is a charge in the battery, the pin stays in place and the grenade in harmless. But if that battery dies, the grenade pin goes flying and....... well, you know what happens next!
That is the second reason that Phil's car will never grenade. Obviously, the primary reason it won't grenade is because he never starts it. However, since his car is perpetually hooked up to the battery "life support system," then there is no way the pin will be flying off of Phil's grenade.
However, I do have on question. Is it possible to get a sulfated lithium battery?
It took a while, but I finally got there Phil!
It's the middle of January. It's 13 damn degrees here today and my car is now a charter member of the Porsche Winter Hospice Program. But, I'm gonna start that baby up tomorrow if it kills me (or it). That's if the doors aren't frozen shut.
