Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking at adding a 02-03 996 to my garage. A dealer has a CPO'ed 03 with 30k miles and he wants $33,000 for it. Standard options...PSM, leather, heated seats, sports exhaust they won't go any lower. Is this reasonable? thanks

POST 3Original post

I think that is a good price, especially with CPO.

POST 4Original post

Sounds like a great price for a CPO'd 2003. What color and what wheels? It's not a Tip is it?

POST 6Original post

In this market pretend you are wearing a mask holding a gun, walk away he will call !

POST 7Original post

is there an ad link you can post for us to look at.... ????

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

not a tip grey and blue not sure about the wheels

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 6180866

If the interior is blue it will limit the number of potential buyers but the dark blue interior (almost black) is nice IMO. I think it still sounds like a good buy.

POST 10Original post

30k for 33k miles with a CPO is well within acceptable limits.

POST 12Original post

This a C2 or C4S? Doesn't sound like a bad deal b/c of the CPO. maybe a dumb question - does the CPO add on when/if you buy it, or was it already CPOd and about to run out?

POST 13Original post

Sounds like a great deal actually. These prices make me sick as a 996 owner. Feels like I wouldn't be able to give my '02 away if I needed to sell.

OK, due to the overwhelming number of requests (1) for pics of what my car looks like, here is a pic. Yes, it is a pic from the Honda web site. I promise you that the number of pics I will take of my Honda will be equal to the number of days Phil's car will be driven in the snow.

POST 19Original post

Seems a little high. You can get it for less.

POST 20Original post

Awe.....I think its time to put our foot down and give Tim the "Pics or Ban" even if it is a Honada

I can't take any pics of my car. Other thatn rain, it hasn't been washed on over 4 months. And no, I am NOT kidding!

oh boy... this is going to get ugly.............. Refusing to post... car dirty....rain....CAN'T..... I think you are about to get dumped on by the photo patrols...... You can't duck this one

POST 24Original post

By the way, my dogs ate my nice black rubber hose from Sears... They refused to give me a replacement!! Craftsman FOREVER warrentee MY A**!!! I had to wait for a 100' to come on sale and bought it today for $39.... Drove home and washed my car in 38 degree weather at 6 pm... completely dark out. Dried it up and pulled to the garage. Opened all the openings and dried everything I could. (not enough room to walk around it IN the garage) Man - does that feel better, it had been over a month or bad weather driving. Tucked my baby in, talked sweetly to her and can't wait to get out tomorrow and drive her!!!

I would say it's reasonable right now. About the CPO, check and see when the actual CPO started (thus ends). I know current 996 owners don't want to hear this, but having shopped very hard the last 3 months, and your number is around what I've ended up getting to. Times are very rough for dealers right now and the market doesn't know what to do. I spent an hour with a friend of mine who works for a non-P dealer and buys through the auctions. We went through the auction results over the last 4 weeks, including what was being offered for sale between dealers. The 996s and Boxsters are not selling, and there are a bunch of them out there (especially Cabs and Boxsters). Was the 33k out the door? I got a CPO'd '04 with 34k miles offered a little better. I say that because this was out the door (tax, tag, etc), so I figured it was being sold around 30k . It did not have sport exhaust but a bunch of other options. It was originally listed at 39,995. I Google'd the VIN and found where the car was listed at 42k just a few months ago. I ended up passing for a number of reasons. One being I've been told there are a wave of off-leases about to show up starting this spring and it's a concern for dealers. This, along with the economy, will drive down the prices of older 996s even further. Low milage Caymans are already dropping like a rock. BMW is running into the same problem. How long this holds true is really unknown.

You've already posted one -- which is one more than the # of days my Porsche will see snow (or rain for that matter). BTW, I like the look of the Accord coupe. But if you Photoshop that one to look really dirty, like yours does, we'll get a better idea of what yours really looks like. Sort of like Madonna without any makeup.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 6185262

Good analogy. Surprisingly, the car isn't THAT dirty. I guess the occasional rain shower has kept it tolerable.

Very informative and on-topic. Thanks for your post, hope it doesn't get overlooked with all the OT talk...

POST 29Original post

Eight different posters told the OP that they thought it was a decent buy and one person stated he thought the OP could do better. However, it is still up to the OP to make the fiinal decision. Nifty stated that he passed on an '04 for about $33 +/- out the door (he never did give an exact amount), because he felt he could get a better deal later. He is rolling the dice that cars coming off lease will drive the price even lower. He may be right about better deals in the future, but that will be driven by the current economy rather that off lease cars. There are always cars coming off lease. Most leases are between 36 and 48 months, so the majority of the the '04 996 cars that were purchased new have already come off lease. There will be, and have been, some '05 and '06 997 that are coming off lease, but we are talking about the 996 here.

POST 30Original post

I would offer lower. 05 997's are now hitting the mid/upper $30k on eBay. Wholesale would be even less

POST 31Original post

I think it is a good deal. Cannot always look at wholesale and eBay. The one your interested in CPO and from a Porsche dealer.

POST 32Original post

The strongest bargaining position is when you've got nothing to lose and are willing to walk away. Even though the dealer stated they won't go any lower, you don't know what happens when you walk. All the background info stated on value matters very little when it gets down to the actual negotiation. Give them your best offer you believe you could sell it for reasonably (presumably lower than the $33k) and walk, letting them think about it. There are way too many other cars out there and waiting just gives you the advantage, not the dealer. The only other factor is how badly you want to drive a 911 NOW. Being impatient in these times will be expensive.....

POST 33Original post

Spiff, you are correct. The biggest bargaining tool in your favor is being resolved to "walk away." It could be that the dealer is unwilling to or can't afford to sell you a car at a particular price that you offered, and I have no absolutely no problems with that. If I feel the price of a car is X dollars too high and am unwilling to pay that amount, even if that is the dealer's REAL bottom line price, then that is OK too. I move on and continue my search. Maybe the dealer calls me back, and maybe not. The only thing that tells me is that the "value" I placed on that car is too low, or the dealer's "value" on the car is too high and we could not arrive at a mutually agreeable price point. Never let the dealer/sales person see that your are crazy about the car. If they see that, they know that the odds are in their favor that they won't have to go as low as they can to get the sale. On the other hand, if you say something like "The options are good, but I am not really that crazy about the ______." The blank should be some thing that is not easy or inexpensive to change, like the interior or exterior color, even if that is the exact color you want. That lets them know you are not "in love" with the car and that it will take some work ($$$) on their part to "convince" you to buy it. Do your research, be ready to play their games, be resolved to beat them at their own games, and most important of all, be ready to walk. Beating them at their own game is, IMO, half of the fun of buying a car.

POST 34Original post

The strongest bargaining position is when you've got nothing to lose and are willing to walk away. Even though the dealer stated they won't go any lower, you don't know what happens when you walk I must have purchased at least six sport cars over the last 20 years from Dealers at prices that were well below their "won't go any lower" price. The way the game goes is that you make a reasonable offer, after you've done your research, the Dealer comes back with their lowest price, and you walk out. 90 % of the time the salesman calls you within 24 hours and agrees to your offer. In this market, I'd say it will be 100% of the time. Far more cars than buyers in this market. The key is to do your homework. Be tough but reasonable. In other words don't expect to get a $35K 996 for $20K.
