You tell the chip to reset the car and then plug it in to the car and it's all set.

It reads codes, gives the fault code summary and can erase codes/reset the computer.

Again, fine if you're running intel based macs (which I'm not), plus I refuse to install that POS otherwise known as Windows on any machine I ever own.

Fyi, I would get durametric software but want to be able to use the scanner on family members' cars if need be and I am not cool enough to have a totally Porsche family quite yet.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good deal for an OBD II code reader. Prices vary depending on zip code...

Bought mine from Harborfreight. I got the one where it would actually tell you the code definition and spent a little bit more cash. I think it was around $50 bucks shipped. P car codes need to be looked up anyway.
Codes can be ambiguous and sometimes one needs to be able to look at actual OBD-II data like O2 voltages, air flow, coolant temperature, long term fuel trims, etc to know what is actually wrong.
It helps if one can view this data in real time but also capture it over time and better yet download it to a PC and place it into a spreadsheet.
Being able to check readiness monitor results and even initiate some tests supported by the vehicle's engine controller nice too.
I've used an Actron code reader (and there are other brands/styles out there -- in fact my employer offers a trip/data logger which also can read error codes, erase errors and perform other similar functions) for years with my Porsche.
My Actron code reader doesn't support CAN (which newer vehicles will almost certainly use) but my Porsche doesn't use CAN, but ISO-9141-2 protocol.
Even though a more powerful code reader/data viewer can cost over $100 to maybe $200 mine has paid for itself oh about 20 times over.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I bought and Actron on sale from Amazon. I think I paid somewhere around $40 for mine. It reads codes, gives the fault code summary and can erase codes/reset the computer. You can buy ones with more features, but the Actron does everything that I need.
I have this one. I like it a lot. Has datalogging, code scanning/reset and other fun and nifty features.

OMG ! Did your car generate that code?
That's the "Replace with Porsche" Code
- by all means don't tell the dealer your car had that error, hurry up and trade it off !!!! The first time is not permanently burned into the ECU but if it shows up again, your car could spontaneously depreciate -
I bought mine from PEP boys, but that thing didn't really do much,,,so I returned it...they actually didn't want to take it back, because they said I used it....but I convinced them to take it back....and I am very convincing when I want to be!
I am about to purchase either this:

or

to troubleshoot an O2 sensor problem on my 986 that has been vexing me for a year. Is the extra 30 bucks worth it for internet updatability and ability to capture freeze frame parameters to anyone? Seems not to be to me.
Fyi, I would get durametric software but want to be able to use the scanner on family members' cars if need be and I am not cool enough to have a totally Porsche family quite yet.
I agree with your thoughts. A durametric software only reads P car codes but it reads it all. A OBDII scanner is more versatile but limited in getting all the info you want out of the pcar.

Why would I install an inferior OS on a machine when it comes with a far superior one installed? For the sake of a lousy code reader? Pur-leese!
I've never owned a windows based machine and never will. This house is a mac and UNIX only network thank you very much.
OK, OT we go, but... I spent quite a few years in the computer industry and there is a debate. Even a pretty good one. BTW, you're violating a Dell principle here, you have neglected to consider hacker motivation when assuming the Mac OS is more secure. Macs are more secure, the Mac OS has yet to be proven more secure because hackers seem to prefer the widest audience, therefore they concentrate on the PC.
FWIW, I am typing this on a Mac and there are no PCs in this house either.
Wayne, you want to borrow my code reader? I am certain it is compatible with a Mac and a Windows based PC. It is very versatile and quite amazing technology. BTW - do you read Japanese?
Ed,
It's a pretty versatile code reader. It does have a reset feature in the drop downs. You tell the chip to reset the car and then plug it in to the car and it's all set.
I kind of like the data logging for an intermittent CEL as you can leave the chip plugged in and if the CEL comes on, it records it. Then you can go about diagnosing it.
Unfortunately, it doesn't carry Porsche specific codes but it was smart enough to tell me which bank my friends O2 sensor was out of range on (in his 02 996) so it's pretty good. It's a nice tool for multiple cars in the family as all my cars and my wife's are OBD II.
One of my favorite features are the fleet driving features. You can set maximum speeds, acceleration and decel rates and it gives you an audible tone if you exceed them. Why was this handy? When gas was $5.00 and I was trying to squeeze the maximum mileage out of my Grand Cherokee and the easiest way to do that is drive as gently as possible. It's especially funny when your wife borrows the truck and drives to NYC and can't figure out why the truck beeps at her when she exceeds 70mph (which was almost the whole drive) LOL. Of course she was none to happy with me when she called me after getting to NYC.
Anyone have code P0455 (EVAP emissions control system leak LARGE) come up?
My indy inspected it, said there aren't any leaks and all seems fine. I've cleared the check light a few times now, wondering if any of you guys are experiencing this issue?
