Leading evidence: 'Check with local authorities' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check with local authorities' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Does it require a computer change (chip, reprogram, etc.) now that the car is running on less back pressure?

one drag, and im sure youll all agree, is that my car is auto, so unless i drive in tip mode and shift myself, the gears change quickly and take away from the long winding sound of a gear.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally did my muffler bypass. Pretty straight forward. Pretty loud, which I dont mind, just not sure if I like the TYPE of sound the flat six makes. I've always been used to a V8 sound, which I love, so this is very different. Gonna give it some time and see how it grows on me. My pipes are from ebay, and one of the tips is a little crooked
Spun counter clockwise a little, which means I will need to visit a muffler shop and let them reweld and straighten that out.
the sound grows on you as your ears become increasingly less able to hear from the droning
personaly I dont like the by-pass pipes for street, sounds funny, but I get it and to each his own....
I love the sound on the street.
I was initially concerned with the sound level so I had a few friends drive behind me tooling around town. They all said the sound was "just right" for a Porsche, and they aren't the gung-ho type. Of course, full throttle is another story!

I have fister bypass mufflers which are part bypass, cat bypass pipes, and K&N intake. I only have drone for like 1000 rpms then it goes away. She likes to yell at other cars when I pass them. haha,
But since my 996 is only for going out looking for trouble, the sound is just right.
Could try some noise deadening blankets around the front of the rear wheel wells and maybe even some under the rear seat areas carpet. I imagine some of the noise is bouncing off the ground hitting the bottom foot wells as well. That' unless you are travelling faster than the speed of sound
Could one of you guys tell me what these pipes bypass and how they work? Do they bypass the cats and mufflers and then therefore these parts are removed? So you save the weight in the back end but they are much louder? Do you have to reprogram or put a new chip in the computer because the car is set up for the back pressure of cats and mufflers?
I put these on, they are 18 1/2lbs for the pair of them, so A LOT lighter than stock, and a little quieter and more of a refined sound than the bypass pipes, but still loud and aggressive. :-)
those are the fabspeed supercups? ↑
On the topic of exhaust, another possible combination I might try is cat bypass pipes and stock mufflers, I would just have to deal with the code, but it would probably still be moderatly loud for the $500 I paid. I need to research a way to fix the re occuring code from the cat sensors. There maybe a fix out there, im pretty sure they are not getting up to temperature.
The Fix for the Cat O2 sensors is a extension tube that brings them out of the exhaust stream...
FVD Brombacher has them.

Bump for my question a few posts up:
Can you guys give me a brief description of what "bypassing" does? Assume if you bypass mufflers you are louder, can remove them and save the weight?
Why would you bypass the cats? Same reason? Are both legal?
Do you have to re-chip or reprogram your ECU as the system is set up to run with back pressure? Any HP disadvantage? Thanks.
So you have a louder car with less weight in the back. I'm assuming that's the advantage.
Does it require a computer change (chip, reprogram, etc.) now that the car is running on less back pressure? Is it street legal?
It's legal depending on how you drive it. If you're going full throttle past a cop, he'd probably pull you for sound, but he'd probably pull you for other reasons too.
I've driven by cops many times, just around town or on the freeway, and no one's pulled me over so far.
Fabspeed claims that their muffler bypass pipes are emissions legal at least.
I had a cop follow me only once with no mufflers or bypass pipes on. It was very loud. He never pulled me over though. I don't think bypass pipes are loud. Maybe I've gotten used to them or my hearing is shot from working about jet engines.
Every state has different laws, check with local authorities. GA does not have any laws concerning modification of your car. However there are noise ordinances which would get you a ticket if you drive WOT. I think there maybe Federal laws against modifying emissions systems, ill have to google it. In which case its "dont ask dont tell" haha
i was running cat and muffler bypass pipes and it was very very loud,
i liked the sound a lot but after 2 days, i got pulled over by the police and got a warning,
at WOT, you could hear my car like 1 kilometer away, imagine
i decided to put back the stock mufflers but i kept my fabspeed catbypass, the sound is in between and is enjoyable
I would agree that bypass for both cat/muffler would be over the top & only really would be usefully with a properly tuned/built race car.
Myself, I still run the stock Cat's with the muffler bypass.
I did just that... but they were enjoying a coffee out onthe patio at Starbucks.... BOY did they look though!!
IMO these ONLY sound acceptable at WTO - every other rpm and in town cruising they sound like something is wrong with the car - makes starting in first EASY though cuz you can finally hear your motor - till ya go deaf
I have had enogh of these babies!! Putting my mufflers back on! They are starting to get to be too much for all the time, and drive my car alot. Also as stated, other than hard accel, I am not so crazy bout the sound either, especially with an auto.......and last but not least, my girl refuses to drive with me
could b a good thing!! I have decided to keep it a nice mildly quiet ride, my airbox is pretty wide open and sounds nice when I accel!
Anyway I have a few kwik Q's......I dont have my mufflers with me, or I would be able to figure this out, do the muffler pipe and cat pipe just match up, and NOT overlap as the bypass pipes do?....and where can I get that sleeve and proper 4 clamps? I looked at alot of P parts places, but found nothing like what I was looking for. Also it seems that reinstall would be easier with the brackets installed first then mufflers? I realize to reverse the 2 bolts and put them in from the bottom
Thanks!!!
I found the same... that around town I really did not enjoy the muffler bypass, When my son & I would go out a rip up the local hot spots... it was cool (my son would smile ear to ear)... If the car was not a track rat these days I would take them off & go with a muffler hack... A friend did the FisterD's this fall & I really thought they were a good alternative.
funny you mentionned to put the 2 bolts from the bottom cause thats what i did and it was much easier
also when i reinstalled, i put the bracket first in place then the muffler,
a second pair of hands is recommmanded to make the install easier
