No doubt, the iPod was a massive, transformational success and immensely more profitable than anything they'd done before, but it was the finale.
Leading evidence: 'finale' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'finale' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check spelling, k "sport?"' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Your facts are wrong (it was the original iMac that turned the business around, and PCs are cheaper because Microsoft opened up their operating system, immediately commoditizing hardware and turning Microsoft into a near-monopoly).

And I'll add that these two Wintel boxes have needed more IT support and more frequent replacement than everything else I'm running combined.

Personally, I've got a '62 Bug Cabriolet with a 2110 (and original glass rear window!) that I use for cruising locally.

Microsoft will be implicated also, for falsely claiming that different software was required to run on the two operating systems when, as revealed here today, the boxes and guts inside are just the same.

No, it's still not a coupe, but definitely feels more buttoned up with the hardtop on for the cold weather.
Which one is a better Porsche - the Cab or the coupe? Does the Cab work out to be a better investment? Is the extra care and feeding required for a Cab worth the problems? Performance wise the coupe wins hands down but what about the "big picture"?
Not sure; don't think any of these are a good investment... depreciating asset, but great fun.
Not sure what you mean with 'extra care and feeding'... don't believe I give it any extra care versus what the coupe guys do... as it relates to feeding... it eats pretty much everything... much better at the table than my 3 and 5 year old
The cab is a bit heavier, so you loose a couple of tenths of a second in the 0-60, etc. However, you do get the incredible pleasure of driving with the top down on a nice day... that is very hard to beat in my opinion! Both are great cars.
For me - Coupe. Why? Better chassis stiffness & performance including less overall problems. Historically speaking, cabs have had issues with leaking tops, fading material, etc. Unless you choose to get the hard top, my preference would be a coupe.
HOWEVER,
It is quite ok to disagree. That is why they make cabs. Each to their own...
C.
I like driving convertibles, but the problem with the 911 is that the coupe clearly looks better than the drop top, but then I can totally see how driving the cab is a more involved driving experience because you can hear everything so much better as you're all out there.
Tough call, man. I have a coupe, but would entertain the thoughts of a drop top 911 next time around. The critical thing here is that it must have a glass rear window. The plastic rear window is a major no.
Blonde or Brunette? Cabernet or Pinot? Windows or Mac?
There's no such thing as better, when it's all a matter of personal taste and what's important to you.
For some, the extra fractions of a second 0-60 are what it's all about, and the coupe is the best choice. Other's are willing to give up a few tenths for the sheer joy of driving on a summer's day, top down, wind in your hair (or in my case, wind where my hair used to be
).
There's only one person who can answer the question of what's right for you - you.
- Nick
Sorry I have to respectfully disagree Nick, but there is NO question that
MACs are superior.
..after all they can run all of those lousy Windows programs as well as their own...but I digress...the question "Big Picture" can not and will not be answered in this thread. This is an age old debate...there is no better (heck a cab came in second in the turbo shootout years ago)...to each his own.
I loved, Loved my drop. I sold it and have a coupe which I think looks better than cabrio, but man I miss that convertible when it is a beautiful day outside. My next 911, I'm going back to the drop top, just to mix it up again. Maybe a year or two.
Miss the smell of the water (live by a large lake) and the smoke from BBQ's and bonfires. Not the full effect with windows down and moon open.
so if macs are so superior, what does that get you ross? some sort of odd satisfaction that a hardware platform with miniscule market share makes u feel good with their smooth icons and gadgets for emailing and web posting and photoshopping of your very nice looking cab ride?
each has its own place in this very big world. just like boulder and santa monica.
First off, what in the world is up with that picture in your signature?
Is it meant to be a non sequitur to add further confusion to the Cab/Coupe debate?
What kind of aircraft?
Personally, I've got a '62 Bug Cabriolet with a 2110 (and original glass rear window!) that I use for cruising locally.
Although it's as quick as my 996 0-60, it's not optimal for high-speeds or very long distances.
You're in Germany, right?
The Coupes are probably much more popular (and expensive) there because of the weather and driving Autobahn speeds.
I'd also love a 996 Cab, but I chose the Coupe because (a) it's a more serious driver's car, (b) better security for a near daily driver, and (c) don't have to worry about top maintenance.
The prices must be higher there though, right?
I think a lot of Europeans (and Asians) are coming over and picking cars up, especially with the exchange rate.
I have both (911 coupe, Boxster vert).
The cab, won't really require much "extra feeding" but here are some things to consider.
- Noise, a cloth roof (even insulated) is noisier just driving down the street.
- Extra weight and chassis stiffness are factors to consider.
- Sun, on the right day convertables are hard to beat for sun and top down fun.
- Track, if you are planning on going the coupe is better there (safer/lighter)
- Looks, this really comes down to personal opinion
Nothing wrong with either choice. I'm personally not a huge fan of the convertable look on the 911, but many love 'em.
Buy what you like.....
I think the Coupe shows the classic lines better than the Cab, so I'm a Coupe guy when it comes to the 911. The "better" Porsche? Simple, it's the one you have.
The coupe is better. I don't like messed up hair. And while I still have a full head, I'm keeping it combed.
There is no big picture. It's just a car.
-td
And apparently a coupe.
Personally, I go for brunette (Well, OK, technically my wife has black hair, being of asian descent), a good Cabernet over a mediocre Pinot (but a good Pinot overall), Macs, and a Cabriolet to drive.
But that the whole point.. to each his own.. what works for you might not work for me, and vice-versa
- Nick
I don’t know. It’s a hard grape to grow. As you know. It’s thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. It’s not a survivor like Cabernet that can grow anywhere and thrive even when neglected. Pinot needs constant care and attention and in fact can only grow in specific little tucked-away corners of the world. And only the most patient and nurturing growers can do it really, can tap into Pinot’s most fragile, delicate qualities. Only when someone has taken the time to truly understand its potential can Pinot be coaxed into its fullest expression. And when that happens, its flavors are the most haunting and brilliant and subtle and thrilling and ancient on the planet.
Here's what superior means to me: My whole company runs on Macs. No viruses in twelve years. No lost data, ever. No machine down time. Three quarters of problems are user-serviceable. And work stations remain in service for an average of five years, with full software support. Thirty stations, and I have to share an IT guy with two other companies because I can't keep him busy.
That's money, baby.
Oh, and chicks dig 'em, too. If you're going to sit in Starbucks looking all poetic and serious staring into your laptop screen, it's gotta be a Mac.
Boulder and Santa Monica. You slay me. You're too good for a Dell.
Owned! Macs are for people who don't know how to use a computer...can't think for themselves...and want to spend WAY MORE money to buy a computer and use software that is spoon-fed to them....but god, they sure do LOOK pretty!
You're right. Finally someone gets it. I have used macs for almost 20 years and have had to put up with using it on a daily basis. I don't even think, because my stupid computer runs all day long and I never have the opportunity to get into the "why did it crash now" mode. I hate only having to think about my business and marketing. These macs are useless. I wouldn't use a mac except the entire industry is on them, and I really am pissed that in the past 10 years I have only put 7 figures in the bank, that is hardly worth spending an extra 500 bucks for. I should have put double that into the bank with a dell. Damn I hate macs. If only they hadn't come out with the i-pods and that stupid i-tunes, I could still be buying CD's with one great song on it and 9 bad songs. I could stand in front of the CD racks and wonder is the rest of this CD any good...you know, really think about it. I hate apple!
True,
Ponder this: What does that say about Mac's reliability when PC users have less uptime even though they have a greater knowledge of how computers work?
So does mine, actually. The networked accounting system my industry uses doesn't support Mac. Ironic in the extreme. (Apple's issue may be as simple as audit requirements).
And I'll add that these two Wintel boxes have needed more IT support and more frequent replacement than everything else I'm running combined.
It's still a Windows world.
Classic...great thread hijacking folks...sorry I couldn't reply benny, but you have been on my ignore list for at least a year now.
Funny I start up windows from time to time and every time I do I wonder what idiot wrote this operating system. The only crash I have had in the last 10 years is Windows running on my mac. Now back to the Porsche discussion...
Fair enough. But you have to laugh at the ironic parallel to the oil vs. water-cooling debate. Does it count as Porsche content if it's metaphorical?
I'll shut up now...
I have owned 3 coupes & now a drop top (cab). The newer the car, the less the top maintenance and the less difference there is between the handling/stiffness of the cab & coupe. My cab seems slightly quieter with the soft top up than with the hard top on. But the car is easier to wash in the winter with the hard top on.
The reasons to own a coupe:
- less epensive
- no top maintenance expenses
- you want to gut it and race it
- you live in an area where you expect people to cut a soft top and break into your car
- you will park it outside in a location that would be hard on any car, but especially on a soft top
- you live in an area where you don't have nice scenery or nice weather.
Reasons to buy a Cabriolet:
- used, it will often sell faster than a coupe
- it is a genuine pleasure on a nice day
- no sunroof maintenance or expenses
- you want to drive your car for pleasure, not just speed
- you have a garage and/or live in a nice neighborhood
- you want to have comparable performance to a coupe, but the additional pleasure of open air motoring.
I rode motorcycles for years. While the dynamics of riding a motorcycle are great, suiting up like SpaceMan Spiff takes a lot of enjoyment out. It's great to be out motoring without all the protective gear. Especially with the extending roll bars on the later cars, the chance that you will be in an accident where the difference in protection between a cab and a coupe actually matters--seems low.
Nothing like a ride in a cab on a nice day to put a smile on your face. While all cars are enjoyable at higher speeds, if you are driving slow through neighborhoods or out on back roads....cabs seem better.
Were I to buy another Porsche, my preference would be for another cab. Good driving technique will make you much faster than the tenth of a second or so that you'd lose with the extra 150lbs of weight. You'd probably find a few tenths difference across similar cars anyway--just error variance.
Drive what gives you a smile.
I like syrah the best.
As far as coupe or Cabriolet, I'd take the first hot buy I would run into, in my case it happened to be a coupe.
As far as blonds or burnets, same applies.
I married a blonde.
ROFL.. I have users like that.. I tempted to unplug their computer (Mac or PC) and give 'em a white board and some dry erase markers.. that's clearly the level of technology they're comfortable with.
- N
P.S. Sorry for the thread hijack.. that wasn't my intention - it was just to point out that some decisions are personal and what works for one doesn't work for another.
What does it say about Apple's priorities when the machine costs twice as much but uses the same components (laptop processors in a desktop?, integrated graphics?) as pretty much any cheap Wintel box around?
And those iMac ads that show how "nice and clean" it is without all the wires makes me want to scream "It's because you can't UPGRADE the GD thing because they want you to buy a brand NEW machine every time! ANYBODY can build a low-profile, all-in-one computer--it's called a laptop!"
1 - you all are huge nerds
2 - anytime i see any sort of serious business guy sittin in front of a mac... he looks like an overgrown kid i don't know why, but it's just the perception thing of it all and i used to have a mac and i think they're great for what they have to offer, but at the end of the day, i can do more with less $ on windows vista
3 - for those of you who have me on your ignore list and you let me know about it and you think i even remotely begin to care in the near vicinity of caring... well, most of you end up reading my **** anyways cuz curiousity is killing ya... all eyez on me.
I've grown to like the drop to 911. i can understand why someone would pick it over the coupe.
So much rage...
Not going to debate you on the facts, here, because you're bringing a knife to a gunfight on this subject. But I will say that it's the height of hypocrisy for a Porsche guy to be dissing Mac owners because their machines are too pretty, overpriced and can't be economically user-upgraded. Anybody can build a low-profile, all-in-one car. It's called a Toyota.
PC's/Macs - Toyota's to Porsches = a horrible analogy.
I'm a PC guy, I use macs but I can do a lot more with a PC. I have creative control with it. I can upgrade it, buy whatever parts I want from whatever vender. I can play SO many games as well as buy software that is open to be written for the PC.
When you buy a Mac, you buy whatever comes inside. You have NO choice. I've seen brand-new Macs come with video cards that are a year old, with NO choice to upgrade, yet you still pay SO much more. Mac people are monkeys, ney zombies. They have NO control over there own computers.
Time to upgrade a PC, just buy a new Video Card/Motherboard and install... Want to upgrade your Mac? Gotta buy a brand new one.. But boy, those Macs sure do look pretty!!! Mac's are greatest single marketed item. It's amazes me, people just eat 'em up!!
True about the games. But I don't play games. I'm all grown up.
As for the rest, believe what you like. I actually have to sign cheques for this stuff, and I can tell you hands down that our IT costs are lower and productivity is higher that it would be if I went WinTel. Simple numbers, not open to debate, at least not for my business. As for upgrades, I couldn't say. I've never had to. Even the transition to OSX a few years back only put two machines on the block. All the rest could run it, and many are still in service. I'm glad you're happy with your computer and that you can tinker with it and that it will do what you want it to do. Unfortunately, no WinTel machine can do what I need a computer to do.
But it just amazes me that people like you can find the energy to get so worked up about it. It's a freakin' appliance, dude. You want to argue about fridges and stoves next?
No, its called a Tata

P.S. This whole freakin' Mac vs. PC thing is silly in the extreme, and I'm *really* sorry I bought it up (my apologies to the OP). It's a freakin COMPUTER, for Pete's sake.. a piece of hardware with some software on top. Buy what you like, run what you like. Don't get your knickers in a twist 'cause someone else has different tastes.
Anybody want to start a Suze vs. Ubuntu vs Redhat war? How about gnome vs KDE? Emacs vs Vi?
P.P.S. Obligatory contribution to the OP's
actual
question.. one thing to think about is the removable hardtop on the Cabriolets helps in the winter.. No, it's still not a coupe, but definitely feels more buttoned up with the hardtop on for the cold weather.
WTF?! LOL!! A 180, huh?

People like me? Don't be a douche, Bruce, you're the one who had the energy to opine 1st. I'm just stating my opinion. Fact is, if you knew what you were doing, PC's are much cheaper to run and maintain, especially once out of warranty.
So now namecalling? Douche? You're a class act.
Tell you what: I'll keep running my business my way, which happens to be very profitably. I was also clear that PCs can't do what I need done anyway, so the discussion was silly and fun but ultimately moot. That was a statement of fact, which you're in no position to argue with because you don't actually know what I need a computer to do, now, do you?
The difference between my opinion and yours, as expressed here, is that I did not see the need to attack those who didn't share it. I didn't call Windows users names the way you did. I just declared my preference from my experience. This nuance has eluded you in the past, also, and likely always will. Pity. It really kills conversation when you can't get your point across without insulting people.
You've got an anger problem, sport. You should see somebody about that. Surely all this heartburn can't be over desktop computer operating systems.
The pic is of an open door helicopter sight seeing trip - open air association...
Don't remember the model of the helo...
My targa C6 Vette is unusable on the autobahn with the top off. I never see a 911 Cab with the top down on the autobahn - well once or twice (and they did not look comfortable).
Is the insurance much different for the Cab over the Coupe?
You are right about the exchange rate - US cars are being sold over here for a 20% profit after import and conversion.
There is an additional cost for shipping a Vert on a roll on roll of ship but I'm not sure how much it is.
Virtually no difference in insurance in my area. That might be different in New York City (but why would you want to own a car there??)
I haven't taken the cab to Autobaun speeds, but at 75-95mph in the U.S., it is surprisingly quiet with the top down (compared to some older English and Italian convertibles I've owned where the wind buffeting was substantial at 70mph.)
Coupe over cab for me.
FYI: In the not to distance future computers/machines will evolve and will be considered life forms and demand the same rights as human.
Okay I am going to give it to you ALL straight!!!
WE ARE ALL GOING TO TO DIE .......in the end...some sooner some later!!
That being said: Cabs look better than coupes (sorry Benjamin, but what the F do you know about style...looking at your avatar?!?)
Mac is as good or as bad as windows.....I had a mac crashing on me a couple of weeks ago (and I am talking about a G5 that had cost me 8,000 new!) and I had more than one HD crashing in my other G5's .....all because MAC uses the worst of the worst HD's ...Maxtor.
And to be honest I love both cabs and coupes.....just like to freeze my A of in socal in the winter with my top down! ANd Benjamin...you got a very nice c4s...so you must have some style.
I am trying to be nicer in 2008...does it show??
Not if you're the guy that paid $33k for a Porsche that cost the first owner $85k + $13k for the new engine. I wouldn't buy a Mac because of the price just like I wouldn't buy a brand new Porsche because of the price.
Buy what you want......These days all cars are taking a big hit, Will it really matter to you what i said when you realize you purchased the wrong car for the wrong reasons?Believe it or not it really is that simple to buy what YOU like, if you were to buy what I like it would be a TT coupe.
Getting back to the original question: Why not get a cab w/ the removable aluminum hardtop so you can have both? Granted, it doesn't look exactly like a coupe w/ the hardtop on, but life is full of compromises. I'll keep my hardtop on in the winter, and go topless in the summer!
I have a bridge to sell ya. I have the latest greatest G5 breathing fire, with tons of memory, loaded to the gills and it was under 3G's.
Did you spend the extra 5 grand on hookers?
Option 1 - I have a 2000 c4 for sale, I'll give it to you for $65,000. Deal?
OR
Option 2 - 2000 C4 with my Mac G5 and the bridge...for a package deal of $75,000 and I'll throw in a Ginsu knife.
sorry.
Um, in the computer business, the biggest volume pricing benefits accrue at the component level, not the assembly level. Ask Michael Dell. Given the facts of standardization and immensely greater production numbers for things like processors, and you're going to be able to build cheaper whether you're Dell or some guy tinkering in his basement, taking breaks from knitting his own underpants.
Bruce, you kill me. I'm not sure where you come up with this stuff.
Apple can get the hardware at the same price as the local guy buying the same parts (processor, vid card, hard drives, memory ect...). Matter of fact, apple can get the parts cheaper than the local guy (knitting his underwear)
It's the fact that everything they sell is proprietary so they can charge whatever they want, and they will, as long as the suckers keep lapping it up.
Apple is a complete monopoly, as they control ALL the software that goes on their machine and ALL the hardware that goes IN their machine.
Gotta run, have heartburn, gonna KICK the dog!
You know, it's funny: That's the same argument people used in the late 80s and early 90s when predicting Apple's imminent downfall.
Anyway, the world will be shocked to learn the news you've shared here today, that Macs are just the same as PCs inside. You'll get on 60 Minutes and be famous, but sadly, billions in market cap will be destroyed as their share price plummets and they get called to account for their fraudulent practices. Microsoft will be implicated also, for falsely claiming that different software was required to run on the two operating systems when, as revealed here today, the boxes and guts inside are just the same. Weeping children will fill the streets, their iPods now silent. Inevitably, an economic depression will follow, this being the last straw in investor confidence, broken by your shocking revelation. People will hurl themselves from windows. Porsche resale values will plummet. And this forum will be flooded with agricultural laborers and convenience store clerks wanting to learn all about their new-to-them GT3s.
I hope you're happy.
[QUOTE=washington dc porsche;4969814]
WTF?! LOL!! A 180, huh?
Yea, I guess I've switched up my game here a bit.
I saw an aerokitted, lowered on 19s narrowbody carrera in person recently and it did look damn good. I still maintain that coupes look better, but i can see now how the drop top experience would must make it more of a thrill to drive than a coupe.
Fact of the matter is....
PC's are cheaper because of competition with all of the PC manufacturers out there, not to mention the mom and pops that can build and sell computers to spec. You can build a PC for about $350 right now, forget about Microsoft, you can run linux and any piece of software you need, for free (open source). Try that with Apple!! The PC market is epidemy of how an open-market should be.
Apple, on the other went from 7$ a share to about $200. Why you ask? Well it would not have been possible without a pretty and well-marketed product called the IPOD (this product saved Apple from certain bankruptcy. Through this product and superior marketing they have seen the sales of their computers skyrocket. Apple has created a whole new generation of mindless zombies.
People who buy apple perceive themselves to be getting a superior product, when all they are getting is a trendy machine that they think is pretty but ultimately inferior in so many ways... not to mention, grossly overpriced!
If there were other companies that could build and sell Apples, with whatever software, Apples prices would be sliced in half. You're completely wrong that Apple's cost more because the pay more for their parts
Your facts are wrong (it was the original iMac that turned the business around, and PCs are cheaper because Microsoft opened up their operating system, immediately commoditizing hardware and turning Microsoft into a near-monopoly). Your missive is full of insults and name calling (zombies?!). Your spelling is incorrect (the word you were looking for is 'epitome'). Other companies did try to build Macs in a too-little, too-late experiment in licensing their operating system (You may recall Microsoft being brought up on anti-trust charges, and making a token investment in Apple?) And you haven't offered a single piece of evidence to support your case, nor have you shown any interest in why I - who have no issues with Windows machines or the people who use them - prefer a Mac for my needs.
Altogether, I think you've made yourself look like a fool, here.
I'll just move on so these people can have their thread back. And I repeat my suggestion that you get some help with your anger issues. Anybody who can get so humourlessly worked up about a product nobody is forcing them to buy is headed for a heart attack.
I went through the same desicion process before I had my first cab, now I would not want a hard top. I have my top down even when its 40 something degrees and just turn the heat on. When I have the top up, it feels too closed in. I have no regrets in owning a cab. Closest thing next to a motorcycle my wife would let me have......
I like that you both have a passion for slinging words on the internet + stubborn about it.
I'm no expert, but...
iMac? Macintosh computer/server penetration/growth/share is pretty flat and has been for quite a while now. It is the iPOD that catapaulted them to where they are at today. Yet still their hardware sales are flat.
This is coming from a guy who likes Windows Vista and OSX.
Of course the IPOD is what saved them, no one in their "right mind" would deny this.
Anyway, Brucey seems to take this so seriously. Fact is, we all love a good debate, but calling Mac-owners Zombies is hardly personal name calling. Just my "general" opinion of them. Anyhow, once someone starts spell checking me and thinking I have anger problems, all I can do is laff-out-loud and wonder @ the person behind the other keyboard.
Anyway, I wish him no ill-will, just havin' a good, clean, fun, lively, OFF-TOPIC debate with my boy Bruce!
Nah, Bruce is cool, but fun to mess with. I always like to read what he writes though.
Matter-of-fact, I think i'm pretty much cool with everyone on Rennlist...well except Ben, but that's just cause he's the board villain who's fun to "hate."
Bruce, check my spelling, k "sport?"
Ah, another McRib lover....
I'm in a McRib network, and we notify each other on any McRib-rumors.
(With apologies to Mr. OP.)
Here's some Mac trivia:
I put my Windows taskbar on top (where it should be).
I'll take Ben's strong opinions most of the time over the "pat me on the head everyday, I'm a porsche guru" types. But, it is a little micro view of the world, isn't it. I like everyones input, because sometimes you need a strong opinion on cool wheel fitments and other times on proper set-up for the track.
I like to stir the pot sometimes, but it is in good jest only...hope everyone gets my very dry sarcasm.
Still coupe, but my next is a Cab. And I'll also have a Cab tonight for dinner.
Yeah, I think Ben is more willing than a lot of people to say what really needs to be said sometimes. In my short time here, I've noticed how "dangerous" it can be to veer off from the herd, and that kinda sucks, because I like to hear everyone's ideas, even if they're wrong.
Not the current iMac, my friend. The original one. History lesson: Jobs is banished by Sculley and the board in 1985. Sculley and his successor make some bad bets in the years following. Apple is nearly bankrupt, shares almost worthless. Desparate, the board asks Jobs to return in an episode worthy of Greek mythology, and he shortly after launches the candy apple iMac. The emphasis on physical design restages the Apple brand and gets it widely noticed, but also sets the stage for Jobs' internal product vision, called by Apple folks the 'digital hub' concept. The iMac makes money, and buys them time to make it happen. No doubt, the iPod was a massive, transformational success and immensely more profitable than anything they'd done before, but it was the finale. The real turnaround from the brink began with that funny, toy-like transparent desktop computer in 1998. That's what I was actually referring to.
Just because I don't want you to think I'm a total moron.
Two things I really like about Benjamin Choi: He's real. And if you look back at his very first post, here, you'll see that he warned us fair and square that he was going to be blunt and opinionated. It's almost never personal. I can put up with that all day long.
Hey pls stop guys. you keep this up i'm actually going to have to continue to remain steadfast in my candid ways and tell you guys i consider some of you guys cool enough to make me want to buy a round of chilled Goose to one shot in the name of the highly exclusive, but chill choi fraternal order.
Here's my 1.5 cents (on sale today only).
I drove all the 996s (except the GT's), the Boxsters and a few BMWs and an Audi. I couldn't decide whether I would go for a coupe or a convertible. I drove all the convertibles, the Cab, the M3 convertible and the BoxsterS. Then I drove all the coupes, the M3,M5, S4, and wet sump 911's C2,C4/C4S...I later drove a TT but insurance here in NJ and gas consumption convinced me to wait on the dry sump Pcar. I still think this is the best value though especially now that a TT can be had below $60K.
The M3 was just plain diluted and felt like a wet noodle in drop top form and the 911 Cab's front end lift in a strong highway cross wind really put me off. Someone remarked that the Cab looks like a bath tub with a big butt. I got his point, it seems if you go for a cab you are missing out on the styling of one of the best 911 coupe designs of all time. So for rag tops, this left me with the BoxsterS which for me felt like slot car, very tight, neutral handling. Drop in the GT3 seats and Goodyear F1's on 20 pound Carrera wheels and its perfect.
As for the coupes I decided a C4S would be the best option for year round driving here in NJ but I really thought the CarreraS had the better feel, less understeer but not as nice looking as the C4S. I probably will go the C4S route as my year round car and drive the BoxsterS only in summer.
But I am still on the fence for a AWD fun...C4S or TT...if only that GT1 block was in the C4S it would be a done deal. Two Porsches for less than $70K is amazing.
p.s.
I will never buy a 997 anything.
Don't take it personally. Done. If I like your car and things you do to it I'll share it with you just as freely as if I feel some of your car decisions are totally silly.
That's quite a stretch, especially considering the reliability of the average sunroof--I wouldn't even have the slightest idea HOW to "maintain" my sunroof--versus the average reliability of say, motorized convertible tops.
