My 1999 car recently had this done using a different approach which retains as much of the original car's equipment as possible (DME, harnesses, etc.)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can a '99 996 take a 3.6 L motor? Plug and play without any modifications? Or am I limited to the 3.4? Is the 3.6 more reliable than the 3.4?

POST 2Original post

You would need a DME for 3.6 since that engine has VarioCam Plus (DME 7.8). You would also need to make some changes in the fuel system since your car does not have the returnless fuel system of the 3.6. Not to difficult but not really plug 'n play.

I posted this link in another thread were you asked the question. Paul 996 recently replaced a 3.4 engine with a 3.6 engine, so his thread my help answer your questions. Replaced a 3.4 engine with a 3.6 engine

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, guys. Oh you have no idea how much I hate this. OK! About 5-6 years ago when 996 engines were launching left and right, the argument was made that the 993's 3.6 was far more durable for whatever reason. This 3.6 water cooled we're talking about is NOT the same 3.6 aircooled as far as the innards go, correct? Or is it?

POST 5Original post

Whiz.. Loren is spot on. The way he describes is one of the more "factory like" methods of how to put a newer 3.6L into the earlier 3.4L based 996s. My 1999 car recently had this done using a different approach which retains as much of the original car's equipment as possible (DME, harnesses, etc.) Loren's way requires updating the car with newer components to match the newer engine... ECU, Dash, fuel system, new harness. A lot more surgery but a lot more "stock". FWIW: you can also upgrade your car to a 3.8L from the 997S... The shop that did my car has done a few of those in Boxsters. Lastly: the 3.6 of the 993 and 964 era are not the same as the newer 3.6 of the 996 and 997 era. The 996 3.6 is just an upgraded 3.4 with lots of updates of things that porsche found to have gone wrong.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

More head banging. I need to get this monkey off my back. Can you all please hook me up with some info source on how much a 996 without a motor can sell for? Looking at options here; put replacement motor and sell at submarket value, or sell car sans motor. Either way, I am getting rid of this one. Thanks, everyone, again for your input.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh BTW, the car has an aerokit from Carnewal without the rear wing, ROW suspension, no wrecks. Panels in very good shape, need maybe a 2-300 dollar job at Dent Wizard and it'll be good for near concours. Road chips from the dang DE's at CMP (like sand blasting). I'm melting.........

POST 8Original post

Whiz.. Plan on spending 11-14k at a dealer for a remanufactured 3.4 from porsche with a 2yr warranty. This really vaires based on your local labor rate and if your 3.4 is considered acceptable as a core towards your new 3.4. PM me if you any questions. I also believe that there is another active thread on 996 value's with blown engine. IMHO, it is not in your interest to consider upgrading to a 3.6/3.8 unless you plan to keep the car for a while and make it something special. Otherwise just have a 3.4 put in or sell it and eat the loss. I went through all these choices myself already. best of luck to ya. -Paul
