I'll have the alignment checked when I replace the rear and add some camber to try to keep the wear more uniform from inside/outside of the tread.

When I was last at Wheel Enhancement in LA getting my tires replaced, I noticed the same with increased wear on the passenger side vs the driver's in the rear.

I just replaced my PZeros (that looked very similar to those pictured) with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S.
Replace tires almost immediately and i've been very pleased

Since I purchased this car, I replaced the tires almost immediately and I've been very pleased with the reduction in noise on the PS Ribs vs.

Unfortunately, I'll have to replace these before the PCA Driver's Ed in a few weeks, so I can testify that I'll probably blow through the next set pretty darn quick.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just for fun... How many miles would you guess are on these tires? No track time.
Michelin Pilot Sport Rib - 2 x Rears, 285/30-18
Wear bars are exposed on the passenger side of the right, and almost exposed on the left.... Turn left much - what am I, a NASCAR driver?
I may be wrong, but I don't think those tires are directional, which means you can roate them LxR. Too late for this set, but you can extend the life with of next set if you rotate - or quit turning left so much.
When I was last at Wheel Enhancement in LA getting my tires replaced, I noticed the same with increased wear on the passenger side vs the driver's in the rear. The service guy mentioned that it was normal, something about that side engaging first from the drivetrain, or something to that effect. Not sure if that makes sense to those more mechanically inclined than myself, but I felt he definitely knew and saw a lot more of this than I did.
LOL, I should have read the first post before I voted. I thought you were asking how many miles I had on my rears. My Contis are over 17K and I'm guessing those Mich. are less than 5K.
I have Michelin PS2 295/30/18 with 18k miles and they have just about the same thread left.
Talk about scary driving home in the rain from Memphis; fortunately it only rained hard for 45 minutes.
Okay - not that anyone REALLY cares, but I thought this might be interesting to some members here. Since I purchased this car, I replaced the tires almost immediately and I've been very pleased with the reduction in noise on the PS Ribs vs. the old Contis. I've found these to be relatively quiet, supple, and they haven't had much of a chance to squeal - even though I've tried... I can't really find any faults except that they're ready to be replaced in less than 5k miles (or sooner).
I've driven less than 4k miles on these tires when pics were taken. I've been driving about 80% on twisty mountain roads in Western NC. The roads here are generally pothole-free and wonderful, but I also understand that the type of pavement on several of the local roads, including the Blue Ridge Pkwy, really chew up tires. And yep, I can confirm that a combination of the roads, and my driving style has chewed these tires up, but good. I'll have the alignment checked when I replace the rear and add some camber to try to keep the wear more uniform from inside/outside of the tread. Unfortunately, I'll have to replace these before the PCA Driver's Ed in a few weeks, so I can testify that I'll probably blow through the next set pretty darn quick.
On the plus side, I consider going through tires a badge of honor - albeit an expensive one in this case. In the future, I would consider Sumitomo's perhaps - and maybe even the new Michelin PS All-Seasons. YES, I know that A/S tires are usually crap, but I've spoken with a Michelin rep who explained that they're putting more R&D into their A/S tires than most, and that the performance can be quite surprisingly on par with some of the Summer tires. Also, the treadwear rating on the A/S's is 500 vs. 220 for the PS Ribs (and most other Summer tires). I ran a set on one of my past cars, and the A/S's were actually okay - you won't get "max" performance, but then again...
Hope this wasn't too mundane! Certainly interested in hearing tire/wear experience and recommendations.
Cheers,
Doug
I think going through tires is a good thing. It means you: a) use good quality, sticky tires; and b) you don't drive it like a granny (all grannies on the forum - no offense meant).
I used to work with some guys that were cheap AND had poor taste in cars. I remember one time, a fellow we'll call Frank, was upset that his "guaranteed for 80k mile" tires only lasted 65k miles. He took the tires back and made such a stink, they gave him money back for the prorated 15k miles he didn't get! Frank was telling the story to another guy, then he turned to me and said, "Van, you're a car guy, how long should tires last?" I made their jaws drop when I said, "I only get 5000 miles out of mine."
Hi Doug,
I guessed correctly.....less that 4500 miles. I live in Raleigh, have a 996 TT X50 along with some other cars and like the car alot. What I do not like it is tire wear and performance of the Michelin PS 315 25 l9s in other than dry conditions. Less than 5000 miles on a 500 buck tire is an absolute joke. And if that isn't funny I was caught in a deluge on a freeway that I couldn't get off and thought I was on a roller skate.
So let's see. What do we have here. $500 a tire, less that 5000 miles and hydroplane city. What's wrong with this picture? (and please before someone comes up with an inuendo or direct comment about being able to afford them, I also race a cup car and have a Daytona Ferrari, this isn't about money, it is about value) Michelin needs to make a better product. This is over the top.

Mine were looking like that at about 8-10 k. Both tires were worn with the inside smooth. If I am going to replace the tires so often I normally get inexpensive tires. So far I have been happy with Nexen's and BFG tires. I had an alignment done at a shop in Norman OK and my tires are doing much better. I autocross about once a month and did not notice a difference in my times. Each track is different each month so there is not an easy way to compare other than the buttometer.
I had the same experience with the Pirelli PZeros. Last time I put on Sumitomos and now after about 17k miles I just ordered another set for the rear. I usually figure that I will go through two pairs on the rear for every pair on the front. However the fronts still look so good and the tread is so deep, it makes me wonder if the fronts could actually make it through three sets of rears. I doubt I will push it, because the front are so much more important, but I still bet they would be mostly OK.
My experience with the Sumitomos has been very good... for a daily street tire. I still hold by my initial impressions. Probably 95% of the performance of the PZeros, slightly softer sidewalls (so slightly less precise handling), but last 2-3 times longer than the PZeros and cost about half as much. IMO, a great trade-off to make on a daily driver. They wouldn't be my choice as a track tire, but are otherwise very recommended.
I just replaced my PZeros (that looked very similar to those pictured) with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. I have not seen any decrease in handling, but I have noticed a better and quieter ride and they are much better in the wet. The A/S are cheaper too!
