I'm 62" and with the Windshott installed (Cabriolet) it is a problem to get the seat all the way back because the seat collides with it.

What concerned me is that my legs were extremely close to the steering wheel, but because of my knee I couldn't test drive it to see if it was a problem.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First my background: Had a 944 a while ago and loved it! I fit in it like a glove and that's not common for me because I'm 6'4".
Got the urge to get back into Porsche's, so started looking and decide that I really like the 996. Found a local car to check out at a dealer and went there yesterday "just to sit in it". (I can't drive manual right now due to recent left knee surgery) I was somewhat surprised to find out that the steering wheel didn't tilt, just telescope! What concerned me is that my legs were extremely close to the steering wheel, but because of my knee I couldn't test drive it to see if it was a problem. (I did have the salesman take me out to get a feel for it. Nice. Very nice for a '99)
Is this a problem for any of you taller owners?
Thanks.

ps This is a great site & forum. Nice to see a forum that has spellcheck!!!
I'm 6'2" and find that if I drop the seat back a notch further, lower it all the way, and then pull the wheel all the way out, it clears my legs more easily - due to the angle the wheel column exits the dash.
Also - you may find that a non-powered seat sits lower in the car, and offers you more clearance and legroom.
Chris.
6'2" also. I really only have trouble getting in and out of the car. I kind of have to position my leg in the right way to sit down. Once I'm in the car the steering wheel is close to my legs but not touching. It takes some getting used to and practice but once your seated it's rather comfortable.
I push the steering wheel all the way toward the dash, seems to work best for me.
I'm 6 2 maybe 6 3 and I do find that I have to put the seat all the way down and all the way back, then pull out the steering column all the way, and it's ok, though even then I do wish the wheel could go a bit higher.
At 6'1", I have the steering wheel all the way out, the seat down, and my knees up under the steering wheel. With the seat far enough back for my legs to easily clear the wheel, I can't reach the steering wheel effectively without my head in the roof.
I'm almost 6'5" with LONG legs (compared to my torso) and I too have my seat all the way back and all the way down.
My steering wheel is all the way in and I have no clearance problems.
The steering wheel is close to my legs, but never touches.

I'm 6 foot 5, no issues AT ALL. I've tried every sports car to see if I fit, nothing comes close to a 911. I have the cab, though that shouldn't affect anything.
My steering wheel gives me plenty of clearance, I've never had an issue getting in or out of the car.
A for a Vette (as mentioned above), my head hits the top brace on the roof when I sit in it, no matter how low I put my seat. Very dangerous (and uncomfortable).
You may not want the sports seats, though. My buddy has them, and when I sit in them my shoulders sit too high. Other than that, the best sporst car for the vertically inclined...
Ordering new you can delete the sunroof and my experience has been that power seating gives you more range. With manual seats "forward" is also "high", elevated, and the seat lowers as you move it backward, not always the optimum solution.
I will not drive nor own a car in which I must recline the seat in order to have headroom.
6'2"
I'm 62" and with the Windshott installed (Cabriolet) it is a problem to get the seat all the way back because the seat collides with it.
So I don't think a Cab is an option for you
6'6" - at first, I had the seat tilted back so the bottom cushion was up, and I could barely get in and out of the car. Now that I lowered the seat, no problems, once I'm in.
Getting in and out, though, I look like an idiot.
Sunroof delete is not available on the 997. I'm almost 6'5" and I fit fine in my car. I agree the power seats (std.) offer more headroom than the non-power seats.
I would also agree no other sports car that I've sat in comes close to the headroom afforded by a 911.
Well, I know in my case I'm not moving my seat all the way down because I'm short on headroom, but simply because the steering wheel isn't high enough. I also want to add on the vette I simply can't drive them...well I could if I needed to, but I would never willingly do so. Even as a passenger (where I can move my seat without concern for steering and pedals) I'm short on headroom in a vette.
6'4"
I have the wheel pulled out all the way, the seat down but with the front of the seat angled up a little and the seat about an inch forward from the rearmost position so I can tilt the backrest a little more without losing a good grip on the wheel. That works fine for the street. On the track, I take the seat another inch or two forwards and tilt the cushion and backrest a bit more to give some more clearance for my helmet.
Thanks guys! I think I'd be okay in a 996. Tilt would be nice, but my budget won't allow for a 997.
If you want to read more about the car I tried on, check out my "Scratched paint" thread:

I think I'll pass on this particular car and keep looking.
Thanks again.
