The thing that really attracted me to the Turbo, well, besides the power, options, road presence, performance, looks, did I mention power (?), was the fact it used a much more reliable power plant.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, pretty much what the title says... I tried to read some of the past posts similar, but was looking for some fresh feedback. I'm looking at getting an X-50 '03-'04 996 TT or an '06 - '07 997 C2S. I'm thinking the HP difference will just be too much for me to give up... and am leaning heavily towards the 996 X50 cars... but is the 997 Chassis and Interior 'That' Much better? Thanks for your objective feedback. Dave

POST 3Original post

+1. There is not too much difference between a 996 (non TT) and 997 C2S IMHO, but there is a major difference in 996/997 to a 996TT. The engine is substantially different (obviously the HP, but even the design) and more reliable.

POST 4Original post

Me I'd prefer the turbo....some what. Turbo's are good for long hwy's. The windy roads have better handling/speed with a naturally aspirated engine. With out the turbo things are manageable for top performance. Turbo....well great for nailing the gas for killer passing power. I'd rather have a turbo but really prefer a maxed out natural engine. I'd love to have Suzuki Motorcycles and Yoshimura redo my engine and suspesion then walk away with a killer like my bike. 1st gear goes to 100mph at 14,000rpm. No turbo, just lightened and balanced. I wouldn't pass a deal on a turbo if you get one. Power is cool. Talk to some track guys if you want a hot car for racing. This is only my opinion.

POST 5Original post

You can do as much with the 996 susepension as the 997s so follow your instincts and go for the HP. They're pretty incredible cars when correctly tuned and setup. The owner of Speed Gallery here in Studio City has a stunning 700 HP 996 TT that you should look at if you're local to So Cal. The power is addicitive....

I test drove a 997 C2S before I test drove and bought an 03 996 Turbo. The 997 is a nice car, but the Turbo suited my needs better. I require a GT like car for my habit of taking long road trips and I know a powerful car though with a tractable engine (I hate peaky, revvy engines on the open road or on any other road for that matter) is a peach to drive and I can and have covered big distances in several times now. More trips are planned next year. However, I do use the Turbo as a daily driver, commuting 30 miles (one way) to work in it at least one day a week and sometimes several. And there are the weekends that require I take the Turbo out for some exercise. Based on my brief time in the 997 I didn't see any big advantages vis a vis the interior over the Turbo. The 997 was a good car, adequate performance and had the very nice Turbo not been available and I not been able to find one elsewhere (I had several lined up to consider) I could have ended up with the 997 and been very happy with it. However, I might have opted to go to a newer (09 or even 10) Cayman S. DFI engine. PDK. The thing that really attracted me to the Turbo, well, besides the power, options, road presence, performance, looks, did I mention power (?), was the fact it used a much more reliable power plant. Test drive both cars. Make up your own mind. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys! I did happen to do just that today, and drove both... however the '03 TT I drove had Bilstein Coil Overs on it... (I didn't know at the time) so I'm going to go drive another to make sure the 'ride' is still comparable. I am leaning (heavily) to the 996TT (Love power!) but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Especially... leaning towards finding an X50 car. Thanks, Dave

I think it's also important to ask "what do you plan on using the car for?" daily driver weekend toy track toy something to polish in the garage learning to drive a performance car ect.....

Good Input... Daily Driver - YES Weekend Toy - YES Track Toy - Not really... I have 2 dedicated race cars for this. Something to polish in the garage - Sure... I definitely like my cars always looking good Learning to drive a performance car - While I think I'm a pretty good driver with something like 9 National Championships over the past 12 years or so... I've never driven a rear engine porsche on a daily basis... so I'm sure I'll have a lot to learn there too! Thanks for all the feedback! Dave

POST 10Original post

I really like your attitude towards being a "good driver"!!! It's amazing how many dont get that.. I told my instructor last time we had lunch that I after 13 track days I went from being a "really great driver" to being a "really fair beginner" He told me I was better than that, but knew what I was talking about..... My vote goes to the TT though I have not driven a TT YET !!

POST 12Original post

No doubt, the TT is the pick, HP is the deciding factor; however, another point to consider is the RWD vs AWD and the engine sound. The TT is much more muted, even you if you add an aftermarket exhaust, the nature of forced induction. The 997S with PSE or aftermarket exhaust has a more satisfying sound. In addition, you may find that the AWD does not allow you to have as much fun by sliding the car around. I own both versions and I can tell you that I will never purchase an AWD version of the 911 for the above mentioned points.

POST 13Original post

I agree the AWD is a big turn off for me too.... I wish they made a wide body C2... love that big a$$

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7175267

Russo, great points! And I too am not an awd fan! I love rwd, and do a smooth drift onto the freeway on ramps at least weekly! I am afraid I could miss that! But I was also hoping a chip/tune get the car in low 500hp range, and hopefully an occasional drift here and there may be possible! I don't know how over the top this may be, coming from a guy new to the porsche camp, but I did see somewhere someone mention converting from awd to rwd isn't that difficult???

POST 15Original post

It's much more difficult to drift the TT, even with 500 hp. If you currently enjoy getting the car to drift, you will be sorely disappointed with the TT. In my case, I know I will never buy another AWD car, period. Have you looked into a GT3? now that is a driver's car and you can use it as a DD. Prices for the 996 GT3 are very attractive and this car is a much different type of animal, a true enthusiast's car.

I agree, I'm a big fan of GT3 (as well as GT2)... however... I occasionaly will take a child or two to school... and so I'd need the back seat! Thus why I'm figuring 996TT

POST 17Original post

Just get the 996TT & remove the front diff. That's what I'd do.

POST 18Original post

The child factor seals the deal. The TT is the more appropriate choice. Good luck.

POST 19Original post

You'll be happy with either, TT more likely to make you really happy drive a couple of each and you'll know if the turbo's for you
