Most dealers check the paint on cars being traded in and it can make a huge difference in what they offer.

I've taken the car around to a few shops and there appears to be some difference of opinion about wheather to replace or repair the front bumper.

Funny thing is, the most expensive estimate I got was over $1200 *less* than what the other party is claiming they need to repair their 11 year old pickup truck...

At least get the "replace" money if going through insurance.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
As some of you may have read, I had a fender-bender recently with very minor (stress cracks and deformation) front bumper damage. I've taken the car around to a few shops and there appears to be some difference of opinion about wheather to replace or repair the front bumper.
What's the wisdom of rennlist? My car's a keeper so I'm not too worried about resale value but what's the best route to go, fix or replace? And why?
Thanks.
Got a pic of damage? If it's twisted and cracked, I'd change it. If cracks are minor and can be filled, it should be okay. If it's deformed, I'd take it off to make sure it can be reshaped before putting it back on.
Without seeing, it's hard to say.
Like Eli K said, it's probably best to get an aero one if insurance can pay for part of it.
I'd replace the bumper. Its an easy part to change out and the repainting if done by some real good shop that knows how to do it right...you'll be good as new...replace!
There are some hairline stress cracks and it looks like the brace that the bumper attaches to has pushed through two small wholes, sort of like "nail-pops" you'll get in your sheetrock walls.
I'll get some pics later today.
Funny thing is, the most expensive estimate I got was over $1200 *less* than what the other party is claiming they need to repair their 11 year old pickup truck... Chalk one up for Porsche!
Okay, I've got a pic but when I try to upload it, I get an error saying the file size is too large. Are all the pics posted here only 149KB? I can't believe that. What am I doing wrong? My pic is 1.3MB.
Always replace when possible. Even though you don't plan to sell the car, a dealer will really knock you on the price ir they detect that the car has been painted. Most dealers check the paint on cars being traded in and it can make a huge difference in what they offer. Of course they will usually ask if the car was ever in an accident and will get you that way.
Realistically though, a good body shop can do a job that no one will ever be able to detect with the naked eye. New parts just make the painting much easier.
