Leading evidence: 'Clean tb, put new plugs' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check lines tomorrow' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

i guess it could be a vacuum leak , will check all the lines tomorrow.

Are you seriously recommending a home wheel alignment for a C4S?

The a/c changing its load can cause the idle to change.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i picked an 02 C4s few months ago and have some issues i have been trying to address and need some help:
1-my idle sits just above 600 rpms, sometimes it hunts towards 800 but falls back again. i cleaned the TB, put new plugs... and have no cels or pending ones.any idea where else i could look? the car runs great and never hesitates.
2- my shifter is kind of loose, looked up the cables under the center console but everything looked ok.. any input on how the cables are adjusted?
3- the radio is driving me nuts, i cant figure out how to save the stations!!
4-i think i could use an alignment, can any shop do it?
thanks in advance
Beautiful car.
The radio: Each key (1 to 8) will store 3 stations. Tune to desired station, and then press the key to get to memory level (1 to 3). Then hold the key until frequency is displayed.
The alignment: Find someone with a Hunter 4-Wheel Alignment (or similar) machine. Not everyone can do this, but everyone will claim they can. You want to be within 1/10 of a degree per spec.
beautiful car !!
did you read the manual yet?
To save radio, puch and HOLD the button.... it will save it
Any shop with a good tech can do the alignment. In my area there are many exotics that go to discount tire. There is a guy there that everyone swears by... that said I go to a specialist because I like him and trust him. if you search Tirerack for tire dealers in your area, they would be a good starting point OR ask locals where they go.
need more info on the loose shift? is the handle loose or is there a lot of plat in the throw?
I dont know how to raise your idle
Thanks for the pics
Super color that really pops on your C4S! Today after my engine warmed up, my tach reading at idle was a tick under 800 RPMs, but usually it idles around 650-700 RPMs.
1..... hmmmm, maybe an intake/vac leak after the maf. Also Try cleaning the maf.
2. if this is a a SSK knock off... then its normal.
3. Hmmmmm, hold the button down like 10 secs?
4. Go to an indie with Porsche knowledge.
Nice P-car! Welcome!
Just buying my porsche at the begining of the month I'm uncertain but.....
Wondering idle can be due to the battery having a load applied or the car wanting to maintain the charge. The a/c changing its load can cause the idle to change. I have also had a fuel pump in it's last days go for a year causing unknow reasons for high and low idles with even conk outs till one day before convincing me to buy a porsche it just gave up the ghost. Just ride with the symptoms keeping track of what is going on. This technique is hard with the music playing since you'll miss 99% of what the engine is doing in idle speed. Maybe try running the car then load it up with lighter, lights, a/c and such to see if it pops the idle up to 800. The a/c might even cause the idle to drop if it drags the motor down. I do know synthetic oils give higher idles since they are way slicker. Possibly the car was tuned with synthetic then changed. Idles will change over time and some times a week or two after tuning so adjust it.
Nice car. Nice color. (I had a CS in that speed/signal yellow!)
Idle hunting is one sign of a bad or going bad AOS. Was TB "dirty"? Oily? If so...
Also, check that oil filler tube cap on tight and not leaking. They can develop a leak.
Shifter may be worn a bit. Have no idea of how cables can be adjusted to tighten this up. May not be a cable thing either but a bushing thing or something else.
Radio? Who the H*ll listens to a radio driving one of these things? (Seriously, RTM!).
Alignment unless recently done and you have paperwork for it, probably needs doing. Good "investment" to have it done to save wear/tear on tires.
I prefer the dealership service department align my Porsches. In my area I would only trust one indy shop. If you can get some recommendations as to a good indy alignment shop in your area then use the shop. Or if a local dealership comes in for good word of mouth for alignments... Use the dealer. Sometimes they'll give a discount on alignment in order to attract you and keep you as a repeat customer. Ask.
I would not just take the car to any shop for alignment. The shop might just set the "toe" and call it done. Or worse. I've seen some real sloppy alignments from various discount tire/brake/alignment shops. Never again. I stay the heck away from them.
Sincerely,
Macster.
For the alignment, there is an even better option:

Repeatable, verifyable and above all: CHEAPER.

Are you seriously recommending a home wheel alignment for a C4S? A good alignment from a specialty shop is only ~$100. This advice seems a false economy of the worst kind, considering the cost of a proper set of tires.
thanks for the replies, i did clean the TB and there was some dirt behind the door, although not much
my idle is actually quite smooth, it only hunts after a hard drive for few seconds like it wants to go up to 800... i guess it could be a vacuum leak , will check all the lines tomorrow. the MAF has zero dirt..
the oil tube and AOS is also a good idea.. as far as AC and the lights .... its doesnt effect my idle at all and everything works fine..
the shifter is slightly loose.. i would say about 8 to 10mm play, may be its not that bad, but i am quite sure its adjustments related..
forget about the radio, i finally figured it out, needed to search the station while keeping the button pressed and then at the same time press the arrow ... it worked!! oh well
If TB has just a light -- very light -- coating of fine dust with no oil and there is no oil behind the TB at the connector from the AOS that's ok.
The engine's idle speed may take a moment to settle down after a hard drive especially if you go from hammering the engine to redline with every shift, lots of big throttle, to idle with no cool down driving. I never do this so I can't say for sure, but it could.
At higher engine speeds and loads the engine develops a heck of a heat load that takes the engine cooling system a while to shed at idle speed and the oil could get rather warm(er) and lose some viscosity from the heat making its way out from the engine internals into the oil and the coolant.
The oil getting hotter before it sheds its heat load might affect the VarioCam actuators which can result in a bit of a idle thing. But it should be short lived and never appear if you drive the car moderately for a bit after a real hard drive.
On a related note, the hard running may have aerated the oil which plays a role in how the VarioCam system works. It depends upon a good oil supply with no air in it.
If you want to hunt for an leak at engine idle you should have an OBD code reader/data viewer with which you can view short and long term fuel trims and from these see if the engine controller is having to add fuel to counter a lean idle condition.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Great car. I like it more than my Carrera.
I figure some time soon I need to make an xls with all the maintenance history done to the car so I'll have an idea of whats to be done on the car. Next set of tires I'll get an alignment.
Beautiful car you have.
