Suggestion

We've replaced several engines that were damaged by road hazards, much like driving through water and hydro-locking the engine, there is no reason why repairs would not be covered by full-cover insurance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My wife knocked a hole in sump in school car park while fetching kids .She drove home and on the way engine cut out and would not start. After towing car to Porsche they quoted for a reconditioned engine and thankfully our insurers have agreed to pay.Car is a 99 C4 Cab with 75K. Does anyone know if the engine would be to the newer spec with improved seals etc? many thanks

POST 2Original post

It should have all of the latest Porsche upgrades. You might consider getting the porsche skid plate to help protect the sump in the future. Some aftermarket companies also offer versions. Do a search on this forum.

POST 3Original post

I agree with the previous post. Also....what insurance do you have? My car insurance guy would tell me to take a flying leap unless you have an extended warranty. Yes?

I don't think warranty and insurance issues are related. If a manhole cover or concrete block busts your enginge when you drive over it, that's an insurance claim. If the engine blows because of an internal (mechanical) failure, that's for the warranty company. I know of at least one other 996 engine replace under an insurance claim when something in the road caused the engine to go kaboom. -td

Did not think of it that way, but I still think my insurance guy would laugh at me. Maybe I need a different insurance carrier.

POST 6Original post

Road hazards would be covered under most auto insurance policies. Internal failures are a warranty issue. You might be surprised what is covered under the "comprehensive." My brother once purchased a 350 SL that later turned out to have been stolen in CA and somehow the thief got a title in IL. The IL Sec. of State police came one day and took the car. His insurance company paid him the amount he had paid for the car about 6 months earlier. I was always amused by the attitude of the Sec. of State police, who took the position that he did not have a valid title to the car even though the Sec. of State had issued the title.

POST 7Original post

That is the best 996 engine failure story I've heard. Congrats!

POST 8Original post

wow.... what insurance? Im changing mine now! Sorry to hear.... but congrats!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How much is a recon engine in the USA?,I was shocked to see Porsche is charging the insurers $20000.00 for engine and $6000 for labour.Crazy.Thank god I do not have to pay.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 16Original post

+1. Great news! And just in time for the weekend! Enjoy! -td

POST 17Original post

Will any kind of car insurance cover this ? or you would have to subscribe to a special 'all coverage' thing ? I have geico and between their comprehensive, non insure, insured, bl abla... I wonder which part of the insurance cover for what... For example they don't mention anything about if the car get stolen. I don't see how I can waive that coverage.. sorry for the newbie question but I understand nothing to insurance

POST 18Original post

congrats! now post some pics of your nice new shiny engine

POST 19Original post

Great ending. Hope your insurance company doesn't punish you with higher rates after the fact.

POST 20Original post

Let this be a lesson to all!! Early 911's have oil pans with exposed bolt heads making it very easy to break a case from bumping into a curb or similar object.
