Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 4Original post

May be more to it than that. Why would not the seller do the cheap fix and turn a higher profit? After all he most likely already has the parts, bolt them on, detail the car and turn a much higher profit. Businesses generally do what's best for them economically. Interested? better check the coolant for oil.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7431329

That's what I was thinking, it appears to be such an easy fix.......Why doesn't he just fix it himself? It would definitely appeal to more potential buyers when fixed. IMHO, I think the price is too high. After is all said and done with the repairs, you will probably be into this car around $15-$16K?? Ones with clean titles, ready to drive and with a service history can be found for around that price range.

POST 6Original post

Looks like sport seats.... Problem is the "easy fix" will put you back up to $20k total investment. Track car candidate maybe?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 7431373

if you do the work yourself! IMO the damage is over $10k at a good Porsche shop and that doesnt count what you cannot see until she is opened up

POST 8Original post

I think 8k would be more like it. With salvage title it's only worth 12 if it was fixed

POST 9Original post

Based on the pics there is frame damage (deciding factor for salvage title) and the reason that the guy didn't slap on some panels and sell it. If it didn't have the salvage title it could be interesting, but trying to sell salvage cars - you run into brick walls with banks and insurance companies.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 7431406

I agree but someone will buy it. There was a local salvage FS -'99 w/33k, front body damage, toasted engine in a box in pieces, salvage title. Sold on eBay for $12k. There is one born every minute.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 7431409

Yes, but who cares if you just want to build a track car, ah someday, retirement is only like 80 years away.

POST 13Original post

I emailed the seller yesterday, that car has 150,000 miles on it. If it was a good runner its worth south of $15k w/o a salvage title. Probabably an $8k car as is, $12k fixed. better to part it out. I saw plenty of 120,000 mile cars right around $15k w/o salvage titles and 85k miles cars at $19k.

POST 14Original post

Typically a salvage title reduces the value on vehicles around 30%, in a good economy. It could be more on exotics and performance vehicles. This is excluding any damage and cost of repairs which will reduce it further.

POST 16Original post

No opinion on this particular car, but I think people are sometimes too hard on themselves about resale value post-repair. Unless it's your plan to sell the car right after it's fixed up, who cares? The value of the car lies in its future utility to you, plus its resale value when you're finally sick of it which, a few years down the road, might not be meaningful given 996 depreciation in general. I find it clears the head a little to take a more rational view of the economics. Market value is meaningless unless you're in the market. (Or, I guess, unless you're in an overmortgaged house). My car is certainly upside down if you think of it in terms of investment versus resale value, and yet I put more money in the bank every month than someone who stretched himself to buy a newer one. Just another perspective...

POST 17Original post

150000 miles the car is worthless! $12k for new motor, $10k for body repair, $3k in basic maintenance to make sure its ready to roll (brakes, tires, tranny fliud ect) give it to me, I will save you the headache

POST 18Original post

what the hell does that mean

POST 20Original post

The Seller IS a Porsche parts recycler. It is just probably easier/faster to sell the whole car as is for $10-12k than part it out piece by piece. Don't forget to negotiate on the final price.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The seller lowered the price to $11,500 now. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/1665644063.html

If that car has a salvage title Porsche would not consider the car properly repaired until it passed inspection by one of its techs. (Chances are the state before it would issue a new title and allow the car to be registered would require the vehicle be inspected by one of its inspectors to certify the car safe and roadworthy.) One portion of this inspection requires the tech to confirm via wheel alignment the chassis was made straight. This can be, is almost always is, a time consuming and expensive operation. But without this the car is not roadworthy and body and suspension and drivetrain components will not fit right will not look right and the car will not be right. The car would be a buyer's nightmare and in most states a seller's nightmare when the buyer came back with the car over and over again. In CA a shop that fixes a wrecked car is on the hook for a long time: Essentially the shop warranties the work for as long as you own the car. That old of a car, with that many miles, and that sort of damage, is a parts donor or track car at best and in this case only for someone who can make it so. Sincerely, Macster.

It can be sold, registered, retitled, insured, but will carry the "Salvage" designation. I don't even know if it's possible to clear the title here, as near new vehicles sold with a branded (Salvage) title may look perfect in every respect but have been reported as a total loss by the insurance company for various reasons like collision, flood, fire, theft or others.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 7435255

[QUOTE=nick49;7435324] Same is true in CA. I had the opportunity -- not that I wanted it -- so sell a car with a salvage title. My new 08 Cayman S was destroyed (declared a total loss anyhow) by another drive'rs insurance company. As part of the settlement I retained salvage rights to the car. After receiving a letter from the other insurance company I obtained a salvage certificate for the car from the CA DMV then arranged to sell the car at a salvage car auction. I observed the sale from the sidelines. When it was announced the car had a salvage title a collective groan arose from the crowd of potentional bidders/buyers. The car even if repaired - and I believe it bought by a couple of guys who intend to repair it and put it back on the road -- will always carry the stigma of a salvage car. Sincerely, Macster.

Mine had a small smack in the rear end, so mild that you would only see a scratch on the bumperette. Total repair bill was $9 grand. I'd imagine this car might need a little more than that.

POST 33Original post

Uhmmm..... are you talking about your ex-996 or your ex-wife? Oh, wait a minute, I figured it out. Since it cost only $9k to fix, you must be referring to your 996.

[Speaking from experience] Salvaged cars that have been in accident have been money pits, don't do it.
