Interesting note, I switch cars fairly often, and for me checked by VIN# (and verified when purchased/ actually insured), the rarer and higher performance version of a car has always been cheaper to insure (this applied to Allstate as well).

Frustrated, I called CSAA and again the agent sucked in some air after I read the VIN to him and he punched in the number into the computer system, but said he'd go check with the DMV (department of motor vehicles) section.

Accident rates and average repair costs are so high that they won't take the risk on Vipers anymore.

When I told them to fax me "everything about every policy I have, I may have to change companies altogether"

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

He came back after a few minutes and said there was some confusion regarding the exact model even with the VIN -- which suggests to me all insurance companies use the same crappy software ...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Again even though I gave the agent the VIN there was still some confusion and even a day or two after I signed up for insurance based on the initial quote which was supposedly arrived at by the use of the VI I supplied I was still getting different quotes for insurance, each one higher than the one before.
Just got a call from my Nationwide Ins agent. If I do not get the 911 off my policy, my policy will be cancelled at the end of the current term. (June)
Clean driving record, Have had them since I was 16, No at-fault claims in the last 10 years. I also have my Homeowners with them as well.
She said it is becasue of the high perfomance?? But they insure the 928 with out problem and that thing runs just as good.
WTF?
anyone else seeing this?
That's just bizarre. I guess Nationwide is "not on your side" anymore.
If you are non event policy holder (no claims in the past 5+ years) then it really doesn't make sense.
Its my thought that they know of the IMS issue, they know that the values of the cars has plunged to where a motor replacment is nearing the price of the car and they are trying to dodge the bullet of fraud. From people burning them, having them stolen, left on the beach at high tide, vandalized or other to total the car.
Lets face it. After market warranties are starting to say "no thank you" as well.
When I bought the car, becasue it had 103K on it no one would touch it. Then I ask them abotu my Trailblazer and told them it had 105 On it and they said "yeah we can do that one" same thing with my partners BMW. They were willing to do it, at 120K miles. But wouldnt TOUCH my 99/996
They just called me back again and said they are looking into this further. She had questions about its exact model. Lots of "gt" and turbo questions.
When I told them to fax me "everything about every policy I have, I may have to change companies altogether"
they thought maybe they may want to take a better look at this.
5 cars on the policy, home owners and Business Liabilty and Workers comp.....
Dont ***** with the Hoff, Ill take my ball and go play somewhere else... And I have a really nice ball
Did you have any tickets or changes in your credit score that Nationwide would consider relevant? Or did they actually just cancel your 911 out of the blue?

USAA has always insured my fast cars without question. They seem to like my money.
Hard to imagine any insurance company doing the calculations based on increased maintenance costs as they don't pay for mechanical repairs.
I have been told several times in the past fews years by body shops that Nationwide was the most difficult of the major companies to do business with.
Based on what I'm seeing as of 1/25/10 the only Porsche's not covered in the state of PA are:
911 turbo
911 GT3RS (they specify RS but not a standard GT3)
Carrera GT
959
All others should be fair game. We hold rate symbols for them in our standard VIN picklists.
...all of the above is assuming you're covered by an standard carrier with Nationwide and not the nonstandard THI carrier.
Andy
Best provider I have found is the Costco sponsored one, if you are a member check it out.
Luckily Nationwide is showing their stripes before you actually need them, move it on out!!
+1 USAA; being that I have just about every type of account with them for the last 13 years. great rates and they are allowing any service member that has served ( honorably). veteran or not.
State Farm for many many years- called them to know difference between 968 I was selling and 911 I was looking at. He said it would be ~$100 increase and send him the VIN when I get it.
Always very easy to work with and fast with claims. [paid for totalled Audi and $24k roof]
Maybe they got confused between Carrera & Carrera GT?
My insurance actually decreased last winter when I went from the 968 to the 996. I think parts availability and cost were catching up with that somewhat rare Porsche.
For the same reasons, I would bet that a 993 is more expensive to insure than a 996. Old tech strength v.s. new tech component approach to manufacturing.
None of which helps you understand why Nationwide are being such Richards...
I suspect and your post above suggests it there's some confusion which Porsche you have.
When I enquired about car insurance prior to buying my Turbo my agent sent me a reply with a quote but said that the computer was showing the VIN a GT3 and "we'd have to talk".
I assured he the car a plain Turbo -- she had the exact VIN to go by as well -- and the car was covered.
When I dropped this company cause of the terrible way it handled my claim I contacted State Farm. Again even though I gave the agent the VIN there was still some confusion and even a day or two after I signed up for insurance based on the initial quote which was supposedly arrived at by the use of the VI I supplied I was still getting different quotes for insurance, each one higher than the one before.

He came back after a few minutes and said there was some confusion regarding the exact model even with the VIN -- which suggests to me all insurance companies use the same crappy software ... -- but the DMV people cleared the confusion up and he gave me a quote that based on my research was quite reasonable and which I accepted.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I have Nationwide for both home and auto. Policy holder for the past 7 years with three cars as listed in my sig. This is the first I've heard of this. To be honest, if they dropped me it would probably save me about 3K per year. I actually plan to drop them after I settle a homeowners claim. They have been just terrible in the customer service department lately.
Allstate....have 3 cars and home owners through them. They had no issue with 911(its actually cheaper than my wifes Volvo S40 go figure??) and also got a qoute for a 911 turbo I was looking at, at the time and they said theyd insure it also.
Alstate is a bit more expensive but they are ussually a pleasure to deal with, they settle claims quick and never gave me a problem. Progressive on the other hand.....Id like to strangle a few people there, absolutely unreasonable!!!!!!!!
For a '99 C2? What a joke.
Another reason I have had USAA since I was 16 and will NEVER use anybody else. Hands down the best company you could possibly ask for.
Have you converted your orange side markers to clear/smoke? If so, I suspect that because your car has been "heavily modded," Nationwide is dropping you. If you put the ambers back on, 'voila!' You'll be able to renew your policy with them in June. FTY and I have had no such problems because we're loyal to the original lighting equipment specs of the car. Ambers forever!
ive had geico for many yrs on my current 92 996 C2, on previous '91 M5, 77 911, & other perf cars. current 02 996 is cheaper than wifes 04 acura RL- got quote from USAA which was much more expensive than geico- few claims have been
handled quick & fair. However, i'm older with good driving record.
I have USAA as well, but many people do not qualify since it is a Military organization. I switched my insurance coverage from the 06 Infiniti g35 and to the 04 911 yesterday and my cost only increased by 50 cents over 6 months. Do I hear Geico calling your name? I would dump Nationwide this instant if they tried that with me.
In NC I switched from USAA to GEICO and did actually save about $400 a year, but when I moved to FL, GEICO doubled and USAA was only a few hundred more the it was in NC. I've had USAA in one form or another (Auto or Home) for about 20 years and they have great service. But of course they would not insure my house in FL, fracking Hurricanes....

I have never forgiven GEICO for making prospective policyholders mail in their radar detectors before insuring them back in the late 1980s.
That, and the damned gecko.
Look into Amica Mutual, not saying get it, just take the time to look into it and see what you think. Very very good Insurance company with fantastic customer service.
Allstate in NJ:
- Covered my 911 996 C2 with some type of pre-approval (not sure exactly - my agent had to call or something)
- Would NOT cover a 911 Turbo. My agent told me this upfront when I was looking for a car and had him running VINs
- Does cover DE events (confirmed twice)

I bet someone on minimum rate/hr looked up a GT and sent up a red flag.
Lots of cars higher power than Porsche and with higher accident rates. Heck, State Farm gave me a good rate on a 12 cyl 275GTS Ferrari when I was 21 !
This is just a "paperwork" screw up.
I worked in the home office of an insurance company for a while. You should have been there when an agent called me about insuring an Opel GT. Only problem was, they cut it half, extended it and wedged in an Allison aircraft engine. Only drove it in parades....(wink/wink].
I find your issue very strange. My 02' Carrera was about the same insurance as my Maxima. My GT3 was more expensive, but no issues getting it insured. I am on Allstate Preferred. I talked to my agent before I pulled the trigger on my GT3. He said the only cars they can not underwrite new policies are Vipers. Accident rates and average repair costs are so high that they won't take the risk on Vipers anymore. Anything other than a Viper was not a problem.
Just the way they run the database. What ever sequince of numbers common tells the thud brains to screw somebodies life up. Much unlike california home insurance which screws everybody
I have Nationwide here in NC. I'm on my 2nd 996 C2, never any problems.
Interesting note, I switch cars fairly often, and for me checked by VIN# (and verified when purchased/ actually insured), the rarer and higher performance version of a car has always been cheaper to insure (this applied to Allstate as well). GT3 cheaper than C2, z06 cheaper than base C5, so on. My license is far from clean, but no accidents and only one (comprehensive) claim in the last ~10 years.
+1
Don't forget how they were actually buying radar guns for police departments around the same time. I might be just one guy, but that company will never get any of my money.
