Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Last smog test had car on rollers and smog tech was able to hold the required RPMs no problem.

Suggestion · Original poster
Has anyone ever been unable to smog test their 03 996 in California because the tac would not hold 2500 rpms for the required 30 seconds during that phase of the test?

Just as Ahsai had suggested, with the clutch depressed, the car (AWD C4) held @ 2500 rpms and completed the test with flying colors.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone ever been unable to smog test their 03 996 in California because the tac would not hold 2500 rpms for the required 30 seconds during that phase of the test? Specifically, when pushing on the gas pedal the rpms only remains at 2500 for approx. 15 seconds before jumping over that mark speeding up to 3000 rpms. When depressing the gas pedal, the rpms immediately drops down below 2500 and will not remain or hold at the 2500 rpm point. If you have experienced this issue, your comments and thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!
If it's a stick shift, you can depress the clutch and the "sympthom" should go away. You should then be able to control the rpm by the gas pedal as you wish.
Not a problem with my 02 Boxster. Last smog test had car on rollers and smog tech was able to hold the required RPMs no problem.
Recently someone posted a message mentioning he was unable to get his Turbo to hold rpms. I tried this and found the same thing then tried it again and meant with success. With both my cars.
What I noticed is that it does not take much throttle to really have RPMs take off with an engine that has no load. The amount of pedal my foot was used to was way too much pedal for say 2500 rpms.
I had to really concentrate and just ease on the pedal very slowly and sneak up on the desired rpm level.
But once I had done this I could hold the rpm level.
In your car's case I believe the fault lies with the tech who is just not using the necessary finesse to get the rpms to the level desired.
Absent a check engine light or too few continuous readiness monitors complete just because tech not able to hold engine at the necessary rpms is not a failure of your car but of the tech. I would be careful to not let the failure be attributed to the car unless it is clear there is something wrong with the car, and from your post I do not think there is anything wrong with the car.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Again, my sincere thanks to everyone for their insight and immediate feedback.
