Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 99 C2 with 60k miles. Great car. But I am thinking of taking it in the direction of the R Gruppe guys starting with my basic 911. Anyone have experience with transplanting a turbo motor or a GT3 motor into a similar chassis? Any other ideas how to modify the car for a bit more fun on those sunny days. Don't want to make it a track car, but want to make it a car good for the track, if you get my drift Any ideas, no matter how wacky are welcome. Might take the best up the road to The Racer's Group and see what they think. Thank you all

POST 2Original post

why not just buy a turbo or GT3 - a lot less headache IMO

POST 3Original post

I totally agree. Would be more cost effective and less painful to just buy a Turbo. Especially with the market the way it is now.

POST 4Original post

Bying a turbo is hmmm...just buying a turbo. Anyone with money can do that. OP want's to tune/hotrod/personalize whatever you want to call it a 966. Not a blasphemy, 996's are 13 in a dozen, so go for it! R Gruppe style in a modern car is a challenge to do correctly, but the Factory already made the 997 SC. Clearly a path to follow. RUF Greenster has also some styling ideas too. There's few ways to proceed with the engine: 1. Old fashioned bore & stroke, 3,9l is doable. LN Engineering Maybe with ITB's, Jenvey has a kit for that. Easy for pre- E-gas cars, slightly trickier for newer ones. 2. Supercharge. Many examples here how to do. 3. Turbocharge. Turbo Technik Pietz 4. Install a 996 turbo engine. In addition to the engine you'll need transmission, Motronic fuel pump with lines and a way to fix intercooling. TTP over there has solutions for that. I have the engine if you need one...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

To Ivangene and Riad: here is the math. Figure $20k + for my car, a reasonable GT3 is now $65k, so what can I buy for $45k for my car. If I bugeted $25k or $30k can I get the R Gruppe idea, hot rod a bit, suspension, you know sleeper. Really don't like the supercharger idea. Too, pedestrian. Pete95zhn, what is the cost for the turbo? Where are you? I am in NoCal close to TRG and other tuners who might want to take this on.

POST 6Original post

GT3 motor might be worth it but a turbo motor would require too much fabrication to fit inside a NB 996. Even the GT3 motor will require an oil tank for the dry sump that has to be planted somewhere.

POST 7Original post

You can buy GT3s in the high 40s. Just have to be patient. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...il-2012-a.html

POST 8Original post

I think it sounds like a great idea...go for it. Should be an interesting project. Let us know how it works out.

Only fabrcation a turbo engine in a NB 996 needs is in intercooling, oli tank is nicely integrated into the engine.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 6959712

Yep, the intercooling needs to be mounted and holes placed into the rears for cooling. So is the GT3 tank the same integration?

POST 11Original post

The bright part is the tank in watercooled version of Metzger engine.

+1 I'd file your idea under just plain wacky. If you want to do it and enjoy the process, terrific. It's just financially even more imprudent than just buying a TT or GT3 and doing minor modifications to your liking. Joe

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 6959579

I wouldn't do it, but I'd love to watch the process and see the final outcome since it's someone else's $$$!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Voyeurs, eh? I get the idea that buying someone else's GT3 or TT means that I get someone else's issues. By getting after development of a personal idea that revolves around making a car that reflects a vision of what the 996 might be sounds interesting. I understand this might be a huge undertaking. I am looking for a shop that would understand this could be a lead into the repurposing of the 996 making money for shops and fun for owners. So nay sayers, please just watch. Ideas of how to do it and what might be done are welcome.

POST 15Original post

Someone on 6speed converted his 99 to a 996 cup. It was beautiful. He dumped over $100K into the conversion and sold it or had it for sale a few years later for $42K. handle was BruceM or something similar.

Uh..... Do you know Chad? Long lost brother? Someone else's issues, if any, are likely to be far smaller than your own issues trying to do an engine transplant. What a 996 might be IS a GT3 or TT. Any suspension, brake, motor modification has been done dozens or even hundreds of times. I think someone had a thread on RL taking a standard 996 and making it look like a 997TT. Anything can be done with enough time and/or dollars. All everyone is telling you is that you better do it because it's fun because financially it's a disaster if you ever want to sell this "creation". Hey, rationalize all you want. Use dollar figures far outside of reality if it helps. Maybe you have an emotional attachment to YOUR car. Whatever it is, I truly hope you do enjoy the process and end up with something you'll enjoy for many years. Joe

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't know about you guys here. Thinking old school with a not so old school car. Excellence has done the write up on several project cars that seem to fit their owners. Seems I remember RUF has a narrow bodied turbo based on the original 996 chassis. I suppose I could call them. What would the R Gruppe guys do? That is what I am thinking. Understand that it could be like a boat, which is a big hole in the water to throw money. Don't want a track only car, but one that is streetable. The community here must have some ideas.

POST 18Original post

Well, you can pick up a 99 cup car for what this will eventually cost net net, so while not a good idea, it might qualify as pure evil genius, and I for one can't wait to see what you do ( although we've had a lot of people start out down this line of questioning, and I don't think anyone ever made good. ) You're probably more likely to find a usable TT motor from salvage (as opposed to gt3), just based on production volume (be warned, new is $$$$$). Be sure to budget for some major league boost. Give some thought to your driveshaftsand remember that big brakes mean new wheel carriers. Take a look at the TT forums here and 6speed, read up on turbocharger upgrades as well just in case you find a turbo motor without the full dressing. Also, and this is just the second hand experience talking here, budget 50% more than the highest quote you get, swaps tend to run long for a variety of reasons. Some have to do with things like computers and mounts, and others have to do with scope creep "since you're in there". Unless you call Ruf, they'll hit their number for the most part. i honestly think you should buy a turbo, even a not so great turbo, and dump a few dollars into boost, a few into dot slicks and brake pads for track days, and call it a day. remove the front diff or buy one with a broken diff and pull it. get polizei livery mocked up. i'll be sufficiently unique.

POST 19Original post

It is actually fairly easy to do, it just takes a lot of time and money that just may not be worth it.
