If the bearings are sealed there is really no point in changing the fluid is there?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All, Just purchased a 99 c2 6 spped, The trans shifts up and down fine and is smooth, no syncro problems. It has a whine only in first gear. All other posts about trans problems talk about whine in the higher gears or all the time? Car has 75k miles. If the bearings are sealed there is really no point in changing the fluid is there? So I guess I just keep driving it till it gets worse? Anybody else had this exact problem.

AFAIK the 6-speed transmission bearings are not sealed and neither is the diff and its bearings. Change the fluid and see if the noise goes away. Sincerely, Macster.

That's interesting..I understood that the G96 (as I think it's called) did have a number of sealed bearings where conventional bearings had been used in the past. I have no reason to doubt Macster...but would love to have some confirmation.

POST 4Original post

lols, i had the Same prob early this summer... This ofcourse happend after going non stop donuts... First Gear Whined, Shifted Fine, Gear it self was Twisted... Your Trans is Caput... Mine had to be Rebuild... 1 and 2nd gear and a Shaft...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The bearings are sealed according to all the posts on this forum and if you look at this video it shows them. Made in Brazil sealed bearings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxV4XRTLBKY That is the main problem with these trans from what I understand.

POST 6Original post

The layshaft bearings are sealed as well as the pinion shaft bearing.

+1 That's what I understand too. Don't know if the sealed bearings are the "main" problem, but definitely one of the bigger and more prominent problems, alongside the 2nd gear syncro.
