Sorry for the "run-on" sentence, but I had to modify my post after I saw Eric's post.

If you can, test drive it before you put the center console back in the car.

However, in your case, it won't do you any good to "mark" the location on the cable end attachments, because based on the pic you posted, you will not be using the original cable end attachments that are currently in your car, because you already have cable end attachments on your "new" shifter.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I picked up a BM shifter from a fellow rennlister that is already in the housing.
Looked at the on-line instructions on the B&M site.
Can I assume It's as easy as it looks? just remove the old one and pop the new one in? any adjustments I need to look out for?
Not that I will be driving my car for a while.. hate winter!
Thanks!
You dog, LOL
Its really that easy, search my thread called "shifter change out" for additional posts
PM me if you get stuckand PLEASE edit BM to B&M ( I was worried !)
Mark the cables (tape/wax pencil) when removing from old shift linkage.
Oh and for anyone else looking for the B&M, yes, we always have it at $199, but watch in a few days for a 'special' for you Rennlisters.
Hit the 'order' page on Monday.
Marc,
Yes it is that easy and you will be able to skip steps 21 through 32. The only thing to watch out for is getting the shifter cables in the cable end attachments at the same location as your current shifter (step #16 remove and step #37 reinstall).
Normally you could simply "mark" the cable end and the cable end attachments, as Eric mentioned above. However, in your case, it won't do you any good to "mark" the location on the cable end attachments, because based on the pic you posted, you will not be using the original cable end attachments that are currently in your car, because you already have cable end attachments on your "new" shifter. You will need to "count the rings" (threads on the cable end attachments) to get the shifter cables in the right position. So
make sure
you "count the rings"
before
you remove the cable ends in Step #17.
If you can, test drive it before you put the center console back in the car. That way, if you have to reposition the cable ends, it will be easy to do.
I would get one of those, if I didn't fear removing my center console, and the instructions weren't so long!
I guess I'll never get one then! Good luck with the install Marc! Should improve things by a lot!
Seriously...it takes an hour + if you have never dont one before... the instructions are like "step one, remove the screw under the rubberin the oddments tray. step 2 remove the srcew on the passenger side of the oddments tray. step 3 remove ashtray, step 4 remove 2 screws under ashtray....
pretty simple
(personally it took longer to read all the instructions than the actual work involved)
Hmm, I'll have to re-consider then! I'd love to firm up the shift action, taking out the mush! But I worry about it making the shift effort too hard.
Let me know how yours comes out Marc!
Sure, if the weather ever gets nice you can take it for a drive and judge for yourself.
I drove a friends 997S with the B&M and the shift effort seemed fine.
Seriously, after having removed the center console + ebrake, I feel silly for having been so aprehensive. It's very straightforward.
As Tim said - count the threads - that's how I did it and I've had no linkage issues at all. The B&M is awesome, you're gonna love it.
A bit of advice: if u find that going into first from a stop is a little notchy, before pulling away shift quickly into second, then up to first... Smooth every time.
Don't mean to be a party pooper....it is not that easy. Removing the console is easy unless you want to make sure you don't scratch the interior. Need to be careful. The adjustment of the linkage can be tricky too, you want to test it before putting back the console.
Ha! I'm still not used to that little NJ quirk! Every time I want to make a left, I pass the "all turns from right" sign, and get confused, then have to go a mile out of my way for the next turn loop thingy!
the city I live in is importing that deal... trouble is that the turn arounds are incorporated into roads that were not intended for such things, and most folks drive big SUV's....so to do the turn around requires a "back up" in the middle....
yea, great idea fellas!
Oh... trucks also have to take this aproach and well... there is an issue with that actually happening.... I suppose on paper it "looked good"
I'm going to do the install in the spring when the weather is a bit warmer (and my garage). A buddy of mine gave me his new in box shifter as he's no has the 996. Hopefully, the install goes smoothly.
As said before, this should be super easy to install. The most annoying part of the installation was already taken care of--the part where you have to slowly break off tabs from the previous shifter housing.
I've never had a problem getting into 1st gear. FYI, the cable lengths correspond to the length of the throws. It's kinda hard to explain (or I'm just an idiot), but 1st, 3rd and 5th are tied together and 2nd, 4th and 6th are tied together. So, if you make the odd gears longer (i.e easier), the even ones will get shorter (stiffer). You can play with the cable attachments and get it to where you like it. As said before--don't close up until you get them to where you want them.
It feels a bit too firm at first, probably because the stock shifter is SOOOOO sloppy. After a couple weeks it feels perfect and I'd never want to go back to the mushy, long throws of the stock shifter.
