Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2001 C4 78k miles. I don't drive it regularly during the winter here in Chicago. However, I don't truly store it either. i try to take it out for 30-45 minutes every week or two. I do winterize it in a way with a fresh oil change, a little more tire pressure, etc. I took it out and noticed that shifting up (R, 1, 3, 5) was real loose and I had to hunt for the gear. I took it in to the dealer and he states that 2 of the shifter cables are snapped and that was caused by a broken front transmission mount. I can't seem to find any reference to parts online for these cables and front transmission mount to compare to what the dealer says it will cost to fix. Of course the dealer tacks on all this fun stuff that his tech noted like "the clutch releases high but other wise seems to shift fine" and that the key is getting stuck in the ignition a bit and may need to replace that in the future. I have had no issue with the clutch and have never felt any resistance taking my key out. So that is making me doubt this dealer a little. Any help or education is very much appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Well, the shifter cables run to the back of the car. Could he possibly have said shifter rod? I am not that familiar with C4 or C4S.

POST 3Original post

The clutch would have nothing to do with those symptoms. Check you shifter cables.
