This is not a probability of success.

I recently purchased the afore mentioned car..pretty good history...checked the codes for PSE didn't seem like it came with one..exhaust is loud (not leaking) it has 996 stamped on it but I have driven similar cars and exhaust note different (quieter) No orange cap fitted.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

newbie here...2000 996 'cab 28000 miles and yes I will post a pic soon... I recently purchased the afore mentioned car..pretty good history...checked the codes for PSE didn't seem like it came with one..exhaust is loud (not leaking) it has 996 stamped on it but I have driven similar cars and exhaust note different (quieter) No orange cap fitted. What clues can I look for? I have been lurking for a while and am impressed by postings on this board.

POST 2Original post

If its Porsche sport exhaust, it should look like this (there are a few more gizmos on the sport exhaust compared to stock): (Pic is from our rennlist sponsor Carnewal (Gert) - great place to buy stuff!

POST 3Original post

no offense but how can you buy a car and not know whats on it? also if the mufflers are small and shiny -could be fabspeed or ghl Mike

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went thru a prebuy everything checked out...sorry I'm not a tech ...it had 4 wheels and an engine...no damage history what more do I want? and a 4 year warranty. I checked out all the porsche codes so this is why I have the question?

POST 5Original post

I don't know about what the actual weight of the PSE is, but it sure looks HEAVY. I always thought one of the selling points of a performance exhaust was lighter weight!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And the original owner is dead....so get me a clairvoyant

POST 7Original post

Easy guys..... limey, I put a PSE on my car after I bought it as many have so it may not have it on the option code list. Is there a switch on the dash that looks like an exhaust tip. If so you have the PSE with the electronics to turn it off or on. Many people install the PSE without the switch so this may not help. If the exhaust looks like the picture jcnesq posted you have your answer. Enjoy the car and the sound...

POST 8Original post

Limey: I bought a certified C4 from a dealer, did the independent check and when I came to pick it up, I discovered it had the Fabspeed exhaust and intake. Rather, the dealer opened it up and said, "oh look, it has a Fabspeed intake..." Being as I have never owned a Porsche, I didn't know what the stock one looked like. It also had a short shifter. Guess the independent didnt seem too taken by it either. I was pretty happy to get a pre modded car!!! 20,000 miles later and all I have had is a broken coolant tank By the way, are you British?

POST 9Original post

Give us the part number on the muffler and it will answer your question.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys for the input..I read much on this great forum about exhausts, perf mods etc. where would I find the serial number ?...This is my first P-car as owning one in England fraught with problems..getting keyed..parking issues etc..I am here in LA ...the only trouble is the exhaust hasn't cooled down enough yet to check.(lol).I understand about the bypass switch and the costs involved to have a PSE installed after market and with the generous margins here on exhaust noise why would you bother. It is a great car and its a beautiful country to drive it in..

POST 11Original post

limey996, I thought you had the part # since you said "it has 996 stamped on it" Ciao, Johannes E.

POST 12Original post

Fabspeed will look like this (see link), so with a much smoother outer surface. Also, it obviously does not look that shiny once its been used. I tend to agree with you on the PSE. http://www.fabspeed.com/996%20Muffle...%20web%202.jpg http://www.fabspeed.com/996%20Muffle...edit%20web.jpg

POST 13Original post

Limey, Congrats on your purchase...lets see her

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok crawled under the p-car (while it was cold!) and thes are the Numbers/Codes stamped on the l/h muffler 99611303 PO95096118 GILLET Thanks for the input gentlemen...

POST 16Original post

It'd help if you could post some pics. Congrats on your new P-car.

POST 17Original post

Gillet is an OEM supplier of standard mufflers, the PSE mufflers are made by Eisenmann if I'm not mistaken. If the std mufflers are too loud they are either defective or perhaps have been modified for increased sound.
