Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

32 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a quick note: I had an itch for something different for various reasons and consequently sold my daily driver 99 996 a couple of weeks ago. I replaced it with a vintage Benz. I would like to thank the folks in this forum for their positive contributions. The 996 forum consists of good folks. By the sheer nature of the 996 age and price point, future owners will be increasingly dominated by hands-on enthusiasts. This is a good thing - reminds me of the 356 crowd and 914 owners a couple of decades ago and the 80s 911 & 944 crowd now. Some of you may know, I've owned this 996 twice. I sold and re-bought it from Ed (ivangene) who now drives my ex-86 911. The 996 was a great car with its original engine, clutch, IMS and tranny (132K miles). Great memories. Keep the faith on these cars!

POST 2Original post

UMMM....I thought we had an agreement..... GEEZ, now what.....I dont want a Benz...guess I keep the 3.2 email me the details if you dont mind....

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Shoot, I forgot about the agreement. Sorry! Heck, I wouldn't trade the 86 at this point. That car has good bones.

POST 4Original post

LOL - I am FAR from "done" with it..... however its dead right now, alternator out and battery (after voltage spike blew out the headlight/blinker switch - fixed)

What Benz did you buy? Off and on (though I have to admit mostly off) I toy with the idea of buying a nice Benz with a V12 engine, preferrably a 2-door model. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Early 70s V-8. The thing cruises like it's on the Autobahn. I'm an equal opportunity car marque as long as they are Porsche, 50s-80s Benz, and Ferrari. :-)

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The ivory white one is mine. The blue one is my brother's. The car is at shop being gone through to make sure I can rely on driving it anywhere.

POST 9Original post

WOW.... I gotta try one of those someday! BTW I like yours better than his....hows the suspension...cushy!

POST 10Original post

That's awesome.. Just tlast week I started checking older benzes and would consider selling my 944 for one. in particular, a '72 280SEL 4.5s (no 6.3 and air suspension for me). My brother had a '68 250 sedan. manual trans and manual sunroof. My grandfather had among others, a 59 190SL, and a '74 280C. My folks had a '74 450SEL for a spell in the 1980s too. Indeed.. "vault like".

POST 11Original post

Looks like a 280SE. Nice! Restoring a 1961 220 here.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a 72 280SE 4.5 L. It is the last year of the M108. Coil springs. I love the 6.3 engine but not with the air suspension, so no 280/300 SEL for me either. I do have access to a 6.3 engine if I want. This chassis is the first that the AMG folks built and raced in Germany (prior to Mercedes buying them in the 90s). Yes, all my cars typically have some racing provenance/heritage attachment. I might drive this car down to the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Monterey this coming October. For the 996 folks, come say hi to me at the track; my Rothmans car just got accepted to race at this event.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

By the way, I find it interesting that there are a few posters that are into Benzes as well. Good to know! Ed, you can drive my car/s (P race car and this Benz)...

POST 14Original post

I'd offer you the same but you may not like the Suburban

POST 15Original post

Benz's aren't made by elves though. Beautiful car though. I love the classic lines.

POST 16Original post

my daily driver is a 1989 190e 2.6l and i love it!

POST 17Original post

10-15 years ago a 190SL was an easy buy--their rise in popularity has been stunning. I shouldn't be surprised as it has the style of the priceless 300SL.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The 50s 190SL and 300SL are some of the most beautiful exterior designs - on par with same era Ferrari Barchettas and Porsche Spyders.

Nice. The most fun Mercedes I've owned is a homologation version 190e with the 16 valve Cosworth engine and Getrag dogleg 5 speed tranny - similar to what Ayrton Senna drove at some PR race in the 80s and what were raced against E30 M3s in DTM racing. In fact, this is the car I bought right after I sold my 996 to Ed. Fun revvy engine. Kinda wish I had access to drive it once in awhile. Hmmm. Maybe I'll give the current owner a call...

You posted this photo in one of my threads, and now after picking up a new Benz I'm back looking again at old Benz's...... The slopes we walk on....

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8745072

An older Benz can complement your early 911. Maybe I'll go the other way and look at early 911s again. Certain cars just get into your blood...

POST 23Original post

I like the original gullwing Mercedes Benz model.

POST 24Original post

Congratulations, that is a beautiful Mercedes! I'm relatitvely new here but I have to say I love the "vibe" of the forum. I've been on many "specialty" forums where even long time posters get vilified for changing brands. It's nice to see the congratultaions come out.

POST 25Original post

Great way to scratch an itch. Now Ed can completely forget about ever going back to water cooled Porsches(it's final Ed).

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 8745733

there is always that 951 I have been eye-balling

POST 27Original post

Ed, you can have mine when I decide to trade for another 911

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 8745925

you thinking about getting a "real 911" I am seriously not letting this one go...I cant imagine a better car. If I could I would buy an older one but those are really really tough to daily drive...newer? 964 why? 993, love em...too expensive, 996-7 not really unless it was a gt3..box or cay..i dont think so uunless really cheap and I could gut the sucka for a lightweight track toy - nah, the 3.2 is pretty great and really fits my wants and desires. not saying I wouldnt want or dont like the others, just pretty happy with this and the repairs are reasonable so far...

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8745787

A 951? Now you're talking... ;-)

POST 30Original post

is your old 996 staying local? I often see it around, great looking car with that areo nose on it. :-)

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8749074

As far as I know, it is still local. Yup, I like the factory GT3 front as well. If you see it, it will not have its roof rack as I kept it. ;-) I'm hoping the roof rack will fit a reliable 997 PDK at some point. Verdict is still out for me, so I'm sitting on the sidelines and sticking to old cars.

POST 32Original post

I'd really like to have one of these (or a 2.6 sportline - 5 speed).
