Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The second time we left it on the jack, changed all the parts and then replaced the transmission.

if the clutch is bad, you may need to replace the flywheel, too.

What should I inspect/replace while I'm down there?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Reading through the threads, I'm still undecided whether I'm going to replace the clutch myself, or have a dealer or indy do it. Either way, I'm going to order the parts through Pelican or Sunset. What should I inspect/replace while I'm down there?
I've got an '02 C2 with 45K miles
1) Sachs Clutch kit, including clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.
2) RMS seal... at only $16, I might as well have one handy, even if there isn't visible leaking <-edit, changed is to isn't
3) Pilot bearing (Pelican suggests replacement)
4) Flywheel bolts - in case I need to pull the flywheel for machining
Anything else?
- pressure plate bolts, or are they reusable?
a few thoughts:
1. do you have the skills to drop the transmission, etc.?
2. if not, do you think that a dealer or indy wouldn't want to provide the part?
3. if you inspect the parts, are you qualified to know if they are good/bad?
4. is the clutch slipping? If not, why are you looking to change the clutch?
Steve
I'm in a similar boat. What about any updated parts like clutch forks, etc., that should be replaced? I think I've seen something somewhere (maybe on RennTech)? I've done clutches on other cars. Debating whether to do it on my P-car.
1) Yes. I just don't have my own lift, making it a pain.
2) Prices for parts in Canada are absurd. Depending on the part, 50 to 200% more. The dealer and indys have told me they'd be fine with me supplying the parts.
3) See #1
4) The clutch is done and needs to be replaced.
Renntech has a TSB showing an update on the Fork as of April 19, 2000, from the transmission number G9600 1018220 onwards.
My friend and I changed the clutch on his 04 996 and my 99 996. Was not that hard. Neither car had an RMS problem although I ordered the seal just in case. We put the vehicle on 4 jack stands and dropped the trans. I would highly recommend you purchase a transmission jack (~$60.00). Also, make sure you have a transmission alignment tool.
Pressure plate bolts are reusable. We bought all parts from Sunset. Also, there is an upgraded clutch fork (it is actually the 997 fork), which you should replace while you are in there. Make sure you get the replacement ball and retaining spring that the fork rides on. When I ordered mine it didn’t come with it.
Also recommend that you have someone there to help you as there are many bolts, etc. Overall the job was not that bad and took about 8 hours with a lunch break and jacking up the car.
At 45K miles, I think having the flywheel machined "should" be sufficient... well, I hope so.
The part numbers I have so far are:
1) 996-116-911-02-M38 - Sachs Clutch kit, including clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.
2) 997-101-212-00-M17 - RMS seal
3) 999-052-210-00-M100 - Pilot bearing
4) 999-073-092-09-M260 - Flywheel bolts
pmkazz, do you have the part #s for the updated fork and associated parts? Is there a # for the alignment tool?

You can contact Performance Products (

) for the clutch alignment tool. We made one out of a wood using a lathe and the specific dimensions of the pilot bearing and the clutch disk. Worked perfectly.
The first time we did the clutch we took the transmission off the transmission jack. This was a mistake because it took us an hour to get it lined up and back in. The second time we left it on the jack, changed all the parts and then replaced the transmission. It took five minutes to slide back in.
