Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Exhaust and suspension are probably the only two on the "important list" now that you have SSK.
Leading evidence: 'only two' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only two' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace stock mufflers' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suggestion
I'd only replace the stock mufflers for a better sound & to shed a few pounds.

Which my Mechanic says is because it's running richer now due to the engine getting more air and less back pressure.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There has been no improvement except for the sound.
after owning 2 930s an sc and carrera, i finally pulled the trigger and stepped up to 996c4s...great car, but i would like some mod advice, 1) are headers worth the investment or are the stock manifolds good enough with muffler mods. do i need headers with 02 sensor bung? intake side; is the aftermarket plenum from road and sport supply worth the investment, what about cold air intake? does the engine need to be re-mapped(?) what about chipping the motor? what brand? do mods need to be done 1st before chip? will dash lights come on with these mods? what about the relatively cheap headers imported from asia found on ebay. i am installing b&m shifter this wknd, its got to be an improvement...did i miss anything? im open to any and all suggestions thanks , kevin
Lots of questions there
Im also new to the C4S... would love to know answers to many of the items you inquired about as well. I had planned to install the B&M with Evo link this weekend as well... must be an improvment -lol.
Lets see some pics of your new beauty!
There are many more expert people than me, but the consensus seems to be that mods to N/A engine have pretty small impacts for the money invested (although a nice intake/exhaust will SOUND great, which is fair enough).
If you're still on stock suspension, you may find the best investment is $1-4k on one of the various upgrade possibilities - a search will give you lots of impassioned arguments in favour of each of the various options (M030, PSS9, X73/X74, etc)
+1 on NNH's comments. Engine mods on the NA 996 do little to improve, and any improvements come at a cost of decreased performance in some other aspect. Maybe an SC, then the airway and exhaust with mapping will work with it. Too much for too little, though, IMHO. Might as well get a turbo from the get-go.
Otherwise, the best bang for true performance enhancement is suspension, then brakes.
No first hand experience here (except the MKI mod on my cans) but from reading other's post, it would take doing ALL the mods (CAI, IPD, headers, mufflers, chip/tune) to feel any noticeable gains.
I agree, I've done all the mods with the exception of headers and cats. There has been no improvement except for the sound. I have much higher oil consumption. Which my Mechanic says is because it's running richer now due to the engine getting more air and less back pressure. On the track I have a well known spot where I record my speeds. Since all the mods were done there has been no difference.
SC in my opinion is the only option to make a real noticeable improvement. Probably also reduces the engine life as well.
B&M shifter is a huge improvement.
Engine mods are a complete waste of money. Been there, done that. I'd only replace the stock mufflers for a better sound & to shed a few pounds.
Suspension is a good place to spend some cash.
What he said. Also, the driver is really the best improvement path bar none. One note, do not install an aftermarket instake (K/N snorkel for example). We have a whole shelf dedicated to the one's we've removed all of which are sitting next to the blown MAF from the same car.
