Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I initially ran crossed over topgear 200cel cats which added to the volume but then picked up a custom made 200 cel x-pipe that lived on some track car and I've enjoyed that exhaust note much more, especially at high RPMs next to a wall
Leading evidence: 'Run crossed over topgear 200cel cats' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check history of the 996 csr build' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The RPM Technik CSR exhaust silencers were used on a lot of the 996 CSR builds, but some builds used custom centre exit systems.

Suggestion
It is been a long time, so my memory might be off, have you checked the history of the 996 CSR build?
Run catted x-pipe should give you a smoother sound

Suggestion
Running a catted x-pipe should give you a smoother sound which should provide a higher pitch exhaust note at WOT and high RPMs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all 2001 C2, 6-spd.
Context: my best friend of 20 years is a huge car guy, a mechanic, and a certified welding instructor.
He has incredibly kindly offered to spend time building a custom exhaust for my car this winter with me, just bc why not.
In terms of what Im after sound wise the factory exhaust is too quiet for me, but I also dont want to be an annoying neighbor. I also dont want drone.
Im aware of Fister & the gundo hack Im not going in that direction. I am going to preserve my stock system so that I can easily revert it back to stock if/when its time to sell down the road. This is intentionally a ground-up build.
If anybody has done this themselves and has any tips, we would appreciate it.
Cheers
Some folks have cut the mufflers open and sort of "gutted" them. The posts did not show where they cut them or how much was removed, so it is just a guess. Long ago in age of dinosaurs, I cut a 930 muffler apart and took out everything, welded it back together. Wow, too loud. So I put it in a bandsaw vertical cut to long length, cut about 2/3 through. I made a SS plate with 1/2" holes in it and slid it in the band saw cut. Welded, ground flattish finish, everything looked good.
The finish was great, less sound, but still open and had that typical 930 rumble amplified. No drone, worked great, my opinion. Perhaps find a used set of mufflers from cdauto, or other dismantler, maybe ebay and experiment? Just suggestions.
YMMV
This is really cool and kudos to your friend who is offering to help! I'd think about the type of sound you want vs just louder. Using high flow cats like 200 cel should give you better flow and more sound for sure. Running them crossed over like stock should provide more "rasp" and more of a traditional non-GT porsche sound. A lot of people like that. Running a catted x-pipe should give you a smoother sound which should provide a higher pitch exhaust note at WOT and high RPMs. More like a GT3 at full tilt. I initially ran crossed over topgear 200cel cats which added to the volume but then picked up a custom made 200 cel x-pipe that lived on some track car and I've enjoyed that exhaust note much more, especially at high RPMs next to a wall
If you're going all custom, I'd also consider some valved mufflers that can give you that dual personality with exhaust. I've enjoyed the ability to have a quieter exhaust note on longer trips and then turning it up when the road was more exciting.
CSR or CLR ?
If the latter that was a Kline inconel exhaust.

Apart from the custom carbon fibre tips with "CLR" let into them, it was a standard off the shelf item.
The RPM Technik CSR exhaust silencers were used on a lot of the 996 CSR builds, but some builds used custom centre exit systems.
