Suggestion · Original poster

The idea behind having fun with a c4 on wet pavement is that you are able to slide the car without using too much speed, as to break the car loose on dry pavement would require considerable amount of speed which can get out of control too easily with little time to recover.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally Southern California is getting some needed rain, at last I am able to drive my C4 as it was intended. I still remember an old Porsche C4 advertisement "Pray for bad weather". That's exactly how I felt when I was driving in the rain today. Sorry, this is a rare event for us S. Californians.

POST 2Original post

heh, you're liking this rain eh? Good stuff. How about drive the F360 in the rain?

POST 3Original post

My snow shoes are ready and I put them on in the morning- I can't wait!

LOL! yeah right, you know the story with the f-cars. Garage queens. Thank God there are the p-cars, good old everyday German performance go anywhere, park anywhere, valet anywhere.

POST 5Original post

As much fun as it may be, I totally avoid driving my C4S in the rain.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 5020857

same here and i have a bigger challenge than you - it's not fun to drive in the rain. and i'd be just as likely to valet the 911 as i would a ferrari.

POST 7Original post

why save them for the next guy? I drive mine in rain or snow and it goes better then most!

POST 8Original post

Gotta say I am a big fan of the rain too. A little slick on the tires is nice...we get a lot more rain than socal up here.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 5020857

Good point. It might melt.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't understand people that don't drive their 911s, these car were made to be driven. You would actually have a lot more problem with the car if it is just parked all the time, all the seals will dry up and crack and will leak like a rusty bucket. In recent years Porsche cars have followed the standard depreciation pattern as normal consumer cars, so regardless if you just park it or not, it still will drop in price. I.E. I bought my 96 993 in 97 with 5k miles on the clock for $62k, drove 90k miles in 12 years which comes out to be about 7k miles/year. In the end I sold the car for $25k, so that comes out to be $3k / year of depreciation. Say if just parked the car and only have 35k miles on it, it would have sold for about $30k. Which comes out as $2.5k/year. So for $500 a month I would rather drive it whenever I can. Now with the f-car it is an entirely different story, f-car don't sell well with miles. Anything above 30k miles is cursed. For example, a 2000 360 coupe with 12k miles sells for about $110-$120k range, and a same year 360 with 30k miles sells for $90k range. That's 30k difference just for 20k miles.

For me it is just more enjoyable in good weather, the rain would not bother me so much, I just don't like ice/snow. I know you guys know better and it IS better to drive them all the time. I just seem to have a bit of a mental block with this subject and I'm still trying to keep it mint/lower miles, for me not re-sale. Now if I had an F-car sitting next to the P-car my outlook might change. My P-car would then be my winter beater, I would have multiple Rennlist life time memberships and hot young mujeres chasing me all over town. Now that's a high rolller! When I grow up I want to be just like that. Just don't tell my wife, ha.

Ludwig, I think your son is reading your mind from his Christmas artwork...

You should try the snow! I drive my C2 cab (with hardtop) in the winter and it's great!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 5021531

Yep, I agree. I love driving my C4S in the rain, what little we get! I'm amazed how the Porsche AWD system makes driving in the rain seamless.

POST 16Original post

My 2 previous toys were both corvettes. This is my first AWD car. I don’t think I would ever go back to 2wd. I do drive my C4 in the rain, but I refrain from taking it out in the snow due to the crazy amounts of salt used around here. It just way too corrosive

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Agree. Snow and ice is bad.... Doesn't matter what 4 wheel drive system you have, if there is ice you are SOL. Lived in GA for 7 years, first time in my life that I had to drive on ice. Traction control, ABS, PSM, LSD whatever all useless on ice.

POST 18Original post

way too much stroking porsche in this thread. it's awd. it's been done and been done with far bigger numbers by subaru and audi. what's the big deal about awd and driving a car in the rain? it's not fun. you can't go nearly as fast in the wet as in the dry. you can easily slide the car in the rain. easily. and about the whole driving thing not for the next owner.. speak for yourself. i avoid driving in the rain, but i'll put on 15K miles on my C4S this year and i do have a commuter/utility truck that's very reliable. but i try not to drive in the rain and i LIVE in the great pacific northwest where it's green for a reason.

POST 19Original post

If its not fun, you must not be doing it right!!!

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5022120

Dude, I am very Sorry to hear that. If you are not able to experience fun with a C4 then you are probably not driving it like it was intended. The idea behind having fun with a c4 on wet pavement is that you are able to slide the car without using too much speed, as to break the car loose on dry pavement would require considerable amount of speed which can get out of control too easily with little time to recover. On wet pavement it requires less to break loose with less speed. Anyways, enjoy your utility truck in the rain.

That can happen in the dry too by a someone looking in a mirror. You can also get run over by a bus tomorrow. Its just a luck of the draw. Question is where do you draw the line on a car that is made to be driven? Robin took an opportunity to praise a car we all love and gets bashed for it. Just weird.

Quotes source post: 5021830

It's not the '60s any more; cars simply don't rust anything like they used to. I'd be happy to snap a picture of the undercarriage of my '02 Ford that's gone through 140k miles of midwest weather (washed about once a year!) but there's too much salt sticking to it. That said, show me a picture of a rusty 996 and you might be on to something, but I've sure never seen one. YMMV.

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 5022450

It boggles my mind that someone wouldn't take an automobile onto a public road because someone might crash into it. Oh, sure, if you've got a rare F-car or Lambo, maybe keep it in the garage on the bad weather days. But you've got...a 996, aka "the commodity Porsche". No offense to my car intended, but some days I'd be just fine if it got totaled--what better excuse to find a C4S or a TT or a newer C4 or a C4 with more options? I'd have a much easier time sneaking a new Porsche past my SO if I had a wrecked one in the driveway. Hell, all I'd have to do would be to drag the car into the garage and tell her that I'm going to pull an mfletch, i.e. "Honey, I think I'm just gonna rebuild this one. No idea how long it'll take." She'd be BEGGING me to just go buy a Turbo or something.

POST 41Original post

Now that's a different take on things. Trade in? aw hell no. Sell it? Forget it. Totaled? YES! Now were talking. To many, a 911 is not looked at as the "commodity Porsche" but more like a dream that most never achieve. Even the 996, drop in value and all, is not for many. People still stop, stare, and wish (I know I did for years). There is always bigger better and I also look ahead to the next, maybe to much so. I sometimes have to catch myself, step back and take a close look at my current blessings, including the material kind. I must say tooloud, I found the last part of your post very funny

POST 42Original post

Quotes source post: 5024020

I mostly agree with you, but the whole "dream" thing is a figment of many people's imaginations. I can't even count the number of times that somebody will seem shocked that I have a 996 (worth what? $25-30k?) while they're driving around in a brand new $40k pickup or SUV as a commuter vehicle. I mean, what gives? Are there THAT many people that don't understand how cheap--er..."inexpensive" these cars are? Almost anybody in my office could easily own one, but they clearly think my car is something unobtainable for some reason.

POST 43Original post

Maybe if we wreck some more of them they will go up in value? Or, just raise insurance rates [ Really, just keep them clean, respect them and DRIVE them. At $25-30K they are worth using, how low can the price go? I bought mine 2.5 years ago for $29K drove it every day for 22,000 miles changed the brake pads just this month and one MAF. Cost, three hundred and seventy five dollars. Best car I have ever owned financially and the most enjoyable. I have owned every series 911 except 993 they have all been great cars but this one has cold A/C and a transmission that downshifts into every gear.

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 5024251

Good point. I have no answers to that, makes me wonder as well. Going by looks and the name you would think big $$$ right from the get go. Also hard to tell the new 75K+ from the say 5 year old 30-40K 911, unless you are into them that is.

POST 45Original post

I hope it is going to be dry tomorrow because my wife has to take my P and it doesn't like the rain AT ALL! Neither do I, because I have to clean it after..

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 5022120

Hmmmm ... lets see if I have this right. You live in Pacific Northwest and you put 15K on your car a year, yet the car doesn't see the rain. Yeah right.

POST 47Original post

it is even more fun to drive the c4 in the snow!!!!

POST 48Original post

Quotes source post: 5030446

And that is why I am seriously debating getting a 996 C4 as a DD... Driving a Mini Cooper S in the snow is fun, but a 996 would be ideal... And btw - I really enjoy driving my GT3 at the track in the rain. It is the best teaching agent available and I am a better driver because of it... -B

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 5023756

All relative, I guess. Toyota cranks out roughly 10 million cars in a single year. BMW made a total of about 3 million E36 series cars during that model's 8-year run. Porsche built somewhere around 180,000 996s, if memory serves. To most of the world, that's a pretty rare car, certainly not disposable or a "commodity", IMHO. But I guess if you're in the Ferrari snack bracket, maybe...

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
