Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Trying to jump my 2001 996 with a low battery. Is there something that I am missing? The weather here is about 0 degrees and I have the cables hooked up correctly. When I turn the key I get a GRRRRuuup (one turn) and then clicks with the windows moving up and down. I just put winter tires and wheels on her so I very much want to take her out. She has been sitting only two weeks since I started her last. Any ideas? Thank you so much. Paul

POST 2Original post

Either it is really really low and needs to sit charging longer or your battery is bad. If the battery is bad you can still have power but not enough to start the car, jumpers will not help out either. Have you been driving it lately? Battery old? Did it sit and charge a long time? p.s Many places test batteries for free, incase one is close to you

Are you sure that's true? I've had the deadest battery you can imagine - no click when the key is turned, radio codes and trip odo wiped out, the whole thing - and still started it with a jump. Flame me for asking, but are you sure the cables are properly hooked up on both cars, and the donor car has all its lights and accessories turned off? Also, I really do prefer using the jumper cable points in the engine compartment rather than the battery itself. How do you have the cables connected?

POST 4Original post

Let it sit for about 10 mins while hooked up to the donor battery/car to let the battery charge if it's weak. Then try to start again. Change the battery!

If the battery is dead is one thing (it will jump start) but if it has a bad cell, or say bad battery, than it will not jump start (still might have enough power for some things). This was the case with me some time ago.

+1. It's toast. Also worth trying to figure out why it died. If it's more than four years old and subjected to a lot of short-trip driving, it could be a natural death. If not, you've got a parasitic draw somewhere in the bowels of the little beast...

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 5024163

...or the alternator... Just check the voltage to see if it's the battery or alternator. Regardless, a new battery seems necessary.

POST 8Original post

My battery was also completey dead last week. Nothing registered on the dah voltage guage, radio would turn on but no sound.... I hooked up to my charger at 50amp thinking it would fire it right up and got the clicking, window spazzing and even my OBC where the temp always is now shows Miles to Empty instead (anyone know how to get it back to temp?) I let it sit on the charger for about 10 minutes while I shoveled some snow and it fired right up. Put it on the trickle charge for 6hrs and it has been sitting for a week and started right up today for me.

POST 9Original post

Mine was dead after doing some work...ended up being a loose engine ground cable. Everything worked fine but it wouldn't even turn over, just clicked. I tightened the cable and she fired right up.

POST 10Original post

Your battery is Kaput, get a new battery from any Auto Store... the Battery you need is a "Group 48" which is one size smaller than OEM but more Power... Trust me, been there done that last week... Car Starts like a Charm, now

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you all for the help. I will charge it over night and see if it starts in the morning. I will let you know. Paul

I had to do this when my battery died also. With thanks to Wellard, we did get it jumped and started.

Lazer Had the same problem with my 01 C4 on Sunday - put mine on a battery tender Monday and my finger are crossed for this weekend. Still wont leave the house without cables for a few days Members here gave me some good advise re new Battery/charging and testing Check it out------> https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/405420-yet-another-battery-victim.html Good Luck

POST 14Original post

When you jump a car with a dead battery make sure the doaner car's engine is running and keep the RPM at 3-4k for few minutes before you try to start the car with the dead battery.

I went for a fairly expensive one of these, 760 cca (which is WAY more than usually recommended for these cars). It's a real pleasure. The car fires up like new in any temps, and it doesn't even notice my upgraded stereo.
