Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am in the market for a 99-01 996, and have been reading up on these cars from this forum, and a few others quite a bit. I have 2 cars that i am interested in, one is a 1999 with 25k miles on it, and the other is a 2000 60k miles on it. 1999 25k miles black\black 6spd - $31k 2000 60k miles seal gray\black 6 spd - $32k Both in favorable colors and options that i want, and seem to be in the excellent condition. I have not had a PPI on either yet, but plan to do. From reading these forums, i am skeptical on the lower mileage car. The car has been driven less than 5k miles a year. Ive heard stories that engine failure usually happens on the lower mileage cars. I have thought about getting an extended warranty for 4k more. In hindsight both cars are priced similiarly. For all you 996 veterans out there, what are your opinions on the lower mileage cars. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

If you can get a warranty for both I would get the '99. Fastest due to being lightest and it has far less miles.

POST 3Original post

take a look at mine. 30k miles, new clutch, RUF body kit, nice stereo set up, 18 wheels, litronic lights, RMS perfect. 29k firm! https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/389449-fs-1999-996-w-ruf-body-kit-32k.html

POST 4Original post

There are many to choose from. I bought a low mileage 99 and love it. Few issues to date and fun to own and drive. Look at any for sale by a Rennlister...there are some great buys like the post above.

Talk the 2000 owner down a few grand. IMO, it's a bit much for that model (unless there are great options on it). That is, if you aren't buying from a dealer . In fact, Park Place (blech) is selling a 2000 with 85K miles for 27.9K. So the price you quoted is either a bit high or about par for dealer prices. The 99 also seems a bit high, but in the ball park for low mileage. I would be concerned about less than 3K miles a year (around 250 per month). Besides, as mentioned, there are loads of good deals on 911's out there. Keep shopping! Or buy sk8worlds ride. Them Ruf kits are expensive -td

POST 7Original post

Thanks for the advice guys. sk8world's your 996 is very nice, i wish you were close to the Northeast. You up near Huntsville, AL?

POST 9Original post

I just got a Seal Grey (have been looking for the right car in that color for AWHILE!!!) 996. It is a 2000 with $80k miles. Got a 5 year warranty from a reputable place. Thing is MINT. Looks like a new car. And got the car for $24000. Warranty was another $2000 or so. Deals can be found and, if you get a good warranty, the mileage shouldn't be a concern. Chances are I won't own this car for more than 2 years based on my history....

POST 10Original post

Look at the interiors of the cars. If the 99 doesn't have alot of leather options then it will usually have the plastic /pebble interior, sort of like a basketball. Not very nice, Porsche dropped it after the first year. In 2000 Porsche started using the "soft tuoch" paint which is much nicer. Also, in 200 the HP went from 296 to 300, and egas for the throttle. The HP difference is not really enough to notice.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes im focusing on a c2. I have seen quite a few high mileage c2's for 26-28k but they were not in the condition that im looking for. I want a mint condition 996, and i am willing to pay more to get a car in this type of condition with a service history. I know there a lot of nice 996's out there, but its a bitch to buy one thats not within 200 miles of my city.

POST 13Original post

Yes, it is a pain to not buy locally, esp with these cars. I got mine for $29,000. 2000 C2 with 58,000 miles when I bought it. Not many options but very nice condition with service records. The interior looks hardly used.
