Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I think the coolant tank on our 1999 996 C2 may be cracked as a fair bit of fluid is leaking all over the left hand muffler and tail pipe, and the top of the tank is dry (ie. unlikely the cap). I know this is a common failure. Where is the best place to buy one of these tanks if you were to replace it yourself? Is the dealer the best bet, or does an after market supplier offer these units at a substantially cheaper price? By the way, I'm in Toronto - I only mention because not all U.S. after market suppliers seem to be keen on shipping to Canada (even with fair shipping costs factored in). Any suggestions with regards to suppliers are appreciated. Thanks, Jeff.

POST 2Original post

Have you talked to the dealer? If you are out of warranty they might "good will" some or all of it since it is a documented problem with the earlier tanks cracking and having to be replaced. This is not an easy DIY task.

POST 3Original post

Are you kidding me? It is simple to replace the tank and cap. I did mine in less than an hour using Loren's tutorials.

POST 4Original post

Loren does not have a tutorial...there are others that have posted thier DIY instructions on renntech. The tank is NOT meant to be wiggled out risking damage to any of the sensors, etc. As well you do not cut any pieces off. THis is the reason the engine is dropped just a tad so it slides in and easy with the greatest of ease. Yes you can do it yourself (and I do most work on my car) but this is an area I wouldn't venture into.

POST 5Original post

I was unable to find the DIY for this in Loren's pages, also. I stopped driving my car even though I missed a great PCA driving event this last weekend. Our local independent Porsche certified mechanic just got my tank and will replace it Thursday.
