This means that they've gone through 3,073 engines since they installed his on his car in April 2005.

But still I've very glad to have removed all that particulate matter along with what was probably a very nearly clogged filter and replaced the dirty oil with fresh and the old filter with a new one.

Now does the last 5 numbers mean mine was replaced after Mr.

Since I had my engine replaced right at the same interval, I figure that most items are covered by the swap (naturally).

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Gents:
A while back I'd posted about my 'new engine' experience and I figured i'd crawl under there and get some pictures while it's still all shiny...
sooo...gawk away (if you're into that stuff...
)
The question I have is regarding the 60k mile service. Since I had my engine replaced right at the same interval, I figure that most items are covered by the swap (naturally). However, I have a new air element (pollen) on my shopping list since I'm sure they didn't change that out. Honestly, in all the dilemma about the engine, the 60k mile service simply escaped my mind...(figures). I got a new clutch put in though...(not totally lost...) Sooo, I have a couple of items to DIY and get much more familiar with my baby (that's the way I see it...). I'm wondering about the engines air/fuel filters....
Can you recommend/recall any other item that may have been missed, and deserve a look?
Thanks a bunch...
Pete
Thanks Man!!
I AM!!
...to be quite honest, I was quite perturbed by the whole experience....
for a good while I was thinking of just selling the car off...and take my lumps and learnings...
but since I got it back, I'm finding myself much more into her...
i'm still taking it easy since I only have 650 or so miles on her...but this new engine is strong!!
the power on it comes much more smoothly than my other one. (i'm wondering if my old engine had some vario cam guide wear...or something like that, but this one just gives me smooooth power)
oh...and the new clutch action is fantastic!!
i'm renewing vows...
The honeymoon is back on!
I bet it feels great and knowing it will last, takes away some of the worries of owning and older car (sure it was painful getting to this point though)
WTG - great pics and story
Pete, great pics. I love Porsche **** (a.k.a. upskirt pics)!
I would check the air filter and the pollen filter. I would guess that the air filter was changed but the pollen filter probably was not changed.
big items on a 60k are plugs (you got new ones) belt you dont have a new one, new engine comes sans belt, and fuel filter, fuel filter doesnt come with an engine either. So you need
pollen filter
air filter
belt
fuel filter
battery checked
brakes flushed
drains cleaned
seals cleaned and lubed
radiators cleaned
door latchs and locks cleaned and lubed
Im sure your car was given a good once over while at the dealer so unless you declined anything id say your good on leaks and such.
"air filter
belt
fuel filter
battery checked
brakes flushed
drains cleaned
seals cleaned and lubed
radiators cleaned
door latchs and locks cleaned and lubed"
Yep! This is exactly the same list I've got on this weekend's DIY project...
Should be fun!
Thanks for the input fellas!!
...oh...and the answer is NO....she won't stay this clean....
Pete
2002 and later cars no longer have a removable fuel filter. It is built-in to the fuel pump.
The thing to remember now is that your routine maintenance schedule will now have to take into consideration the new motor.
60K is a good place to have a motor swap, because that is the one that has the most stuff to change, i.e. the serpentine belt, and the plugs. If you did not get a new belt put on the new engine, then do that, along with all of the regular oil change and air and cabin filters.
No need to worry about the plugs until 120K miles.
Brake fluid change out is every 2 years.
a new ('08) Cayman S and changed the oil at 750 miles -- I always do an early oil/filter service on a new car -- and was not surprised when I removed the oil filter and poured the oil out into a clean oil pan the amount of metal (mostly alum.) in the oil. The oil had a sheen like metalflake paint. I dipped a gloved couple of fingers into the oil and found no large particles.
But still I've very glad to have removed all that particulate matter along with what was probably a very nearly clogged filter and replaced the dirty oil with fresh and the old filter with a new one.
So glad I repeated the process at 1350 miles (600 miles later). Wanted to see if the metal particles in the oil was just a one time thing. Usually it is cause new engines shed lots of metal. It was. Just a tiny tiny hint of some very fine metal particles (alum. again) in the oil.
Engine break in done at 2000 miles and when it gets there engine oil/filter will get changed again, then at 5000 miles and every 5000 miles after. I followed a similar oil change regime with my '02 Boxster and it now has over 217K miles on its original engine.
I plan on getting that much and more out of my Cayman S.
BTW, I have pics of the oil I poured out of the filter housing. If you want I can post here.
Do yourself and your new engine a big favor and change the oil/filter at least once during break-in and twice might not be a bad idea.
Oh, the other thing I've done wiht Cayman S engine is to run Swepco oil treatment, 502 I think. I had some of this analyzed the other day and it contains molybdenum (220 ppm) which is an anti friction/anti wear additive.
Sincerely,
Macster.
OK!
I meant to write a bit about that, but it escaped my mind later...
If you look closely at my first engine picture (taken from behind the rear tire on driver's side), you can see my engine's stamped serial number - M96/03AT66568233.
Then , read up on the information found on the following threads (good stuff):
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...eck-for-2.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...to-them-2.html
From my serial number, you can then see that my engine has the AT symbol; which stands for 'exchange engine' (or something to that effect, in German). In addition, you can see that it was built in 2005 (or later) and that it was engine number 68233 of that series.
It seemed odd to me that this engine would be laying around for this long and I was curious about the 2005 build-date and found out (unofficially) that it likely refers to the 'design date' of the engine rather than when it was actually built. This means that it has all the revisions and technical updates that were made to the engines, up to 2005. I don't believe that there were any more significant updates since then.
Oh, yeah (I specifically asked) it does have the new type of IMS & Bearing. I didn't want to have to worry about that nonsense again...
Also, if you're into counting/figuring. My engine is number 68233, and Mr. Holyoak's (on the posted message) engine is engine number 65160. This means that they've gone through 3,073 engines since they installed his on his car in April 2005.
This roughs out to about 64 engines per month that are designated with the AT markings.
This doesn't necessarily mean that 64 engines blow every month....but it's something to chew on...
Regards,
Pete
not unless he somehow got 65,000 miles over the weekend...
I don't know him, but from the postings I gather that his engine probably looks like this one...
Interesting, I checked my engine number and it is M96/01AT66X 65328
My car is a 1999, Tiptonic with just over 120,000 miles now. So far so good.
Now does the last 5 numbers mean mine was replaced after Mr. Holyoak's in 2005???? I just purchased the car two years ago.
Interesting.
I don't think so...
Your engine seems (to me) to be of an entirely different series...
First, it's a M96/01, which my guess would be of either a different Genreation or Displacement (I think 3.4l),
Then, the 66X means that it was built to 1999 specs...the rest of the numbers would be the series of that type of engines...
Just my opinions...maybe someone out there knows for sure.
Pete
