OTOH, the 17" should have lower unsprung weight, as you're basically replacing an inch of metal with rubber.

Suggestion

Personally I'd like to see a 245 front tire on a set of wheels that I'm running specifically for the track so if the 17' front wheels are 8 - 8.5' then they would fit the mold.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It seems 17" wheels/tires are a lot cheaper then 18's. If I have 235's in the fronts and 285's in the back on 18's or 17's isn't the contact patch the same. What am I giving up in performance and why? Thanks. Ken

POST 2Original post

Two words...sidewall stiffness. With a smaller rim, the sidewall is taller. A taller sidewall has more flex and thus slower reaction that a shorter sidewall.

POST 3Original post

OTOH, the 17" should have lower unsprung weight, as you're basically replacing an inch of metal with rubber. Edited to add: I'm starting to consider 17" for lower cost and weight on the track, and 18" for the street because I like the way it looks.

POST 4Original post

While sever tire tests that I've read have stated that the 18's will be faster it's only by the slightes of margin. For DE's and even AutoX that margin is hardly noticeable and the cheaper the better if you ask me as long as you're not sacrificing tire width AND the wheels will fit over your brakes. What are the sizes of the stock 17' wheels? Personally I'd like to see a 245 front tire on a set of wheels that I'm running specifically for the track so if the 17' front wheels are 8 - 8.5' then they would fit the mold.

POST 5Original post

correct on the weight aspect of things... especially when your comparing a 17" 255 width tire to an 18" 285 width tire.... in that case the 18" tire is heavier as well by up to 3-4 lbs.... the stock 17" rim weighs about 19 lbs in the front and 22 lbs in the rear... the only rims I know that match or come close to these weights are the BBS RG-T which are 20lbs in front and 22 lbs in rear (for 18 inch) and even lighter than the 17" porsche rims are the Champion RG5 rims... 18 lbs in front and 18.8 lbs in rear... this would be a great track and everyday rim combined into one...
