Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause

I had an intermittent CEL and it turned out to be the MAF sensor, even though it was coding O2 sensors.

Be careful, if you go to the wrong tech, you may end up replacing all of the O2 sensors (like I did) and THEN having to replace the MAF sensor too.

There are bunch of things that can set off the CEL and then turn it off again after so many cycles.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Started the car couple days ago and noticed the CEL was on, car ran fine and detected no issue driving it. Told self to get the codes read before the weekend, started car this morning and now no CEL??? Is this common? Does it signify anything? still will get the codes read but was just wondering. The car is a 986, thought I would post here since the boxster forum is dead.

POST 2Original post

Its probably an 02 sensor or MAF sensor....The car sensed something not right, then turned the CEL on...on startup it did another check and at the time, there was no issue so it turned the light off....it'll be back on....I had a problem with the light coming on over and over again, I think it was an 02 sensor, and an exhaust leak...

POST 3Original post

could be a small evap leak, mine has done this in the past.

POST 4Original post

I had an intermittent CEL and it turned out to be the MAF sensor, even though it was coding O2 sensors. Be careful, if you go to the wrong tech, you may end up replacing all of the O2 sensors (like I did) and THEN having to replace the MAF sensor too. Ugly.

POST 5Original post

Yup. ..thats what happened to me....but I was under warranty so it didnt cost me....luckily....

POST 6Original post

Topping off the tank will cause it, as will a batch of bad gas...........sometimes it is simple things....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all, kinda leaning towards bad gas! filled up at a random place few days before it came on. Still will have them read though.

POST 8Original post

I believe that a certain number of start up's(50?)without a fault will turn off the light. Read the code and you eill still see the fault.

POST 9Original post

There are bunch of things that can set off the CEL and then turn it off again after so many cycles. It would be interesting to hook an OBD2 reader up and see the history data to see what it was.
