Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For use of the steering wheel switches, can one downshift via the switches only if the shifter is put in manual (so a 2 step process if one wants to do a quick downshift via the stick/switch) or will switch use override A stick setting?

Do newer Tips permit up/down shifting from the floor stick like mine (+ or -) or must one use the steering wheel switches after putting stick in M position?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Considering trading up my 964 to a 996. Do newer Tips permit up/down shifting from the floor stick like mine (+ or -) or must one use the steering wheel switches after putting stick in M position? For use of the steering wheel switches, can one downshift via the switches only if the shifter is put in manual (so a 2 step process if one wants to do a quick downshift via the stick/switch) or will switch use override A stick setting?

POST 2Original post

1. no floor stick. 2. override "A" for 5 seconds

POST 3Original post

8 seconds.....not 5. Means that in the D mode a manual shift with the buttons will hold for AT LEAST* 8 seconds before the computer takes back over......*under certain circumstances the computer will delay engaging............like down shifting into a turn or with the breaks applied..... The Tip S is a VERRRRRRRY slick little unit.

POST 4Original post

There are some additional functions the modern tiptronic takes care of, for example, if you charge onto an on-ramp with the shifter in D and the car is in third gear, the trans will hold third even if you lift off the throttle. Also, if you brake hard, the trans will downshift for you. The car has accelerometers reading the fore/aft and side-to-side G-forces and if they're "sporting G-forces" the trans will act in a sporting way. Also, if you accelerate hard with the trans in D, then lift off the throttle sharply, the trans will hold the gear instead of upshifting like an ordinary automatic (if you ease off the throttle it will upshift like an ordinary automatic). In fact, in most cases, the modern tiptronic will perform best when simply left in D. I've read that with the new 911 Turbo with Tiptronic lap times are fastest even for experienced track drivers when the trans is simply left in D. It's hard for most of us (all of us except for maybe Schumacher or Alonso) to beat a modern computer chip and software.

POST 5Original post

I agre that the Tip started on the Boxsters and 996s are far better than previous versions. My Boxster was a Tip and so is my 996. I used to autox in M, but I have found that by leaving it in D and down shifting to 1 at the start is the best result. The Tip does take a little time to get used to driving in a performance environment; however, once you get the hang of it it is really good.

POST 6Original post

another good thing is. when you going down hill, computer down shift to 3 to get some engine break. very slick.
