i run a 8500 X50, seems to do the job, but i have no prior experiance, so can't compare it...

Both evaluated the new K40 as basically "as equal to any premium radar dectector we have tested" (quote from speedzones).

Since I'm not pulling the trigger on this purchase for a couple of weeks (waiting for the wife to go out of town), please try to shoot holes in this reasoning and set me straight.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Passport 8500. I really wanted the SRX, but I had such a terrible install expereince on my last car, that I resisted. LIke 1999Porsxche said, I have heard the Bel is the best. However, BEL and Escort are the same company, and so are the Bel RX65 and Passport 8500. So, it seems a little odd, the rating.

V1, by far my favorite to use. When I have used others without the arrows I get nervous - less info to make decisions with. I hardwired both my cars and just swap it from one to the other.
I ran the cable down the A-pilar and back to the center console to use that extra harness, maybe for heated seats I think it said. I followed someone's post on here or Renntech. Thought I bookmarked it, but can't find it at the moment. Yeah, the dangling wire and plug coming out of the socket got old fast.
V1. Actually took k-40 out of the car to put the V1 in when I got it. Have them in all of our cars and wouldn't drive without it. Don't know about others' experiences, but software updates every 3/4 years, despite whether or not hte site rec's them, have made a huge difference to performance every time. I'v hardwired in my cab, very similar to the picture posted earlier in the thread, and connected to a piggy-back on a switched fuse in the panel. Very easy install.
I purchased my car used and the K-40 came with it. I've been very happy with it since I never have to remove it out of the window as I do with my Passport 8500; nor do I have to worry about patrolmen seeing the detector while in DC or VA(especially DCA, where I've been caught twice with a detector).

Solo S2 I like the portability so I can switch between my 996, my M3 or even the wife's CLK500. Much easier than hardwiring all the vehicles or fogetting the power cord or something in the other vehicle which I'd done before with other models.
The only states where detectors are illegal are WA and VA.
My avatar pic was taken when I was pulled over for talking on my cell phone, $100 fine.
I have been pulled over one time for speeding, but it wasn't the detector's fault. The thing was going off like crazy, but with the top down on a bright summer day and the radio blasting, I didn't see or hear it... it was a lesson learned.
Washington DC Porsche, thanks for the great link. It seems that the only category that the V1 takes hands down is Laser Detection. How prevalent is the X50 and Rx65 seem fairly comparble with a slight edge to the Escort. The K40 Calibre(bluetooth) seems really nice, but would like some more feedback.
I am planning to buy a K40 Calibre very soon for these reasons:
1. Concealment From Bad Guys: I don't want my window broken or cab top sliced open to remove a V1 or Escort. I have read that many detectors cause such vandalism (cost of stolen detector is second to cost of damage). Also, I sometimes leave my top open if in a good area and am staying a short time (or can keep watch on the car). I remove all valuables from the inside when I do so. I just don't want another thing to worry about.
2. Concealment From Good Guys: I believe that police, being human, would be more inclined to ticket (rather than warn) if they can clearly see a detector on the windshield.
3. Looks: I don't want to obscure any part of my view of the road. I don't want to have a chunk of metal aiming at my forehead from the windshield. I don't want to have to worry about a flying detector when throwing the car around.
4. Effectiveness: Of course, none of the above means anything if the K40 doesn't work. I have found two tests of this new unit: speedzones.com and the-gadgeteer.com. Both evaluated the new K40 as basically "as equal to any premium radar dectector we have tested" (quote from speedzones).
Note that radarbusters.com sells detectors and tends to evaluate those they carry as better than those they don't.
5. Finally: I don't get the arrows. If I detect a non-X band signal, I will check my mirror and quickly slow down. Time is of the essence; react before evaluating flashing arrows.
As far as I can tell, the K40 (granted, with a very high price) is the only unit that meets these criteria. Since I'm not pulling the trigger on this purchase for a couple of weeks (waiting for the wife to go out of town), please try to shoot holes in this reasoning and set me straight.
Thanks for the heads-up. A quick look at the Escort site seems to indicate the same features and level of price/performance as K40 claims.
Where do you locate the readout module? Did you have to have it installed by a new car dealer (as the Escort site claims)?
Check out the link to the pictures I posted on the first page. I had it done at an independent installer.
The detector is under the middle grill, two laser diffusers on each side in the front grill, and the rear reflector right over the rear license plate.
Refering to #5, with any detector when people hear it beep they slow down. The K40 indicates which direction, front or rear, the signal is coming from. So if I'm local and am near areas of normal falses I may or may not look to see if it's coming from the rear before slowing; but if I'm off the beaten path and beeps, I slow down and so do my friends who have the arrows..
The old Bel, Escort, and V1 have tied in dectection performance since '99 or '00. The x50 is just the newest model of the 8500. Arrows and Laser Dectection are not that important to me especially since once you're hit with laser V1 or not, you are already caught. The most important to me is detection and how many signals are out there(which the K-40 doesn't show but the Escort and V1 do).
There are working legal Laser/Lidar jammers on the market can be had which I find valuable. There is, as of late a new active radar jammer that will jam x, k and ka as well but it's 100% illegal and costs $1500.
Riad - I love the fact that you're endorsing radar detectors while your avatar shows you getting pulled over. Sorry you got nailed. As I know, these things can't guarantee you won't get caught - you just don't get caught as often...
I have a Solo S2 and had a K40 with front/rear detectors and a front diffuser on an '03 Maser I traded for my new 997S. Performance for both was nearly identical in terms of distance for detection and response time. For contrast I also compared both to a Sonsoro Bullet detector. The Bullet is dangerously insensitive compared to the others. Warnings are much closer to the source.
The convenience and portability of the Solo is excellent...I even use it on my motorcycle with a remote, wireless LED heads up warning signal in my helmet. I've recommended the Solo to several co-workers & friends who bought it & have been happy with it, reporting several tix they've avoided. I think the Solo is best bang for bucks and convenience.
However, for my new 997S I am going with the K40 Calibre system. I want an excellent detector, some laser protection and no portable unit that can be taken from my car or seen by a LEO or thief. The dual LED's indicating front or rear source are useful too, and the new voice indicator takes the guesswork out of deciphering the beeping and visual flashing pattern to identify the source's band.
I just got 3 quotes for this setup, installed: $1300, $1800 (after negotiating it down $200), and $1700 from my previous installer, so shop around. I won't be going with the $1300 install (it's a small, local high volume mid-fi chain with suspect installers). Most likely will go with the $1800 quote given their focus on high end vehicles and custom work. After relaying the other quotes they came down $200 from their initial price.

Thanks for the info.
On a practical basis, does it matter in the sens that if they detedted you detector you're still fried...assuming dedectors are illegal OR would it be usefull in the sens that it allows you to turn it off ???
...this is a lot of detecting...my head is spinning....
VG-2 tells police you have a detector. VG-2 Protection "hides" your unit from the police. Some units warn you that you are under surveillance by VG-2, at which point you should shut it off & hide it if it is not a stealth installation.
DC = typically uses photo radar vehicles
MD = MSP is doing alot of laser/lidar
VA = KA and K constantly on
NC = sneakiest of them all, they may be using it, they are known for "Instant on" on I85.
Most people don't check their mirrors or scan the road therefore ended up passing a patrolman or the patrolman cruises up behind them.
What I don't understand is most folks on this forum don't race nor speed on public hwys but there are sure alot of radar detectors in this post..
We don't have to worry about that in the US even in DC and VA.. But if I were in Canada, I would just turn off my radar detector once I detect radar or radar detector detection devices. Like I said before

answers all these questions.
Any of you guys interested in posting their installs so I can get a good idea of how to do it myself? I am going to buy a V1 in the next week or so and want the install to look sleek?
Functionally, can you install it at the leftmost edge of the windshiel or does it have to be near the rearview mirror? Also, does the tint hue on the windshield impact laser too much? Do you guys mount it closer to the dash?
Thanks.
This is the only problem I have with the V1, it's fuggin ugly and huge, looks like you have a toaster oven on your dashboard. They have an install where they replace your rear view mirror, but the mirror looked very large.
I still want a company like V1 to introduce a heads up display version, now that would be worth it!
Mine is above the mirror on the passenger side. Hard wired into the harness behind the upper console... took about 20 minutes... No need to worry about the laser with the tint.... It's really only a warning that you need to slow down your getting a ticket... Unless you have a jammer that actually works...
Have any of you with a V1 been saved by instant-on? I think most radar detectors are more than adequate for either K band or X bank in continuous-on mode, but I'm not sure properly used instant-on can be detected quickly enough by any radar detector to save you. I thought your only hope was to detect the radar when someone in front of you got zapped.
i guess you could...i keep mine high and just off drivers side of the rearview. ran the wire across the windshield trim and dropped it in the overhead console trim. i find it very unintrusive and you can tuck the wire in to the console if you remove the unit. wire tucks in nicely, plug head slides in tight against console and can't be seen at all from outside the vehicle.
will try to post some pics this weekend
The only certain way to be saved from instant-on is if it's targeting other cars. However, I "heard" that cops need three confirmed readings before you get a ticket. So, in theory, if you see the cop before they see you, you can threshold brake down to the speed limit before they can get the required three readings.
With instant on, you can rapidly slam on brakes, this way he more than likely wont be able to get a lock on you traveling at a constant speed. That's the beauty of POP technology.
The Passport 8500 was too long for where I want to position it, under the visor and was too heavy compared to V1, and its rear facing sensor was on top which will be obstructed if I hang it. V1's rear facing sensor was right on it's display face which directly faces the rear window. Just my comparison.
The slickest installation I have seen so far (CGT) was done by etching the mirror glass and putting the V1 display inside the mirror. Sensors are installed front and rear near the bumpers. $2400 in NYC. Total integration and ultra low profile. I'm saving my aluminum cans for when my 997S Cab arrives in the USA.
