Sounds like each dealer varies a little bit...my 01 CPO'ed Cab had the coolant tank replaced under warrantee, no questions asked with zero cost....

Suggestion
I had a 1980 928 and went through the same bogus out of warranty (only 2 years back then) $500 repair of a leaking coolant overflow tank, so Porsche's been working on this one for DECADES!

Suggestion
I was informed by the service manager that someone from Porsche might be needed to ok a new engine, or the engine might need major work to replace a $0.59 O-ring.

Suggestion
I suppose if they are willing to replace the engine I am the better for it, but I do find it disconcerting that the CPO investigation turned up nothing.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I purcahsed this 2000 C2 only 3 months ago and it was certified by the dealership. I also have a 2 year extended warranty.
My car had a huge puddle of coolant underneath it. I took it in to the dealer and they are telling me that there is a crack in the coolant case and it will cost $800 to fix. I understand this is a used car, but it seems ridiculous to me that there is suddenly a crack. Anyone have any recommendations for me? Do I have any recourse?
ahhh CPO & Extended warranty doesn't that mean they will fix it? Do a search it is a common problem I think I read recently that Porsche is on the 6th version of the coolant tank.
U have a CPO car and so the warranty should take care of it. Now it its a 3rd party extended warranty like 1stsourceautowarranty (may they rest in hell for what they've done with folks $$) then you may have to bear the cost out of pocket. Get the dealer to fix it under CPO. Otherwise its about a $350-400 repair for the new modified tank and to bleed the system from any independant shop. Mine was done on my 99 996 C2 last June. No problems since. Good luck!
My dealer is telling me that the warranty doesn't cover this; it merely covers the engine/drivetrain. Unfortunately, I don't know if my warranty is through Porsche or the dealership.
Yes, spoke to Porsche. They did confirm that the coolant case is not covered.
My problem is that this car is a 2000, was CERTIFIED, and I only owned it for 3 months. How does it suddenly crack? To me, it sounds like it was already cracked and it finally gave in and started leaking. Porsche's stance is that there is no way to tell when the crack occurred.
I am hoping that the General Manager will have mercy and fix it for free; after all, I am a repeat customer to this dealership.
Sounds like each dealer varies a little bit...my 01 CPO'ed Cab had the coolant tank replaced under warrantee, no questions asked with zero cost....
In fact I purchased it from a dealer in Penn. and had it shipped to MA...and the dealer that did the fix under warrantee is in NH!!! Maybe there are various level of CPO??
Interesting! I have a similar situation, with a new to me CPO 2002 C4 Cab. However the diagnosis is somewhat different.
From 996 needs new engine .... thread
Read through this thread last week; a week after, I picked up my new to me CPO 2002 996 C4(28,000mi). I had the car inspected(PPI, without compression tests), for major flaws by my mechanic. Only issue was a slight oil leak from a sensor by the right rear cylinder(not RMS), which the dealer agreed to take care of.
After having the car for all of 2 weeks. I scheduled to have the oil leak repaired. After, I dropped off the car my wife (good for something!?) informed me that she noticed green fluid on my driveway(30 degree pitch) where the C4 had been. Checked the garage(flat) where normally parked nothing! I called the dealer and asked to have it inverstigated. Guess what, antifreeze coming out the left exhaust pipe. No smoke, no coolant light, no misfiring, car is running just fine. I was informed by the service manager that someone from Porsche might be needed to ok a new engine, or the engine might need major work to replace a $0.59 O-ring. At any rate, they have the car as it is not drivable until Porsche decides how to handle it. Needless to say I am not pleased. I suppose if they are willing to replace the engine I am the better for it, but I do find it disconcerting that the CPO investigation turned up nothing. Don't really know what my best course of action is at this point. Based upon my experience and what has been written on this thread a piece of me wants my money back, and just be done with it(fat chance).
Is the replacement engine even if at no cost to me(CPO), an adequate reolution? What other recourse is there?
Where was your coolant leaking from?
so the same cpo car, some coverd, some not.
did anyone say this is a beauty contest?
put kidding aside, u did a good job.
maybe you need to read more on the coolant case, it's a common problem, and there's a redesigned one, make sure the dealer install the new one.
Yes, I will make sure they put a redesigned coolant case in.
Spoke to a buddy who is a mechanic (for BMW), and he said that this type of thing is common.
Yes, it's common. Happened to my 2001 C4. The wife comes in from the garage and while walking passed me says "your $90,000 car is leaking fluid all over our garage." That was cold.
i talked to a prosche tech last week, when he's PPIing my car, he said it's common.
can u give me the part number once it's done? i would like to keep it as a referense.
I am surprised that the coolant tank is not covered. My dealer did it for me, and they even charged it to warranty. I have the invoice from the dealer.
I had to replace the coolant tank on my CPO car. Not covered. Not good-willed by the dealer either.
I replaced mine DIY. About 3 hr job. $275 or so in parts and coolant.
BTW, both the coolant tank and the washer fluid reservoir on my 98 Boxster cracked.
This is a common problem.
me tooo
(surprise huh) if it takes porsche 6 attempts to create a damn plastic container that won't break, makes me wonder about the rest of the more elaborate parts in the car...
Bob, Porsche doesn't really make/manufacture anything. Like most automakers, they are largely an assembly shop. That plastic container was probably made in China.
lvdell,
well if you do insist.. charging $400 for a plastic container seems ridiculously overpriced if made in germany... now if it's made in china, then it's even more ridiculous!! well you did ask for it
I bought my CPO '99 Cab at Hennessy,
buy small parts at Ellis, expensive parts online,
do regular maintenance and all mods myself,
use Hennessy for maintenance I can't DIY.
That plastic container was probably made in China
It's hard enough rationaliizing the price that Porsche charges when I thought they used German parts. It's going to be really tough if Porsche gets their parts from the same parts bin as Hyundai.
I had a 1980 928 and went through the same bogus out of warranty (only 2 years back then) $500 repair of a leaking coolant overflow tank, so Porsche's been working on this one for DECADES!
I've always been skeptical of these pressurized plastic tanks. Many other manufacturers don't pressurize this portion of the cooling system.
You can get them at Renntech.
FWIW, the part # for the tank I installed last May is
996-106-147-56, and I paid $237.11 for it from a local dealer. You can probably get it for less at Sunset.
