Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

turned on the headlight switch. City lights come on, no ignition. After about 5 seconds, they pop on. Odd. Is this the bulb going? Ballast? I have the original bulbs since '03. What is their approximate lifespan (obviously based on the strikes the bulb makes). Figure 5x/week for 6 years.

POST 2Original post

I've had 4 cars with HID lights now, and they don't seem to have a consistent life. Both Porsches still have their original bulbs, and are still going strong. My Saab 9-5 had the bulbs go out after only about 3 years. Before they went out, they tended to dim a little, and to turn more of a purple hue. They would also flicker occasionally. The issue you are describing sounds a little different...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought it was a connection issue but with both lamps doing this in sync, I'm wondering what it is. Maybe a fluke.

POST 5Original post

My guess would be headlight switch too. Mine was behaving similarly before the dealer replaced the switch under CPO.

POST 6Original post

Had the same problem a couple of months ago...Replaced the headlight switch and everything is ok! Quite straight forward DIY. Nikos.

POST 7Original post

It sounds like the igniter on you headlights may be failing. This happened to the lights on my 996 and if it is the same problem I experienced the length of time they take to light up will get progressively worse. Dealer repaired my car under warranty.
