Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

got the 996 to AKERS porsche this afternoon for the flywheel(clutch chatter)IMS/RMS upgrades and spent a couple of hours hanging around annoying everyone. it turns out the clutch chatter was due to a failing DM flywheel. i'm going to install a new clutch too. for anyone who is new to 996 ownership or any seattle 996 owner who wants to do the IMS upgrade, i thought i'd get some photos if you are unfamiliar as i am with the procedure. akers uses the LN engineering bearing and one of the differences i noticed right away is the newer designed bearing has no rubber seal which i assume allows oil to flow more readily to the bearings. i took photos after the transmission was removed. *the new bearing is currently sitting in akers refrigerator overnight to shrink it slightly for the install tomorrow. here are some photos of the removal process and the old/new bears compared. i'll add more photos in the next post(any way to add more than 5 pics?)

POST 2Original post

Thanks for the pics, your Porsche looks happy in that shop. Looks like you'll be driving your new Porsche very soon. Why the failure in your DM flywheel so soon after only 10k miles, any ideas?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

no ideas on the flywheel yet

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thought you'd love it!! ....hey its good to see you back on the horse bitching again!

POST 6Original post

Not on a high horse at all and certainly not bitching. These pics and info would have fit in very well in most of the thousands of other threads that already exist on this subject. At the very least, one new post would have been sufficient. Anyway, best of luck with the car.

POST 7Original post

Just wondering, what was the condition of the old IMS bearing ?

POST 8Original post

Hey, that's the same lift Mark and co. did the PPI on my car! Despite what the poster above said, thanks for posting. Even after more than 10 years on this board, I still enjoy hearing about an individual's experience with their Porsche. If you can, post more pics. Inquiring minds would like to know the condition of the old components. Cheers, Tom

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thats denny aker inspecting the clutch. doug is the akers mechanic doing the work on my car. here are some photos from this morning's IMS install and RMS removal and install. IMS was stored in AKERS refrigerator overnight to shrink it before install.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the condition of the old IMS bearing looked good. the condition of the RMS was also good and area surrounding it dry. doug the mechanic also cut open the oil filter to inspect it and it was free of any metal or debris. the drained oil looked like new. looking back on the service records there was only 500 miles on the drained oil. he also checked the coolant for me to make sure there weren't any signs of oil in the coolant - as i previously posted there was a PPI done on the car last month and i spoke to the shop prior to my purchase and they went over the report w/me on the phone which was really good of them but i don't have the paper copy of the PPI report. since i was having the flywheel/clutch done it seemed cost effective to do the IMS and RMS too. as i've mentioned in previous posts i feel more comfortable driving the car with the LN engineering ceramic bearing upgrade. the flywheel seems a mystery. it is a LUK dual mass flywheel and for some reason the bearings failed. it makes noise when turned. car should be done this afternoon.

POST 13Original post

the orange around the IMS plate bolts, is that RTV silicone? is that something that one is supposed to put there? is it in any instructions? I'm asking because after my IMS there is quite a significant oil leak in this area and I don't remember the mechanic using any silicone sealant...

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

heres a photo of the product...not sure exactly what sort of sealant it is but i believe doug the mechanic who did the work said he always seals them like this. if i'm not mistaken i thought he said it mentions this in the instructions but not 100% sure...i can find out.

POST 15Original post

Hey, I didn't know Akers was doing LN bearings. Thanks for the thread. I always love to see the 356's in there when I take my car in.

POST 16Original post

That's loctite 574 from the looks of it. It's not an RTV silicon. You don't want to use any RTV silicon on there. Curil T would do about the same job and I've seen our local Porsche dealership use sealant on the ribbed o-rings as well. If you have a case that has a scratch or porosity where the o-ring is supposed to seal, it will leak. Had one shop call today with this problem, but it's far and few between. I'm sure it's something only dealerships do after having done so many flange reseals under warranty over the years.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 9068215

Thanks. Grrr ... as I feared they have probably forgotten it and need to go back in. will research loctite 574.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

picked my car up this morning. what a difference!...have to give many thanks to doug the mechanic who worked on it. he's very particular, careful and thorough. he checked the condition of the oil & oil filter for any metal particulants or coolant and also checked the coolant for any oil...everything looks good and i always feel comfortable having akers do work on my cars. nothing like a great reliable honest shop.

POST 19Original post

That's great! Nice looking car now run the wheels off it. You should be set for a while.

POST 20Original post

Is Akers the best place in the seattle region to do the ims upgrade? I go to Cantrell's and was thinking to replace it with the clutch when that eventually goes out.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

AKERS in my opinion is the best shop around. they have 45 years of history repairing these car, up on all of the latest issues in regards to upgrades/service and preventative maintenance. ....you cannot go wrong. visit the shop and see for yourself.

POST 28Original post

Holy resurrected thread Batman! Although I will give Akers another thumbs up!

POST 29Original post

Would you mind sharing what the approx cost was for the IMS and RMS work? I'm in the Seattle area and in the market for a 996. I'm just getting up to speed on the details of these cars and want to make sure I budget to get this work done when I buy the car.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

send me a private message w/your ph# and i'll give you all the details. - i noticed you are a new user so not sure if you can PM? - if not let me know

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10222263

never changed my mind about the 996 - always really appreciated it - just wanted a lower mileage example - mine was at 115K miles and i wanted something in the 70-80K range - i also really wanted to switch over to seal grey which i love - almost every porsche i've owned has been silver but my grey 82 sc which i sold a few months ago was a beautiful dark grey. i'm shopping for a 996 as we speak. debated a turbo for the bullet proof engine and looks but with 2 kids off to college soon i have to stick in the $20K range so i don't get too paranoid about being selfish as my wife would put it. turbo will come in about 8 years if i'm still breathing. i just get bored with any porsche other than my 356 - since my 356 is stored in our florida condo i only get to drive it a couple of times a year so i am in pain right now being porscheless. the 996 i am looking at now has the guardian installed which i personally feel is a band aid - i feel strongly about the updated IMS bearing so i will most likely be back to Akers for the retrofit if i purchase the car in my crosshairs.

POST 32Original post

Yes, new user. I believe I need to post a few more times before I can pm. I'll send you pm once I earn that privilege. Any other thoughts on buying a 996 are appreciated. I'm looking for an 02-04 C2 coupe with manual transmission.
