Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Clean combustion chambers as well as you can' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean combustion chambers as well as you can' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you have the means, you could check how well they seal using a vacuum pump (the ones sold for A/C diy'ing) and a suitable manifold that seals across the inlet and outlet openings on the cilinder head.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, three months ago, I
posted
that I was 20% there.
@yelcab
correctly identified that I was really 10% there - a truth I now understand. Life and work happens so now maybe I'm 30% there. The top is off half of the engine (cylinders 1-3). This was the "good side". Damage was to cylinders 4-6, which I'll get onto next. Pics here of the underside of the cylinder head, intake & exhaust valves. They look pretty crusty, but they were working... How do y'all think they look? Cleanable? Or do people replace these at this point?
And for those who want to see the piston heads:

They look good in the sense they all have the same appearance so mixture and combustion were similar between all 3 cilinders.

If you're going to have the seats refurbished, then the seat area on the valves will be cut and you can skip that check, as the machine shop will do it as a final check.
Exhaust valve guides are the first to wear past the wear limit.
Replace the valve stem seals in all cases.
A tip by Porschetech3 is to chamfer/bevel the edges of the oil channels that feed the lifter bores and variocam solenoid to lower the risk of the typical M96 head cracks starting.
Jake Raby coats the head gasket with Permatex copper gasket spray in the area of the chain well.
'Help me DIY'on YT has 2 or 3 rebuild series on the M96 and M97, of which one is a out building a stroked/bored M96/97 with the full FSI kit. That provides a few of Jake Raby's 'silver bullets'.
Clean the combustion chambers as well as you can. I noticed a crack between plug thread and an exhaust valve seat on my B1 cil head and the machine shop found another 3, albeit very minor ones, after cleaning it in their professional ultrasonic machine.
